teknium1 d10bb2ab6f test: make tests/ mirror the source tree; drop issue numbers from filenames
`scripts/run_tests.sh tests/<dir>/` is how a change gets its regression
coverage run, so a test filed under the wrong directory is a test nobody
runs when that code changes. Two kinds of drift had accumulated.

Parallel directories for one source package, folded into the mirror:
  tests/acp        -> tests/acp_adapter   (its __init__/conftest move with it)
  tests/cli        -> tests/hermes_cli    (prompt_toolkit fixture merged into
                                           hermes_cli/conftest.py)
  tests/run_agent  -> tests/agent         (backoff fixture becomes
                                           agent/conftest.py)
  tests/relay      -> tests/gateway/relay
  tests/state      -> tests/hermes_state

246 loose files at tests/ root, routed by the package they import/patch:
hermes_cli, hermes_state, agent, gateway, tools, plugins, tui_gateway, cron.
Installer and desktop-update script tests go to tests/scripts/{install,
desktop_update}/. 43 tests of root-level modules (batch_runner, utils,
hermes_constants, packaging) stay at the root.

Filenames drop their issue numbers (95 files: test_89315_x.py -> test_x.py);
the number stays in the module docstring where it has context.

Collisions: test_cli_skin_integration.py existed in both tests/ and tests/cli
with different subsets — merged into one (10 tests, all kept);
run_agent/test_pre_compress_memory_context.py -> agent/..._handoff.py;
tests/test_account_usage.py -> agent/test_account_usage_fetch.py;
tests/test_web_server.py -> hermes_cli/test_web_server_ws_ping.py.
Deleted: test_minisweagent_path.py (empty since PR #2804),
test_model_picker_scroll.py (tested a private copy of the logic, imported
nothing), test_process_loop_event_loop_warning.py (asserted asyncio behaviour,
imported nothing from Hermes).

Repo-root path arithmetic (Path(__file__).parents[N], dirname chains) is
bumped for the 202 files that changed depth and verified by evaluating every
such expression against the new location. classify_changes' desktop-updater
lane prefix, tests-os.yml's ignore glob and every in-tree path comment follow
the moves. tests/test_tests_tree_layout.py keeps the tree from drifting back.

Teknium 53db597201 simplify(compat): hermes_state — drop 81 re-exports + 3 registry aliases + 3 shims, repoint 45 callers + 60 test files
hermes_state.py: delete every '# noqa: F401 (re-exported...)' import block (hermes_state_common/errors/guard/
readpool/sessions/fts/dbfile/wal/repair/registry + agent.context_compressor _DB_PERSISTED_MARKER_KEY); keep
only the names hermes_state.py itself uses, without noqa.
hermes_state_registry.py: drop get_shared_session_db/release_shared_session_db/close_shared_session_dbs
aliases; every caller (gateway/, tools/, tui_gateway/, cron/, mcp_serve, run_agent, tests) now imports
acquire/release/close_all/release_or_close from hermes_state_registry.
hermes_state_titles.py: drop set_auto_title_if_empty shim (title_generator keeps its getattr fallback).
Re-remove shim-only names restored by 34abf954bd: latest_user_message_row_id (tests call
latest_message_row_id(key, role='user'); role-targeting assertions kept) and get_session_activity (tests
build the snapshot via agent.session_activity.build_activity_snapshot over db.get_session(sid)).
hermes_state_wal._log_once resolves its dedupe sets as module globals instead of via hermes_state;
hermes_state_repair helpers call module globals directly (tests patch hermes_state_repair.<name>).
Frozen updater surface untouched (update_cmd_maint imports only SessionDB from hermes_state).

Teknium a9b0dd6742 simplify(compat): cron scheduler — drop 82 re-exports, repoint 8 callers + 33 test files
cron/scheduler.py no longer re-exports the split modules (scheduler_delivery /
_script / _prompt / _preflight); it imports only the 19 names it calls itself
(bottom-of-file, E402 kept for the import cycle). Dropped the shim-only
`import shutil` and the F401 note on windows_hide_flags (still used by
scheduler.py). Split modules now call same-module helpers directly, reach
sibling split modules via late-bound module refs (_delivery/_script/_preflight)
next to _sched, and import windows_hide_flags themselves; origin-resident names
(load_config, Path, _SCRIPT_TIMEOUT, heartbeat_run_claim, ...) still go through
_sched. Callers/tests import + patch the defining module.

kshitijk4poor db339f0051 fix(state): consolidate gateway SessionDB writers via process-wide shared registry
A gateway process opened state.db from ~12 call sites, each minting its
own writer connection, self._lock, close-time WAL checkpoint, and
token-writer thread. With N independent writers on one WAL file, one
connection's close-time checkpoint could race another's growth — the
lost/reordered-page-write signature across 11+ incidents (#90837).

Adds hermes_state_registry.py: a process-wide, per-path, refcounted
shared registry owning the writer boundary.

- acquire(path): same resolved path returns the same instance (one
  writer connection, one lock, one token-writer thread) for every
  long-lived in-process caller (gateway runner, SessionStore, per-agent
  lazy recall, cron per-job, mirror, channel_directory, slash_commands,
  shutdown_flush, session_search, react_to_message, delegate, mcp_serve,
  auto_archive, tui_gateway).
- close() on a shared instance is a NO-OP — the registry owns the
  lifecycle, so one caller's close can never tear down a writer other
  callers still hold.
- Generation-aware retirement on inode change: a replaced state.db
  RETIRES the live generation (never lent again) but keeps it alive for
  existing holders; release is object-keyed so holders of the old
  generation drain it independently of the new one. The old
  generation's own write path still fails with the typed
  StateDbReplacedError (existing protection, unchanged).
- Replacement-open failure leaves NO registry entry for the path —
  the next acquire retries fresh, never hands out a closed stale object.
- All teardown runs OUTSIDE the registry lock: a final release's WAL
  checkpoint can never stall acquisition for every state.db.
- close_shared_session_dbs() at gateway shutdown drains every
  generation (live + retired) as the final safety net.

CLI one-shots, recovery flows, and read-only cross-profile opens keep
using SessionDB() directly with their own close() — only long-lived
in-process sites route through the registry.

References #90837 (root-cause tracker stays open: the #10 EOF signature
and the WAL-lifecycle A/B verdict remain under investigation there).

Teknium 6b81590c55 test: prune low-value tests suite-wide (wave 1) — 46,820 → 28,106 test functions
Systematic prune per AGENTS.md test policy, one pass over every major
test tree (gateway, hermes_cli, tools, agent, run_agent, plugins, cli,
cron, tui_gateway, honcho/openviking, root-level):

- DELETE: source-reading tests (read_text/getsource on prod files),
  change-detector tests (exact catalog counts, model-name snapshots,
  config version literals), mock-echo tests (assert a mock returns what
  it was told), assertion-free/trivial tests, near-duplicate
  parametrizations (boundaries + one representative kept), async/sync
  twin duplicates, cosmetic within-file variations.
- KEEP (mandatory): security/redaction/approval guards, message-role
  alternation invariants, prompt-caching/deterministic-call-id
  invariants, issue-number regression tests (deduped), E2E tests.
- 6 test files deleted outright (script-style/no-assert or fully
  redundant); conftest.py, fakes/, fixtures/ untouched.
- tests/acp/conftest.py added: autouse fixture stubs the live
  models.dev/GitHub/Copilot/Anthropic inventory fetches that ACP server
  tests performed on every session create — test_server.py 147s → 3.4s,
  and the tests are now genuinely hermetic.
- Sleep-based slowness shrunk where safe (codex_ttfb_watchdog,
  compression_concurrent_fork, etc.); no wall-clock assertion tightened.

Verification: full hermetic suite via scripts/run_tests.sh —
2439 files, 31,130 tests passed, 0 failed, 0 flaky retries, 315s wall
(baseline: 583s wall, 13,564s subprocess CPU).

kshitijk4poor 66827f8947 chore: prune unused imports and duplicate import redefinitions
Remove unused imports (F401) and duplicate/shadowed import
redefinitions (F811) across the codebase using ruff's safe
autofixes. No behavioral changes -- imports only.

- ~1400 safe autofixes applied across 644 files (net -1072 lines)
- __init__.py re-exports preserved (excluded from F401 removal so
  public re-export surfaces stay intact)
- Re-exports that are imported or monkeypatched by tests but look
  unused in their defining module are kept with explicit # noqa:
  F401 (gateway/run.py load_dotenv; run_agent re-exports from
  agent.message_sanitization, agent.context_compressor,
  agent.retry_utils, agent.prompt_builder, agent.process_bootstrap,
  agent.codex_responses_adapter)
- Unsafe F841 (unused-variable) fixes deliberately skipped -- those
  can change behavior when the RHS has side effects
- ruff lints remain disabled in pyproject.toml (only PLW1514 is
  selected); this is a one-time cleanup, not a config change

Verification:
- python -m compileall: clean
- pytest --collect-only: all 27161 tests collect (zero import errors)
- core entry points import clean (run_agent, model_tools, cli,
  toolsets, hermes_state, batch_runner, gateway)
- static scan: every name any test imports directly from an edited
  module still resolves

Teknium 3207b9bda0 test: speed up slow tests (backoff + subprocess + IMDS network) (#11797)
Cuts shard-3 local runtime in half by neutralizing real wall-clock
waits across three classes of slow test:

## 1. Retry backoff mocks

- tests/run_agent/conftest.py (NEW): autouse fixture mocks
  jittered_backoff to 0.0 so the `while time.time() < sleep_end`
  busy-loop exits immediately. No global time.sleep mock (would
  break threading tests).
- test_anthropic_error_handling, test_413_compression,
  test_run_agent_codex_responses, test_fallback_model: per-file
  fixtures mock time.sleep / asyncio.sleep for retry / compression
  paths.
- test_retaindb_plugin: cap the retaindb module's bound time.sleep
  to 0.05s via a per-test shim (background writer-thread retries
  sleep 2s after errors; tests don't care about exact duration).
  Plus replace arbitrary time.sleep(N) waits with short polling
  loops bounded by deadline.

## 2. Subprocess sleeps in production code

- test_update_gateway_restart: mock time.sleep. Production code
  does time.sleep(3) after `systemctl restart` to verify the
  service survived. Tests mock subprocess.run \u2014 nothing actually
  restarts \u2014 so the wait is dead time.

## 3. Network / IMDS timeouts (biggest single win)

- tests/conftest.py: add AWS_EC2_METADATA_DISABLED=true plus
  AWS_METADATA_SERVICE_TIMEOUT=1 and ATTEMPTS=1. boto3 falls back
  to IMDS (169.254.169.254) when no AWS creds are set. Any test
  hitting has_aws_credentials() / resolve_aws_auth_env_var() (e.g.
  test_status, test_setup_copilot_acp, anything that touches
  provider auto-detect) burned ~2-4s waiting for that to time out.
- test_exit_cleanup_interrupt: explicitly mock
  resolve_runtime_provider which was doing real network auto-detect
  (~4s). Tests don't care about provider resolution \u2014 the agent
  is already mocked.
- test_timezone: collapse the 3-test "TZ env in subprocess" suite
  into 2 tests by checking both injection AND no-leak in the same
  subprocess spawn (was 3 \u00d7 3.2s, now 2 \u00d7 4s).

## Validation

| Test | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| test_anthropic_error_handling (8 tests) | ~80s | ~15s |
| test_413_compression (14 tests) | ~18s | 2.3s |
| test_retaindb_plugin (67 tests) | ~13s | 1.3s |
| test_status_includes_tavily_key | 4.0s | 0.05s |
| test_setup_copilot_acp_skips_same_provider_pool_step | 8.0s | 0.26s |
| test_update_gateway_restart (5 tests) | ~18s total | ~0.35s total |
| test_exit_cleanup_interrupt (2 tests) | 8s | 1.5s |
| **Matrix shard 3 local** | **108s** | **50s** |

No behavioral contract changed \u2014 tests still verify retry happens,
service restart logic runs, etc.; they just don't burn real seconds
waiting for it.

Supersedes PR #11779 (those changes are included here).

Siddharth Balyan f3006ebef9 refactor(tests): re-architect tests + fix CI failures (#5946)
* refactor: re-architect tests to mirror the codebase

* Update tests.yml

* fix: add missing tool_error imports after registry refactor

* fix(tests): replace patch.dict with monkeypatch to prevent env var leaks under xdist

patch.dict(os.environ) can leak TERMINAL_ENV across xdist workers,
causing test_code_execution tests to hit the Modal remote path.

* fix(tests): fix update_check and telegram xdist failures

- test_update_check: replace patch("hermes_cli.banner.os.getenv") with
  monkeypatch.setenv("HERMES_HOME") — banner.py no longer imports os
  directly, it uses get_hermes_home() from hermes_constants.

- test_telegram_conflict/approval_buttons: provide real exception classes
  for telegram.error mock (NetworkError, TimedOut, BadRequest) so the
  except clause in connect() doesn't fail with "catching classes that do
  not inherit from BaseException" when xdist pollutes sys.modules.

* fix(tests): accept unavailable_models kwarg in _prompt_model_selection mock
