Why: the rebase conflict resolution in tests/tools/test_model_tools.py
deleted the unrelated TestBridgeDispatch class (3 tests from 73163e3);
it is restored verbatim from main with TestBrowserRetrievalHints after it.
The fix had five tests for one invariant: the OPENAI_MODEL_EXECUTION_GUIDANCE
check duplicated test_phantom_tool_references, and the two static-schema
"toolset-neutral" checks are now folded into test_silent_without_web_tools,
which runs _apply_dynamic_schemas over the real browser_navigate/browser_cdp
schemas so the rendered descriptions are what is asserted.
execution_guidance_text() no longer takes valid_tool_names: the guidance is
toolset-neutral, so the parameter was ignored; the single caller in
agent/system_prompt.py and its test are updated.
The rebased guidance text no longer names web_search anywhere, so
execution_guidance_text()'s replace() calls (3733e4aff5) matched
nothing and were dead; the function now returns the neutral text for
every toolset and its phantom-tool test asserts "no web tool named"
instead of the removed sentence. model_tools ports the PR's hint layer
into main's _DYNAMIC_SCHEMA_REWRITERS table (browser_navigate +
browser_cdp) rather than a second pass after it.
Tests: the two browser_cdp registry tests were re-added by the PR but
main pruned them in 39975613b13b4; replaced with one schema-neutrality
invariant. Exact-wording assertions ("lightweight retrieval tool",
"appropriate permitted retrieval/search tool") were change detectors and
are dropped. tools-reference.md row updated to the new schema text.
The rename sweep in the base commit missed the sibling-test blast radius
(18 red files on CI). Three classes, all fixed:
1. Stale old names in tests (todo/cronjob/process/tour/tip) — updated to
todo_list/cronjob_manage/process_manage/gui_tour/show_tip at every
registry.get_entry/dispatch/coerce/preview/allowlist call site, plus
the coding-brief sentence in agent/coding_context.py now names
todo_list (and its gating test).
2. Missed rename in production: AGENT_RUNTIME_POST_HOOK_TOOL_NAMES still
held 'tour' — post-hook ownership would have double-emitted for
gui_tour via the bridge path.
3. Tests pinning pre-deferral assembly (blank-slate surface, modal
sandbox resolution, desktop diet, HUD note) now pin their ACTUAL
contract under the legacy defer:[] override, or assert on granted
tool names instead of visible schemas.
Also fixes a pre-existing ordering flake surfaced by the sweep:
test_holds_exactly_the_gui_affordances depended on whether an earlier
test had imported apply_layout_tool (registry-registered, not in the
static desktop_ui list) — now forces discovery and pins the full set.
649 tests green locally across all touched files, both orderings.
Audit finding (Blank Slate): the system prompt advertised web_search,
skill_view, todo, and the hermes-agent skill even when the toolset had
none of them — the model chases phantoms it can't call.
- hermes-agent skill is now essential: cannot be disabled (config reads
strip it, hermes tools writes drop it), cannot be deleted by
skill_manage, is re-seeded past curator suppression, and is seeded
even on .no-bundled-skills profiles (Blank Slate / --no-skills).
- Blank Slate core toolsets grow from file+terminal to
file+terminal+vision+skills: read_file cannot read images and points
at vision_analyze; the essential skill needs skill_view to load.
- HERMES_AGENT_HELP_GUIDANCE degrades to a docs-URL-only variant when
skill tools are absent.
- Execution-discipline guidance drops its web_search lines when web
tools are off (execution_guidance_text renderer).
- Skills-index preamble says 'basic tools like terminal' instead of
naming web_search when web tools are off.
- Coding operating brief drops the todo-tracking sentence when the todo
tool isn't loaded.
All gating keys off agent.valid_tool_names, fixed at session
construction — prompt stays byte-stable per session (cache-safe).
