`scripts/run_tests.sh tests/<dir>/` is how a change gets its regression
coverage run, so a test filed under the wrong directory is a test nobody
runs when that code changes. Two kinds of drift had accumulated.
Parallel directories for one source package, folded into the mirror:
tests/acp -> tests/acp_adapter (its __init__/conftest move with it)
tests/cli -> tests/hermes_cli (prompt_toolkit fixture merged into
hermes_cli/conftest.py)
tests/run_agent -> tests/agent (backoff fixture becomes
agent/conftest.py)
tests/relay -> tests/gateway/relay
tests/state -> tests/hermes_state
246 loose files at tests/ root, routed by the package they import/patch:
hermes_cli, hermes_state, agent, gateway, tools, plugins, tui_gateway, cron.
Installer and desktop-update script tests go to tests/scripts/{install,
desktop_update}/. 43 tests of root-level modules (batch_runner, utils,
hermes_constants, packaging) stay at the root.
Filenames drop their issue numbers (95 files: test_89315_x.py -> test_x.py);
the number stays in the module docstring where it has context.
Collisions: test_cli_skin_integration.py existed in both tests/ and tests/cli
with different subsets — merged into one (10 tests, all kept);
run_agent/test_pre_compress_memory_context.py -> agent/..._handoff.py;
tests/test_account_usage.py -> agent/test_account_usage_fetch.py;
tests/test_web_server.py -> hermes_cli/test_web_server_ws_ping.py.
Deleted: test_minisweagent_path.py (empty since PR #2804),
test_model_picker_scroll.py (tested a private copy of the logic, imported
nothing), test_process_loop_event_loop_warning.py (asserted asyncio behaviour,
imported nothing from Hermes).
Repo-root path arithmetic (Path(__file__).parents[N], dirname chains) is
bumped for the 202 files that changed depth and verified by evaluating every
such expression against the new location. classify_changes' desktop-updater
lane prefix, tests-os.yml's ignore glob and every in-tree path comment follow
the moves. tests/test_tests_tree_layout.py keeps the tree from drifting back.
The bounded flush-scan in _flush_messages_to_session_db_unlocked skips
the identity-matched prefix of its previous snapshot, on the documented
assumption that no code path pops _DB_PERSISTED_MARKER from a live dict
in place. finalize_turn's pure-tool-call-tail fill is exactly that path:
it pops the marker so the filled content gets re-persisted — but the
cursor then skips the row anyway, so the delivered final response never
reaches state.db and /resume replays content="" (the #43849/#44100
class resurfacing via the perf cursor). Invalidate the cursor at the
pop site so the filled row is re-examined.
Phase 2c review follow-up on the id()-reuse persistence fix:
- test_recycled_id_in_dedup_set_still_persists_new_message seeded an EMPTY
dedup set, so it never injected a collision and passed under id-based dedup
too (couldn't distinguish the designs). Replace with
test_stale_seed_id_from_prior_flush_cannot_suppress_new_message, which asserts
the durable invariant: the seed is empty after every flush (mutation-checked:
removing the post-flush reset now fails BOTH id-reuse tests).
- Refresh the _flush_messages_to_session_db docstring: it still described the
old per-session identity tracking; document the intrinsic-marker mechanism,
that _flushed_db_message_ids is now a one-shot seed, and the shared-dict
mutation safety note.
_flush_messages_to_session_db deduped persisted messages with a retained
{id(msg)} set (_flushed_db_message_ids) kept across turns. Once a flushed dict
is dropped from the live list (scaffolding rewind / in-place compaction) and
GC'd, CPython recycles its address onto a new assistant/tool dict whose id()
collides with the stale entry — so the real turn is silently never written to
state.db.
Replace the retained id-set with an intrinsic _DB_PERSISTED_MARKER stamped on
each dict. The id-set is demoted to a one-shot seed (valid only while the
caller's objects are alive) that is translated to markers and cleared after
every flush, so no id() outlives a flush to alias a future message. The marker
is _-prefixed so the wire sanitizers strip it before any request leaves.
Preserves the existing _is_ephemeral_scaffolding skip. Salvaged from #50372.
