`scripts/run_tests.sh tests/<dir>/` is how a change gets its regression
coverage run, so a test filed under the wrong directory is a test nobody
runs when that code changes. Two kinds of drift had accumulated.
Parallel directories for one source package, folded into the mirror:
tests/acp -> tests/acp_adapter (its __init__/conftest move with it)
tests/cli -> tests/hermes_cli (prompt_toolkit fixture merged into
hermes_cli/conftest.py)
tests/run_agent -> tests/agent (backoff fixture becomes
agent/conftest.py)
tests/relay -> tests/gateway/relay
tests/state -> tests/hermes_state
246 loose files at tests/ root, routed by the package they import/patch:
hermes_cli, hermes_state, agent, gateway, tools, plugins, tui_gateway, cron.
Installer and desktop-update script tests go to tests/scripts/{install,
desktop_update}/. 43 tests of root-level modules (batch_runner, utils,
hermes_constants, packaging) stay at the root.
Filenames drop their issue numbers (95 files: test_89315_x.py -> test_x.py);
the number stays in the module docstring where it has context.
Collisions: test_cli_skin_integration.py existed in both tests/ and tests/cli
with different subsets — merged into one (10 tests, all kept);
run_agent/test_pre_compress_memory_context.py -> agent/..._handoff.py;
tests/test_account_usage.py -> agent/test_account_usage_fetch.py;
tests/test_web_server.py -> hermes_cli/test_web_server_ws_ping.py.
Deleted: test_minisweagent_path.py (empty since PR #2804),
test_model_picker_scroll.py (tested a private copy of the logic, imported
nothing), test_process_loop_event_loop_warning.py (asserted asyncio behaviour,
imported nothing from Hermes).
Repo-root path arithmetic (Path(__file__).parents[N], dirname chains) is
bumped for the 202 files that changed depth and verified by evaluating every
such expression against the new location. classify_changes' desktop-updater
lane prefix, tests-os.yml's ignore glob and every in-tree path comment follow
the moves. tests/test_tests_tree_layout.py keeps the tree from drifting back.
Re-applies the gateway compat removal byte-for-byte; see 92d0bd0d73 for the
full inventory (30 re-exports/aliases + 2 shim modules dropped, 3 shim-only
names re-removed, 24 callers + 34 test files repointed). No new changes.
- deadline: _result()/_abandon() replace 7 BoundedResult constructions and 2
cancel+callback sites; timers handled as a list; dead raise_if_timed_out removed.
- file_safety: retired classify_cross_profile_target (0 refs; get_cross_profile_warning
stub kept for external callers), _home_and_resolved/_mirror_warning shared by
the sandbox/container mirror guards; _find_sandbox_mirror_segments inlined.
- estop: _hermes_home/_canonical_root now the file_safety helpers;
_reset_log_state_for_tests inlined into its only test.
- subagent_lifecycle: _validate_request driven by _UNSUPPORTED_REQUEST_FIELDS table.
- turn_liveness: dead start()/_abort_message removed, _emit_warning shared.
- process_bootstrap: _enable_happy_eyeballs reused by the client variant.
- Comment/docstring compaction across the remaining leaf modules.
Profile processes launch with HERMES_HOME=~/.hermes/profiles/<name>, so
`hermes pause` at the fleet root did not bind fleet-analyst dispatch
(t_7b65ff88). Check/resume both the process home and the fleet root.
Four fix-forwards from the adversarial post-merge audit of the Aug 7
unreviewed merge batch:
- estop (#81148): is_engaged() now fails SAFE (engaged) on stat errors;
the gateway estop gate lets recognized slash commands and replies owned
by in-flight work (update prompts, clarify, slash-confirm, tool
approvals, running sessions) through instead of consuming them; new
gateway /pause [reason|off] command gives messaging-only operators an
in-band engage/resume path (busy_policy=dispatch so it works mid-run).
- cron monitor mode (#81138): execution-mode invariants (monitor x
no_agent, monitor_script x monitor_url, no_agent-requires-script) now
have ONE owner (_validate_job_mode_invariants) called from BOTH
create_job and update_job, so the create-time invariant can no longer
be silently violated through the update door.
- cron notepad (#81139): remove_job now clears the job's notepad rows
(clear_notepad was dead code -> orphaned KV state forever); clear is
best-effort and no-ops without creating notepad.db.
- delegation batch gate (#81141): template-marker regex narrowed to
multi-word placeholder shapes only (<feature name>, {file_path}) so
generics (Vec<T>), HTML tags, JSON snippets, glob braces and f-string
style no longer reject legitimate batches; duplicate-goal rejection
removed (best-of-N fan-outs are legitimate).
Resumable ESTOP sentinel at $HERMES_HOME/ESTOP that halts NEW work only:
- agent/estop.py: sentinel engage/disengage/is_engaged (single stat, no
caching), optional reason + timestamp stored as JSON, paused_reply()
notice, check_paused() log-once-per-engagement helper. Corrupt/empty
sentinel still pauses (fail safe); a `touch ~/.hermes/ESTOP` works.
- cron/scheduler.py: tick() skips dispatch while engaged (logged once per
engagement, not per tick). Due jobs simply wait for the next tick after
resume — in-flight runs are never touched.
- gateway/kanban_watchers.py: dispatcher skips auto-decompose and worker
spawning while engaged; zombie reaping still runs and running workers
finish naturally.
- gateway/run.py: new gateway turns (post-auth, non-internal) get a brief
"Hermes is paused" reply instead of an agent run. Internal events
(in-flight background completions) bypass the gate.
- hermes_cli/subcommands/pause.py: `hermes pause [--reason]` and
`hermes resume`, wired into main() and _BUILTIN_SUBCOMMANDS.
- hermes_cli/status.py: `hermes status` shows a PAUSED banner (one stat).
- tests/test_estop.py: 20 tests — sentinel lifecycle, reason surfacing,
log-once, cron skip + resume, kanban gate, gateway paused reply +
internal bypass, CLI idempotence, builtin-set parity, status line.
Never kills in-flight work; resumable with no restart. Footprint ladder:
CLI command only, no new model tool, no new env vars.
Ported from: gastownhall/gastown estop.go (MIT); related prior art:
#26778 (/panic — kill/exit semantics, deliberately different: ours is a
resumable pause), #44617 (interrupt in-flight cron — out of scope here).
