`scripts/run_tests.sh tests/<dir>/` is how a change gets its regression
coverage run, so a test filed under the wrong directory is a test nobody
runs when that code changes. Two kinds of drift had accumulated.
Parallel directories for one source package, folded into the mirror:
tests/acp -> tests/acp_adapter (its __init__/conftest move with it)
tests/cli -> tests/hermes_cli (prompt_toolkit fixture merged into
hermes_cli/conftest.py)
tests/run_agent -> tests/agent (backoff fixture becomes
agent/conftest.py)
tests/relay -> tests/gateway/relay
tests/state -> tests/hermes_state
246 loose files at tests/ root, routed by the package they import/patch:
hermes_cli, hermes_state, agent, gateway, tools, plugins, tui_gateway, cron.
Installer and desktop-update script tests go to tests/scripts/{install,
desktop_update}/. 43 tests of root-level modules (batch_runner, utils,
hermes_constants, packaging) stay at the root.
Filenames drop their issue numbers (95 files: test_89315_x.py -> test_x.py);
the number stays in the module docstring where it has context.
Collisions: test_cli_skin_integration.py existed in both tests/ and tests/cli
with different subsets — merged into one (10 tests, all kept);
run_agent/test_pre_compress_memory_context.py -> agent/..._handoff.py;
tests/test_account_usage.py -> agent/test_account_usage_fetch.py;
tests/test_web_server.py -> hermes_cli/test_web_server_ws_ping.py.
Deleted: test_minisweagent_path.py (empty since PR #2804),
test_model_picker_scroll.py (tested a private copy of the logic, imported
nothing), test_process_loop_event_loop_warning.py (asserted asyncio behaviour,
imported nothing from Hermes).
Repo-root path arithmetic (Path(__file__).parents[N], dirname chains) is
bumped for the 202 files that changed depth and verified by evaluating every
such expression against the new location. classify_changes' desktop-updater
lane prefix, tests-os.yml's ignore glob and every in-tree path comment follow
the moves. tests/test_tests_tree_layout.py keeps the tree from drifting back.
classify_persistence_error bucketed every _DB_CORRUPTION_MARKERS hit as "corrupt",
so an error SQLite itself scoped to the FTS5 index layer (SQLITE_CORRUPT_VTAB, or an
`fts5: corrupt structure record for table "messages_fts"` report) that escaped the
write path — the detach in _enter_fts_fail_open refused (generation/lock check),
or a read/search path with no fail-open at all — reached the turn boundary and the
gateway startup notice as structural corruption: the turn ended with `.recover` /
restore-backup advice on a file whose canonical tables were provably healthy.
One provenance rule, hermes_state_errors.is_fts_scoped_corruption_error, now feeds
both the write-repair gate (SessionDB._is_fts_write_corruption_error delegates to it,
so the gateway transcript retry inherits it) and the classifier: a known result code
outranks prose (only SQLITE_CORRUPT_VTAB is FTS-scoped; bare SQLITE_CORRUPT/NOTADB
and any contradictory code fail closed), and without a code the text must both carry
a corruption marker and name a messages_fts* object. The new "fts_index" cause
renders index-scoped guidance (doctor --fix / restart, do not run recovery) in the
turn explainer and the home-channel notice. The structural fail-close is untouched:
bare malformed / not-a-database still quarantine and still classify "corrupt".
Salvaged from PR #97843 (SulthanZahran1), trimmed: the quick_check-backed
"corrupt_unconfirmed" tier is dropped — on a live handle that just observed an
unscoped SQLITE_CORRUPT, PRAGMA quick_check on a damaged shadow b-tree raises rather
than reports on 3.53.1, so the probe could never downgrade the exact shape it was
built for, and a verdict that softens quarantine guidance on prose alone weakens the
fail-close. #97841 (Finn763) reached the same fts_index cause via text markers
only; its LIKE-degradation intent already lives in _search_messages_impl (_fts_stale).

Classify deleted WAL generations separately from main-file replacement and point operators at the captured-generation manifest and mode-aware recovery path.

The corrupt-cause recovery guidance hardcoded `~/.hermes/backups/` while
every other path in the same message follows the active HERMES_HOME
(`{db_path}` is already interpolated). A custom-home or named-profile
deployment was told to restore from a directory that may not exist at all,
mid data-loss incident. Both sites (turn-completion explainer and gateway
startup broadcast) now interpolate `<hermes_root>/backups` via
get_default_hermes_root(), matching hermes_cli/backup.py's real backup
location.
Fixes#104250
hermes_state.py: delete every '# noqa: F401 (re-exported...)' import block (hermes_state_common/errors/guard/
readpool/sessions/fts/dbfile/wal/repair/registry + agent.context_compressor _DB_PERSISTED_MARKER_KEY); keep
only the names hermes_state.py itself uses, without noqa.
hermes_state_registry.py: drop get_shared_session_db/release_shared_session_db/close_shared_session_dbs
aliases; every caller (gateway/, tools/, tui_gateway/, cron/, mcp_serve, run_agent, tests) now imports
acquire/release/close_all/release_or_close from hermes_state_registry.
hermes_state_titles.py: drop set_auto_title_if_empty shim (title_generator keeps its getattr fallback).
Re-remove shim-only names restored by 34abf954bd: latest_user_message_row_id (tests call
latest_message_row_id(key, role='user'); role-targeting assertions kept) and get_session_activity (tests
build the snapshot via agent.session_activity.build_activity_snapshot over db.get_session(sid)).
hermes_state_wal._log_once resolves its dedupe sets as module globals instead of via hermes_state;
hermes_state_repair helpers call module globals directly (tests patch hermes_state_repair.<name>).
Frozen updater surface untouched (update_cmd_maint imports only SessionDB from hermes_state).
run_agent.py: delete the `# noqa: F401` re-export block (agent.process_bootstrap
OpenAI/_SafeWriter/_get_proxy_*, model_tools get_tool_definitions/
handle_function_call/check_toolset_requirements, FailoverReason,
_qwen_portal_headers/_routermint_headers, session_persistence names,
estimate_request_tokens_rough, ContextCompressor + friends, jittered_backoff,
prompt_builder names, message_sanitization names, tool_dispatch_helpers
names) — 41 names run_agent never used itself — and the `_STREAM_DIAG_HEADERS`
back-compat class alias (no in-tree reader). run_agent now imports only what
it uses (get_toolset_for_tool, is_local_endpoint, coalesce/uniquify tool-call
ids, cleanup_vm/get_active_env from terminal_tool_lifecycle).
agent/*: `_ra().X` late-binds that only reached a re-export now import the
defining module directly (agent_runtime_helpers -> process_bootstrap.OpenAI,
model_tools.handle_function_call, session_persistence._safe_session_filename_component;
agent_init -> model_tools.get_tool_definitions/check_toolset_requirements,
_lazy_headers("agent.client_lifecycle", ...) for qwen/routermint;
system_prompt -> agent.prompt_builder / model_tools directly, dropping its
own _ra() shim and the `_r` parameter threading). `_ra()` stays for
run_agent-resident names (logger, AIAgent, _hermes_home, _set_interrupt, ...).
toolsets.py: remove resolve_multiple_toolsets (shim-only, restored by
34abf954bd); tests/test_toolsets.py pins the same union behavior via
resolve_toolset over each name.
providers/__init__.py: drop the OMIT_TEMPERATURE re-export (no callers via the
package); ProviderProfile stays because __init__ uses it for annotations —
2 tests repointed to providers.base.
agent/iteration_budget.py: drop the "run_agent re-exports the class"
docstring pointer; 4 tests import IterationBudget from its home.
model_tools.py (arg_coercion names), agent/tool_executor.py, and
hermes_cli/cli_session_mixin.py repoints landed via a sibling commit on this
shared worktree.
Callers repointed: gateway/run.py, hermes_cli/cli_chat_turn_mixin.py,
hermes_cli/cli_tui_mixin.py, tui_gateway/session_workdir.py,
agent/transports/codex.py (one-line imports) + comment pointers in
tools/file_state.py, tools/schema_sanitizer.py, scripts/tool_search_livetest.py.
Tests: patch("run_agent.X") / monkeypatch.setattr(run_agent, "X") /
`from run_agent import X` -> defining module across 99 test files.
A bare SQLITE_CORRUPT/NOTADB on a live write (not FTS-scoped, not a
replaced file) now sets a sticky per-instance flag: later writes fail
fast with StateDbCorruptError, the handle never reopens after close(),
and close() skips its explicit PASSIVE WAL checkpoint. Gateway and agent
flush paths divert pending transcripts to JSONL/spool like the replaced
case instead of retrying forever.
Field evidence: a handle that kept writing for ~50 minutes after the
first structural error checkpointed 15 pages under the wrong page
numbers on shutdown (page 1 <- messages_fts_trigram_data leaf), turning
"malformed" into "file is not a database".

'database disk image is malformed' contains the word 'disk', so
classify_persistence_error bucketed SQLITE_CORRUPT / SQLITE_NOTADB
failures as 'disk' and the turn-completion explainer told users to
free disk space for a structurally damaged state.db (the #77386-family
misdiagnosis, reproduced in the v0.20.0 malformed-DB incident report).
- hermes_state: new 'corrupt' bucket in PERSISTENCE_ERROR_CAUSES,
matched via _DB_CORRUPTION_MARKERS BEFORE the locked/disk buckets
- run_agent: explainer text for 'corrupt' points at hermes doctor and
explicitly says freeing space will not help
- cron explainer-variant suppression picks the new variant up
automatically (it iterates PERSISTENCE_ERROR_CAUSES)
_file_mutation_verifier_enabled and _turn_completion_explainer_enabled
re-read config.yaml on every call via load_config() (~1ms deepcopy per
call). finalize_turn runs these gates at the end of every turn, so each
turn paid two redundant config deepcopies. The sibling
_credits_notices_enabled already caches on self; mirror that pattern.
The env-var override stays authoritative and uncached, so runtime flips
still work. Config flips now apply on the next session, matching the
documented sibling semantics.

Refresh-loss interrupt is cooperative, so a stalled writer could still flush after another process reclaimed the conversation. Carry the holder into append_message / append_messages_batch and reject the write in the same SQLite transaction when the lease row is missing, expired, or owned by someone else.
Post-merge simplify finding on #81613: the wrapper's docstring claimed it
existed for 'existing callers', but every caller was introduced by the same
PR - there was never a pre-existing import path to preserve. All callers
(conversation_loop, tool_executor, run_agent's own flush handler, tests)
now import the canonical hermes_state.classify_persistence_error directly,
matching how is_disk_full_error is consumed. No behavior change; imports
stay lazy inside the exception handlers.
- Move classify_persistence_error into hermes_state beside is_disk_full_error
and delegate the disk bucket to it (fixes 'ENOSPC writing state.db' and
'not enough space' classifying as unknown). run_agent keeps a thin lazy
delegating wrapper so the documented import path and fast import survive.
- Classify CompressionSessionBusyError (and its RPC-wrapped message forms)
as 'locked': the motivating #81227 failure mode stringifies to 'is being
compressed by another writer', which the substring heuristic missed.
- Export PERSISTENCE_ERROR_CAUSES and iterate it in the cron explainer
suppression instead of a hardcoded tuple, so a future cause bucket cannot
silently desynchronize cron delivery.
- Hedge the gateway locked/unknown recovery wording ('should already be
saved' instead of 'was recorded') to match the explainer - the early
turn-start persist may also have failed.
- Drop STATE_DB_WAL_WARN_BYTES (speculative dead constant with no consumer;
the pre-existing 50 MB doctor WAL check covers the warning).
- Tests: compression-busy classification, is_disk_full_error delegation,
causes-tuple coverage; mutation-checked red-green.
An enterprise deployment hit sustained SQLite write-lock contention on a
shared multi-gigabyte state.db (gateway + CLI processes writing
concurrently). Turns correctly failed closed with
session_persistence_failed, but the only user-facing wording claimed the
disk was full and the gateway rendered a generic failure.
The fast-fail semantics are deliberate and unchanged. This adds a pure
classifier (locked / disk / unknown) applied where the SQLite error is
still visible, threads the cause through the turn-completion explainer,
and stamps a machine-readable failure_reason
(session_persistence_failed:<cause>) plus a guaranteed non-empty error on
the result for downstream surfaces. The cron scheduler's explainer-text
suppression now matches every cause variant so refined wording cannot
leak into scheduled-job deliveries.
The 1.0s sleep between sequential tool calls has been present since the
initial commit with no documented rationale. It sleeps between local
tool executions — the next LLM request goes out only after the whole
batch — so it rate-limits nothing, and the parallel read-only path
already runs with no delay. Every multi-tool turn pays (N-1) seconds
of dead time. Remove the sleep, the internal tool_delay plumbing, and
dead test assignments. AIAgent.__init__ keeps tool_delay as a
deprecated no-op keyword for one release so existing programmatic
callers construct cleanly; passing it emits a DeprecationWarning.
- codex app-server sibling path: surface a WARNING (was silent debug) when
the projected-message flush fails — same bug class as the main fix, but
codex output has already streamed so fail-closed and agent_persisted=False
are both wrong here (#860/#42039 duplicate-write hazard); loud durability
gap logging instead.
- map session_persistence_failed in _format_turn_completion_explanation so
the user sees an actionable reason instead of 'The request failed:
unknown error' + explainer test.
- contributors/emails mapping for elco@thedaoist.gg (attribution CI).
Follow-up to the salvaged #34452 turn-completion explainer:
- Register display.turn_completion_explainer: True in DEFAULT_CONFIG so the
setting is discoverable, matching the file_mutation_verifier precedent.
- Shorten the repeated footer prefix from 'Turn ended without a usable
reply: ' to 'No reply: ' so the 10 reason variants don't all open with
the same 8-word boilerplate.
- Update the 7 assertions that referenced the old prefix.
When a turn ends abnormally after substantive tool calls (empty content
after retries, a partial/truncated stream, exhausted retries, or an
iteration/budget limit), the CLI/TUI response area was left blank or
showed only a fragment (e.g. "The") with no consolidated reason. The
internal turn_exit_reason values (empty_response_exhausted,
partial_stream_recovery, etc.) were never surfaced to the user.
Add a turn-completion explainer that mirrors the existing file-mutation
verifier footer: at turn end, map an abnormal turn_exit_reason to a
short, actionable message and either replace the bare "(empty)"
sentinel or append the reason after a partial fragment. Normal
text_response exits (e.g. a terse "Done.") stay quiet.
Gated by display.turn_completion_explainer (default on) with
HERMES_TURN_COMPLETION_EXPLAINER env override, matching the
file-mutation verifier seam.
