teknium1 d10bb2ab6f test: make tests/ mirror the source tree; drop issue numbers from filenames
`scripts/run_tests.sh tests/<dir>/` is how a change gets its regression
coverage run, so a test filed under the wrong directory is a test nobody
runs when that code changes. Two kinds of drift had accumulated.

Parallel directories for one source package, folded into the mirror:
  tests/acp        -> tests/acp_adapter   (its __init__/conftest move with it)
  tests/cli        -> tests/hermes_cli    (prompt_toolkit fixture merged into
                                           hermes_cli/conftest.py)
  tests/run_agent  -> tests/agent         (backoff fixture becomes
                                           agent/conftest.py)
  tests/relay      -> tests/gateway/relay
  tests/state      -> tests/hermes_state

246 loose files at tests/ root, routed by the package they import/patch:
hermes_cli, hermes_state, agent, gateway, tools, plugins, tui_gateway, cron.
Installer and desktop-update script tests go to tests/scripts/{install,
desktop_update}/. 43 tests of root-level modules (batch_runner, utils,
hermes_constants, packaging) stay at the root.

Filenames drop their issue numbers (95 files: test_89315_x.py -> test_x.py);
the number stays in the module docstring where it has context.

Collisions: test_cli_skin_integration.py existed in both tests/ and tests/cli
with different subsets — merged into one (10 tests, all kept);
run_agent/test_pre_compress_memory_context.py -> agent/..._handoff.py;
tests/test_account_usage.py -> agent/test_account_usage_fetch.py;
tests/test_web_server.py -> hermes_cli/test_web_server_ws_ping.py.
Deleted: test_minisweagent_path.py (empty since PR #2804),
test_model_picker_scroll.py (tested a private copy of the logic, imported
nothing), test_process_loop_event_loop_warning.py (asserted asyncio behaviour,
imported nothing from Hermes).

Repo-root path arithmetic (Path(__file__).parents[N], dirname chains) is
bumped for the 202 files that changed depth and verified by evaluating every
such expression against the new location. classify_changes' desktop-updater
lane prefix, tests-os.yml's ignore glob and every in-tree path comment follow
the moves. tests/test_tests_tree_layout.py keeps the tree from drifting back.

Teknium 2a95791992 simplify(compat): run_agent/model_tools/toolsets/acp/providers — drop 42 re-exports/aliases, repoint 15 callers + 99 test files
run_agent.py: delete the `# noqa: F401` re-export block (agent.process_bootstrap
OpenAI/_SafeWriter/_get_proxy_*, model_tools get_tool_definitions/
handle_function_call/check_toolset_requirements, FailoverReason,
_qwen_portal_headers/_routermint_headers, session_persistence names,
estimate_request_tokens_rough, ContextCompressor + friends, jittered_backoff,
prompt_builder names, message_sanitization names, tool_dispatch_helpers
names) — 41 names run_agent never used itself — and the `_STREAM_DIAG_HEADERS`
back-compat class alias (no in-tree reader). run_agent now imports only what
it uses (get_toolset_for_tool, is_local_endpoint, coalesce/uniquify tool-call
ids, cleanup_vm/get_active_env from terminal_tool_lifecycle).

agent/*: `_ra().X` late-binds that only reached a re-export now import the
defining module directly (agent_runtime_helpers -> process_bootstrap.OpenAI,
model_tools.handle_function_call, session_persistence._safe_session_filename_component;
agent_init -> model_tools.get_tool_definitions/check_toolset_requirements,
_lazy_headers("agent.client_lifecycle", ...) for qwen/routermint;
system_prompt -> agent.prompt_builder / model_tools directly, dropping its
own _ra() shim and the `_r` parameter threading). `_ra()` stays for
run_agent-resident names (logger, AIAgent, _hermes_home, _set_interrupt, ...).

toolsets.py: remove resolve_multiple_toolsets (shim-only, restored by
34abf954bd); tests/test_toolsets.py pins the same union behavior via
resolve_toolset over each name.

providers/__init__.py: drop the OMIT_TEMPERATURE re-export (no callers via the
package); ProviderProfile stays because __init__ uses it for annotations —
2 tests repointed to providers.base.

agent/iteration_budget.py: drop the "run_agent re-exports the class"
docstring pointer; 4 tests import IterationBudget from its home.

model_tools.py (arg_coercion names), agent/tool_executor.py, and
hermes_cli/cli_session_mixin.py repoints landed via a sibling commit on this
shared worktree.

Callers repointed: gateway/run.py, hermes_cli/cli_chat_turn_mixin.py,
hermes_cli/cli_tui_mixin.py, tui_gateway/session_workdir.py,
agent/transports/codex.py (one-line imports) + comment pointers in
tools/file_state.py, tools/schema_sanitizer.py, scripts/tool_search_livetest.py.
Tests: patch("run_agent.X") / monkeypatch.setattr(run_agent, "X") /
`from run_agent import X` -> defining module across 99 test files.

Hakan Baysal cb8027afed fix(sanitize): preserve assistant messages with tool_calls when stripping images
_strip_images_from_messages() deleted any non-tool message whose content
became empty after image removal. An assistant message whose content was
entirely images but which carried tool_calls was therefore dropped,
orphaning its paired tool responses — providers reject the next request
with unmatched tool_call_id errors (HTTP 400). Replace such messages
with the plaintext placeholder instead, exactly like tool-role messages.

Adds a regression test covering the assistant + tool_calls +
image-only-content case.

Closes #40463

Frowtek e1762bd30b fix(agent): drop the api_content sidecar when stripping images from history
`api_content` is the byte-stability sidecar from #67274: it holds the exact
bytes previously sent for a message, and every turn substitutes it back into
`content` when building `api_messages`. `drop_stale_api_content` exists so a
content rewrite cannot be replayed from it — its own docstring states the
contract, and names the historical image strip as one of the callers:

    Replaying the pre-rewrite sidecar would resend exactly what the rewrite
    removed, so it must be dropped — the cost is one cache boundary miss,
    never wrong content.

`_strip_images_from_messages` never drops it. The image-rejection recovery in
`conversation_loop` runs it over the persistent history, not just the per-call
copy:

    agent._vision_supported = False
    _imgs_removed = _strip_images_from_messages(messages)      # history
    if isinstance(api_messages, list):
        _strip_images_from_messages(api_messages)

and `api_messages` are copies (`api_msg = msg.copy()`), so the history message
keeps its sidecar. The strip is therefore undone on the very next turn.

Reproduced with the real functions:

    history content after strip : [{'type': 'text', 'text': 'look'}]
    sidecar still present       : True
    NEXT TURN sends : 'look<IMAGE BYTES SENT LAST TURN>'

This is worse than a one-turn glitch, because the recovery cannot fire again:
it is gated on `getattr(agent, "_vision_supported", True)` and just set that
False. So on every subsequent turn the sidecar re-injects the images, the
text-only endpoint rejects them again, and the branch that would strip them is
disabled — the session stays wedged on a 4xx it already knew how to fix.

Drop the sidecar on each message the strip rewrites, inside the function so
every caller is covered. Messages with no images keep theirs, so only the
rewritten message pays a cache boundary — the tradeoff the invariant
prescribes. The two sibling recovery paths, `_sanitize_messages_surrogates`
and `_sanitize_messages_non_ascii`, are already safe: both walk every string
field on the message and so scrub the sidecar in passing. This one only
touches `content`.

tests/run_agent/test_image_rejection_fallback.py: new
TestStripImagesDropsStaleApiContent — the rewritten message loses its sidecar,
the next turn does not resend the stripped images, the tool-placeholder rewrite
is covered too, and untouched messages keep their sidecar. All four fail on
main. 53 passed across the image-rejection and api_content-sidecar suites; 307
passed across the sanitization/image/sidecar/replay agent tests (8 failures in
test_image_routing.py / test_save_url_image.py are pre-existing and fail
identically on clean main).

Al Cooke 0241619068 fix: retry text-only on Codex invalid image data errors
Treat the ChatGPT Codex invalid image-data 400 as an image rejection so Hermes strips image parts and retries text-only instead of aborting the session. Add coverage for the exact error wording.

fkdls112 cd72689e03 fix(agent): strip images on Kimi/Moonshot 'failed to decode image' 400
Truncated or corrupt image bytes baked into immutable conversation history
get re-sent on every retry. Kimi/Moonshot reject them with HTTP 400
'prepare image failed ... failed to decode image: invalid or unsupported
image format', which was missing from _IMAGE_REJECTION_PHRASES, so the
turn exhausted retries and wedged the session instead of stripping the
images and recovering.

Adds the phrase to the recovery list plus a regression test mirroring the
exact Kimi error body. Complements PR #76896 (proactive full-decode
validation in vision_tools) with reactive recovery for already-poisoned
sessions. Fixes #76884.

Teknium 6b81590c55 test: prune low-value tests suite-wide (wave 1) — 46,820 → 28,106 test functions
Systematic prune per AGENTS.md test policy, one pass over every major
test tree (gateway, hermes_cli, tools, agent, run_agent, plugins, cli,
cron, tui_gateway, honcho/openviking, root-level):

- DELETE: source-reading tests (read_text/getsource on prod files),
  change-detector tests (exact catalog counts, model-name snapshots,
  config version literals), mock-echo tests (assert a mock returns what
  it was told), assertion-free/trivial tests, near-duplicate
  parametrizations (boundaries + one representative kept), async/sync
  twin duplicates, cosmetic within-file variations.
- KEEP (mandatory): security/redaction/approval guards, message-role
  alternation invariants, prompt-caching/deterministic-call-id
  invariants, issue-number regression tests (deduped), E2E tests.
- 6 test files deleted outright (script-style/no-assert or fully
  redundant); conftest.py, fakes/, fixtures/ untouched.
- tests/acp/conftest.py added: autouse fixture stubs the live
  models.dev/GitHub/Copilot/Anthropic inventory fetches that ACP server
  tests performed on every session create — test_server.py 147s → 3.4s,
  and the tests are now genuinely hermetic.
- Sleep-based slowness shrunk where safe (codex_ttfb_watchdog,
  compression_concurrent_fork, etc.); no wall-clock assertion tightened.

Verification: full hermetic suite via scripts/run_tests.sh —
2439 files, 31,130 tests passed, 0 failed, 0 flaky retries, 315s wall
(baseline: 583s wall, 13,564s subprocess CPU).

Teknium 1a570dae00 fix(image-routing): unblock message queue on OpenRouter 'no endpoints' image 404 (#53901)
The agent's image-rejection fallback strips images and retries text-only when
a provider rejects image content, which is what lets the gateway drain its
queued messages. The fallback only fires on a hardcoded phrase list, and the
OpenRouter wording — HTTP 404 'No endpoints found that support image input' —
was missing. For OpenRouter-routed non-vision models the fallback never fired,
the retry loop re-sent the same rejected request until exhaustion, and every
subsequent message (including plain text) stayed queued behind the stuck turn.

Add the phrase to _IMAGE_REJECTION_PHRASES (the 404 already passes the 4xx
gate). Add a positive test and a guard test so the sibling OpenRouter
'no endpoints ... data policy / guardrail' 404s do NOT get their images
stripped.

Fixes #21160. Reported by @liu14goal14-ux; PR #21198 by @ygd58.

Teknium 7026af4e23 fix(agent): catch ChatGPT-account Codex data-URL rejection so images are stripped instead of cascading to compression (#23602)
When the user's main provider is openai-codex on the ChatGPT-account
backend (https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex), sending a native image
attachment encodes it as data:image/...base64,... in the input_image
field. The OpenAI Responses API on the public endpoint accepts that, but
the ChatGPT-account variant rejects it with HTTP 400:

  Invalid 'input[N].content[K].image_url'. Expected a valid URL, but got
  a value with an invalid format.

Hermes' image-rejection phrase list didn't include this wording, so the
error escaped the strip-and-retry branch and fell through to the generic
recovery path: model fallback → context-too-large → compression cascade
→ auxiliary OpenRouter 402 spam (issue #23570).

Add a NARROW phrase keyed on the field-path apostrophe used by the Codex
Responses error format: "image_url'. expected". This matches the actual
error format without false-tripping on generic 'Expected a valid URL'
errors from unrelated tools (webhooks, redirect_uri, etc.). Once matched,
the existing branch strips images from history, sets _vision_supported=
False for the session, and retries text-only.

Refs #23570 (1 of 3 image-replay improvements; persistence rewrite to
store image PATHS instead of inlined base64 is a separate follow-up)

Teknium d0aad4b021 fix(computer-use): harden image-rejection fallback + AUTHOR_MAP
Follow-up to #15328's vision-unsupported retry branch in run_agent.py.

_strip_images_from_messages() previously deleted any message whose content
was entirely images. That's fine for synthetic user messages injected for
attachment delivery, but it breaks providers for tool-role messages — the
paired tool_call_id on the preceding assistant message ends up unmatched,
which OpenAI-compatible APIs reject with HTTP 400.

Fix: tool-role messages whose content becomes empty are replaced with a
plaintext placeholder that preserves the tool_call_id linkage. Only
non-tool messages are dropped. Added 10 tests covering the role-alternation
invariants + image-type coverage.

Image-rejection detector: expanded phrase list (image content not
supported / multimodal input / vision input / model does not support
image) and gated on 4xx status so transient 5xx errors never get
misinterpreted as 'server said no to images'. Detection is documented as
best-effort English phrase matching.
