Austin Pickett 36010d0bba fix(desktop): a lone chat keeps its tab strip while another chat zone is open
Dragging a session tab out of the main strip into its own zone left the
workspace alone in main. Auto treated a lone pane as "not a tab", and the
uncloseable workspace is not stranded, so main lost its tab and its "+" —
while the tile it had just split from kept a strip of its own. Two chats
side by side, one with tabs and one without, reads as "the tabs
disappeared"; ⌥⌘T only helped because it wrote an explicit `always`.

The resolver gains one input, `siblingMainZone`: on auto, a lone main tile
keeps its strip whenever another zone in the layout also hosts a main tile.
A chat that is the whole window stays chromeless, side chrome is untouched,
and an explicit `never` still wins so Hide tabs keeps working.

Both callers read it from `$mainTileZoneCount`, a computed over the tree,
the hidden set and the registry version. It is a number, so zones re-render
only when a main zone appears or goes — never per sash-drag frame — and the
store's answer (what the toggle command flips against) and the strip on
screen cannot disagree.

teknium1 69fd61b0ef fix(desktop): anchor the first-paint backfill so long sessions stop lurching (#99920)
Switching to a long tool-heavy session still painted the tail, then jumped a
full viewport when the first backfill step committed, on current main.

Root cause: anchorBeforePrepend() skipped while the load was unsettled, but the
settle loop hands a bottom-pinned load back at the FIRST-PAINT height, before
the backfill transition commits. Every backfill step therefore ran unanchored;
the prepend grew scrollHeight by thousands of px with scrollTop untouched and
the view sat near the top until use-stick-to-bottom's ResizeObserver re-pinned
it frames later (measured CLS 0.6-1.0 per switch, layout-shift entries of 0.61).

Fix:
- anchor a bottom-pinned load even while unsettled (shouldAnchorBeforePrepend);
  an unsettled offset restore still never anchors, the settle loop owns it
- record the anchor's scrollHeight and consume it only on a taller tree, so a
  commit that does not grow content (transcript arriving under the first-paint
  budget, a store-window refresh) cannot spend the anchor as a no-op
- clear any anchor on a cold switch, not only on a key change: the stale rows
  shown under the new key are collapsed by the swap and the anchor with them
- do not arm the backfill while the transcript is empty or nothing is hidden

Live A/B (isolated Desktop, Xvfb, CDP layout-shift capture, 3 rounds x 2 long
sessions): main CLS 0.19-0.65 with one-frame 3-4k px scroll jumps every switch;
fixed CLS 0 on every warm switch and no scroll jump (cold first open of a
session keeps only the sub-0.1 first-paint shifts). Show-earlier and remembered
offset restore controls unchanged.

Robin Fernandes 16def7b8cc fix(free-tier): the desktop renders a free-tier refusal as its own card, not an OAuth re-login
A welcome-tier 403 classifies as auth_permanent, so the desktop's error
surface mapped it to "Your Nous Portal sign-in expired" with a Nous Portal
re-login button — the chat sentence never reached the user. Terminal results
on the free route now carry a structured free_tier block (kind + the chat
sentence); agent/error_surface.py turns it into a free_tier_<kind> code on
the provider layer with the sentence as `message`. The desktop gives those
codes their own titles, shows the backend sentence as the body, and offers
"Sign in with a Nous account" (the free-tier dialog) instead of the OAuth
re-login, with Retry only where a later send can succeed.

Robin Fernandes 59fad62a40 fix(free-tier): review follow-ups — read the classifier's context, never replace a locked identity, re-inventory on retry
Correctness
- The welcome-tier recovery hooks (model_not_free move, wrong-host heal) and
  the long-wait rate-limit check read the turn's extract_api_error_context()
  dict, which never carries welcome_refusal / welcome_route. They now read
  classified.error_context, where _nous_welcome_tier parks them; the guard
  records the classifier's reset_at. Tests drive the real classifier and the
  real extractor so the two-context boundary is exercised.
- The connector path caught every AnonCredentialDead and re-minted; a locked
  account (anon_account_locked) is now retired without replacement, matching
  the inference resolver.
- A background bootstrap retry reused the boot-time provider inventory; it
  re-inventories, so a provider connected during the cooldown keeps
  inference.
- The desktop's setup.ready listener only refreshes an untouched picker
  (oauth mode, no local endpoint, idle flow) and re-checks after the
  readiness round, so an API-key form opened meanwhile is never dismissed.
- /__log on the rehearsal server sent its response while holding the state
  lock that _send re-acquires; the log is copied out first.

Reductions
- One shared FakePortal / install_portal (tests/hermes_cli/anon_portal.py)
  behind both free-tier fixtures, with a single httpx.Client transport seam.
- The rehearsal server's static inference answers are a table; dead
  scaffolding (REAL_PAID_URL, claim_codes, the no-op dead_once branch,
  extra_headers) removed.
- Setup-notice copy is a code-to-key map; its test uses real codes (the old
  loop built nonexistent ones and only exercised the fallback).
- The ineffective FreeTierErrorCode union is gone.

Robin Fernandes 51e39af967 feat(free-tier): ruled behaviour for every welcome-api failure, with friendly copy and a fault-injecting rehearsal server
The free tier depends on the account service (NAS) and the welcome inference
host, and Hermes had no honest answer for most of the ways either can refuse
or fail: the NAS codes it matched were never sent, the tier-dark 403 carried
no message to match, a single boot-time blip disabled minting for the whole
process, and a structured rate-limit refusal never reached the cross-session
guard, so the "sign in for a bigger allowance" prompt was dead code.

Backend
- anon_auth: classify what NAS actually sends (404 not_found, 503
  temporarily_disabled, 429 + Retry-After, 428 pow_*, 403 account_locked)
  into one ANON_* code each, carrying retry_after / retryable on AuthError.
- Replace the process-lifetime mint memo with a per-profile cooldown that
  honours the server's wait, climbs a short ladder when the service is
  unreachable, never retries terminal codes, and yields to the user's own
  retry (force=True).
- Bootstrap record carries error_code / retryable / retry_after; a bounded
  background loop retries transient failures and re-announces setup.ready.
  setup.status and free_tier.status expose the block; free_tier.provision is
  the forced retry.
- Inference: a generic 403 from a welcome host is the tier refusing (keyed on
  the route); model_not_free moves onto the gateway's alternate once;
  anon_on_paid_host re-reads the route once; a long rate_limited refusal
  trips the cross-session guard; a locked account is retired but never
  replaced; terminal copy on the free route is one plain sentence.
- Sign-in: Failed keeps the service's code and wait; account_busy is
  retryable; the OAuth poll reports retryable / retry_after.
- All user-facing copy rewritten for first-time users: never "the free
  service is off" (what is unavailable is using Hermes without signing in,
  and signing in is free), no jargon, spoken waits.

Desktop
- A setup-failure notice above the provider picker: one sentence per code,
  a retry when the backend says one can work, the sign-in pointer only when
  the account service answered at all. The overlay re-checks readiness on
  setup.ready so a background success dismisses it.
- Sign-in dialog gains busy / unreachable / unavailable screens.

Rehearsal
- scripts/free_tier_fault_server.py stands in for both services with the
  real wire contract and a CORS-open scenario switch; HERMES_EXTRA_WELCOME_HOSTS
  (dev-only, env-only) lets the route rules treat it as the welcome host.

teknium1 bc59c39cfd docs(desktop): point the copy-control inset comment at the real scroller
The salvaged comment cited tool/fallback.tsx, which does not exist; name ExpandableBlock/CodeCardBody (the .scrollbar-overlay scroller) and log-tail.tsx (the 12px sibling) instead.

David Metcalfe 6e04bf8e59 fix(desktop): keep the code-block copy control clear of the scrollbar
The fenced code card's scroller (CodeCardBody / ExpandableBlock) carries
`.scrollbar-overlay`, which hands the card's right edge back to the
platform's ~15-17px scrollbar lane. The hover copy control sat at a 6px
inset with a 10px icon, inside that lane and on top of the bar itself.
Inset it 16px and use the 12px icon the other corner copy controls use
(log-tail.tsx).

Salvaged from #110548 without its className change-detector test; the fix
is pure CSS (Tailwind inset/icon size) and is verified by a static trace
against the .scrollbar-overlay scroller.

Siddharth Balyan 1ab32b212b feat(connectors): the connector card offers one verb per row; Continue is the only way out (#110843)
The card offers; the transcript explains. One shell, one heading, one row per app:
a 16 px state mark (hollow circle, spinning arc, check), the brand chip, the name, one
cue on the row whose link is open ("Waiting for your browser…"), and one verb in a
fixed lane (Connect / Try again / Install). A resolved row shows no control.
Continue sits below the shell and is the one exit; the per-row Not now is gone, so
every open row settles as "Not connected".

No reason or error text lives in the card. A sign-in failure is a background event:
the row's verb becomes Try again and the model's reply after Continue explains. A
click that changed nothing (a refused re-mint) is the one toast: "Could not start
authorization for <app>." A successful Try again opens the fresh link at once.

The MCP setup card is the same component with Install / Enable / Authorize as the
verb: every target gets a row (a two-server call no longer strands the second one),
Continue below, no catalog source line. The settled card keeps its scaffold rows and
says three words: Connected, Skipped, Not connected.

Design of record: Paper 01M29RZY5NDXT7CN7MBWQT0HRW, page B-0, artboard ZV6-0
("Variation 2b"). Presentation only; no wire change.

Tests are behaviour contracts, run red first: one verb per row and no reason; the
mark carries the state; Try again mints on the open operation and opens the link; a
refused Try again toasts and keeps the verb; Continue settles; settled rows carry no
detail text; the MCP card lists every target live and settled.

Siddharth Balyan ee2f5629b8 Desktop connect runs on the connection operation: one card, no link to the model, no renderer polling (NS-868) (#110574)
* refactor(connectors): cut comments that restate the code

Connector modules (tools/connectors, tui_gateway connector RPCs, desktop
connector card/store) keep only comments that carry a non-derivable why or
a cross-module contract. No behaviour change.

* feat(connectors): managed connect runs on the connection operation

Managed `connect` / `reconnect` mint one ConnectionOperation for every target and, on a
desktop session, block the tool turn until the operation settles; the result is per-target
outcomes and never carries a connect link. Off the desktop the result carries the links and
returns at once (PR3 delivers them as their own message).

Why: the previous leg handed the model a URL and a `wait` verb, and the renderer ran its own
2s poller on top of the backend's 5s one; both walked the whole gateway catalog at two vendor
calls per page to read one row (~3 Composio calls/s per pending target). A hidden composer
message started the model's `wait` on the user's behalf. None of it was observable from the
operation the MCP leg already used.

What the operation looks like now:
- `contract.py`: TargetState / Actor / SettleReason enums and the `(kind, from) -> {to: actor}`
  transition table. `operation.transition()` enforces it; a card cannot claim a managed
  target `connected`, only the backend watcher can.
- `live.py`: one open operation per session, found by `op_id`. `connectors.operation.status`
  reads it, `connection.respond` drives it, `pending_connection` on resume replays it.
- `run.py`: the one lifecycle for both target kinds (prepare -> card -> wake/observe loop ->
  settle -> result). The managed `observe` hook polls the gateway list once per tick for the
  whole operation; the exact-status route replaces that call when the gateway ships it.
- `connection.update` is emitted on every transition and on settlement; registered in the
  shared event contract with the operation vocabulary typed on the TS side.
- `wait`, `_rendered_links`, `_seen_instructions`, the just-minted bounce and `_clamp_timeout`
  are deleted. `force` on `reconnect` always reinitiates; plain `reconnect` repairs only what
  the gateway reports disconnected.
- `connections.wait_timeout_seconds` is removed from config defaults, the example and the
  docs. The deadline is `OPERATION_DEADLINE_SECONDS = 300` in `operation.py`; the key was
  added on this unmerged train so no migration is needed.
- Wire model: `statusReason` parsed on connection results; the seven-state `connectionStatus`
  is typed on list items and an unknown value fails validation; `CONNECTION_REQUIRED` carries
  `connect_card_available` instead of the link when the session platform is `desktop`.

Session platform, not callback presence, decides whether a card exists: the GUI bridge
attaches callbacks to every backend session, terminal TUI included.

* feat(desktop): connector card subscribes to the connection operation

The card renders from the backend's operation instead of driving its own: `connector-flow.ts`
(the renderer's 2s `connectors.list` poller, its 120s client deadline and `keepWaiting`) is
deleted, and both hidden composer submits in `connector-tool.tsx` go with it. The model is
never nudged into a `wait`; the tool call is blocked on the backend until the operation
settles.

- `connection-request.ts` is the operation store: keyed by `op_id`, one entry per session,
  `applyOperationStatus` / `applyConnectionUpdate` as pure reducers, `respond` leaves the
  entry in place (the backend answers with `connection.update`), `ConnectionTargetOutcome`
  is a discriminated union the backend's transition table accepts.
- `input-requests.ts` applies `connection.update`; `connection.expire` and the resume
  snapshot correlate by `op_id` (a snapshot has no `request_id`).
- `ConnectorOffer` renders one `ConnectorCard` per target from a single
  `Record<ConnectionTargetState, phase>` table; Connect opens the stored link, Try again on
  failed / expired reissues through `connectors.connect` on the open operation, Not now is a
  per-target `skipped`, Continue settles. A settled operation renders `ConnectorSummary` rows
  with no live control.
- `tool-render-class.ts`: `manage_connections` renders the card regardless of
  `HERMES_GUEST_ONBOARDING`; the flag still gates the onboarding flow, not the card. The
  backend gate already decided admission; a card only exists because the tool was admitted.
- `mcp-setup-tool.tsx` speaks the same outcome vocabulary (connected / skipped / failed).
- `ConnectorRow.connectionStatus` is the seven-state literal union, not `string | null`.
- The guided-onboarding poller (`first-build-connectors.ts`) keeps its own row/phase types
  and compiles unchanged; PR3 moves it onto the operation.

anti-slop: no net-new findings (17 touched files vs 11d1a12472).

* fix(connectors): the card never parks the tool thread; every update carries the snapshot

Found by the pre-PR adversarial review and a real-path E2E test (both left in the tree).

- The desktop `connection_callback` was still `_block("connection.request", ...)`, which parked
  the tool thread on a private request-id Event until a `_respond` that no longer exists for
  this event. `connection.respond` settled the operation but the tool waited its full deadline
  before the watcher loop even started. The callback now only emits the card; the operation's
  own wake loop is the wait. The MCP leg's blocking bridge goes with it: the card answers
  through `connection.respond` like every other card.
- `connection.request` and every `connection.update` frame carry the full target snapshot
  (state, link, detail). The initial mint happened before the card existed, so the renderer
  never saw the links and Connect stayed disabled; a Continue settlement stamped
  `not_connected` on the backend while the card still showed `initiated`. The store now
  overlays the snapshot; no state is reconstructed from deltas.
- The `connection.update` emitter is a class-level `on_change` slot on the operation, set
  once by `register()` (a second `register()` no longer stacks wrappers); session lookup takes
  `_sessions_lock`; a re-minted link on an `initiated` target goes through `refresh_link()`
  and emits, instead of a bare attribute write.
- `session.interrupt` is checked before the first observe, so an interrupted call settles
  `interrupt`, not `all_resolved`.
- A gateway list reporting `expired` for an initiated target is recorded with actor `clock`
  (the contract's owner of that edge); it raised `IllegalTransition` before.
- Dead `keepWaiting` i18n keys from the deleted renderer poller removed.

tests/tui_gateway/test_connector_operation_e2e.py runs the desktop lifecycle through the real
tool, registry, gateway RPC handlers and callback bridge with only the HTTP client faked.

* docs(connectors): prompts and docs describe the operation, not the deleted wait verb

The onboarding prompts told the model to call action="wait" with timeout_seconds and to
expect a hidden [setup]/[connectors] note; both are gone. tool-search.md and
toolsets-reference.md said the model gets a connect link on the desktop. tui_gateway/AGENTS.md
gains the connection-operation row of the surface table.

* fix(connectors): the panel re-mints only a dead link

Try again on a failed or expired target mints a fresh link on the open operation. A waiting
target keeps the link it was minted with; the card reopens it and connectors.connect refuses
to spend a second mint (LINK_STILL_VALID). The unused refresh_link() goes. The package
docstring names the new siblings; the nine-name public surface is unchanged.

* test(connectors): the local-batch test answers the operation the way the card does

The callback stopped returning an answer in f782b26d98 (the card answers through
connection.respond); this test still returned one and waited out the 300s deadline in CI.

* ci: retrigger

* fix(connectors): the desktop card appears outside guided onboarding

Live on a signed-in macOS desktop, the two-app connect never showed a card. Three
defects, each hidden by a test that bound state the running app never binds.

The backend read the surface from HERMES_SESSION_PLATFORM only. The desktop and TUI
gateway bind it as HERMES_SESSION_SOURCE (_set_session_context), so session_platform()
was "" and managed connects took the off-desktop branch: links in the model's message,
no operation. session_platform() now reads platform, then source. The E2E test binds
through server._set_session_context instead of set_session_vars(platform="desktop").

The renderer routed manage_connections to the card only under isOnboardingEnabled(),
the HERMES_GUEST_ONBOARDING launch flag, in message-parts.tsx and the run splitter in
fallback.tsx. tool-render-class.ts had already dropped that gate in this PR; the two
routers had not. Both now route on the tool name alone.

ConnectorTool resolved the session owner by the runtime id. Owner routes, hints and
session rows are keyed by the stored id, so in registry topology the owner never
resolved and the card rendered null while the tool blocked. It now resolves by the
stored id, matching the PR1.5 card and every other owner lookup.

message-parts-connectors.test.tsx mounts the real Fallback router with the onboarding
flag off and distinct runtime/stored ids; red before each renderer fix, green after.

* style(connectors): shorter comments, no module mock in the card router test

The router test mocked isOnboardingEnabled to false; jsdom has no preload bridge, so the
real function already returns false. Comments that restated the code are cut to one line.

anti-slop: no net-new findings (25 touched files)

* fix(connectors): Connect on a waiting row opens the stored link

ConnectorCard derived the button's loading state from the phase label, so a managed row that
read "Finish connecting in your browser" (every row, since links are minted up front) had a
disabled Connect button. Nothing on the desktop could open the sign-in link; every managed
connect ended skipped, not_connected, or at the deadline.

The card now takes `busy` for "the action itself is running" and keeps `phase` as a label.
The MCP card passes its in-flight flag; the connector card passes the re-mint wait. Red before:
the Connect button on an initiated row rendered disabled and a click opened nothing.

* fix(connectors): a settled card stays dead; the card binds to its tool call only

A second connect for the same apps revived the finished card on the old tool row. The
connection.request payload carried no id, so the renderer fell back to matching rows by
connector names, and any row with those names qualified, settled or not.

The operation now records the model's tool_call_id and sends it in connection.request and in
the resume snapshot. The card binds to the tool row with that id and to nothing else; the
name-match fallback is deleted. A payload without the id is rejected by the store.

`reason` is removed from the tool: it was the only text the card ever showed from the model
and its absence forked a second tool part, since `reason` doubled as the row-correlation key
in tool-parts.ts. The card never needed it.

`connection.expire` is deleted from the contract and from _EXPIRING_REQUESTS: the card is
raised with _emit, not _block, so nothing has emitted it since the operation lifecycle landed.

Sid's rule of record: a resolved card is fully dead; no path brings it back.

* fix(connectors): the watch loop settles once, on time, and never raises into the result

Three findings from the live review, one loop.

Continue racing a finished sign-in: the loop ran the gateway read, then settled. A read that
returned `connected` for an already-settled or failed target raised IllegalTransition out of
the tool and the model got a generic error instead of the per-app outcomes. The read now skips
targets that are not live (pending, initiated) and skips a settled operation; the loop checks
`settled` after every read.

Settle reason as row text: `settle()` wrote `continue`/`deadline` into each unresolved target's
`detail`, and the card printed it in red. The reason stays on the operation only.

Stop and the deadline waited for the next tick: `/stop` sets a per-thread flag with no wake
hook, so the sleep is sliced at 250 ms and the flag and clock are read each slice. The clock is
also checked before each read, not only after.

Tests: a failed mint that later reads connected settles cleanly; Continue during a read keeps
the settled result; no reason in detail; an interrupt settles within the same second.

* fix(connectors): MCP setup off the desktop returns unavailable instead of blocking

run_mcp_operation treated a non-None connection_callback as "a card exists". Every tui_gateway
session has that callback, the Ink TUI included, so an MCP install from the terminal UI blocked
until the 300 s deadline while the docs promised `unavailable` with the terminal commands.

The MCP path now reads the session surface the same way the managed path does; the callback is
never the predicate. Test binds the surface to `tui` with the callback attached.

* fix(connectors): a failed Try again shows the failure, not the old dead link

The panel's re-mint ignored the gateway's per-app status and moved the row to `initiated` with
whatever link came back, `None` included, so a mint that failed again rendered as waiting on the
link that had already died.

One reader of a mint response now serves both the first mint and Try again
(`managed.mint`, with the actor as a parameter). A repeated failure keeps the row `failed`,
drops the link, and carries the vendor's new text through `operation.refresh`, which emits a
frame without a state change so the card redraws.

* fix(connectors): a forced reconnect waits for the new sign-in before it reports connected

`reconnect` with `force: true` is the account switch. The vendor keeps the old account active
while the new link waits, so the first list read after the mint said `connected` and the
operation settled at once: the new link was dropped and the model was told the switch was done.

A forced target is marked awaiting_new_attempt after the mint. The watcher ignores its row until
the list shows the new attempt (`connectionStatus: initiated`) once, then trusts `connected`.

* fix(connectors): the operation registers under the gateway session key

The tool registered the operation under the agent's session_id; every RPC (connection.respond,
connectors.operation.status, the panel's connectors.connect) and the update emitter looked it up
by the gateway's session key. Those agree until compaction rotates the agent id mid-turn; then
the card's clicks find nothing, no update reaches it, and the tool waits out the deadline.

The registration key is now the bound HERMES_SESSION_KEY, with the agent id as the fallback for
callers with no gateway (unit tests, a bare CLI). The E2E passes a rotated agent id and drives
the card by the gateway key.

* fix(connectors): the forced-reconnect gate reads any non-active row; a failed re-mint of an expired row is failed

Three follow-ups from the verification of the fix pass.

The awaiting_new_attempt gate cleared only on the literal `connectionStatus: initiated`. The
field is optional on the wire and `initializing`, `failed`, `expired` are valid values, so a
forced reconnect could wait the full 300 s and swallow a failed new attempt. The gate now holds
only while the row still reads as the old account (`connected` or `active`) and releases on
anything else.

Try again on an `expired` row whose re-mint fails raised IllegalTransition (no expired → failed
edge). The re-mint steps through `initiated` as the user's attempt, then `failed`, then drops the
dead link.

`detail` never carries a state name any more: `failed` as detail rendered as the row label and
made agent/display.py tag the settled result as a tool error. Only vendor text goes there.

`connection.expire` removed from the renderer's unscoped-stream set; nothing emits it.

Siddharth Balyan e0ef0eb9c3 manage_connections covers local MCP servers; setup_mcp leaves the schema (NS-867, PR1) (#109517)
* feat(connections): manage_connections covers local MCP servers; setup_mcp leaves the schema

One model tool now connects the user to apps of both kinds. A target
`{"name": "linear", "mcp": true}` is a locally configured MCP server;
`install` / `enable` / `authorize` are its verbs. Bare strings and
`{"name": ...}` stay managed connectors and that leg is unchanged.

MCP targets run through one backend-owned connection operation
(tools/connections_tool_operation.py): created with a server-side
deadline from the new config key `connections.wait_timeout_seconds`
(default 120, floor 5, no ceiling), per-target state, and exactly-once
settlement (all resolved / Continue / deadline / interrupt). Unresolved
targets freeze as `not_connected` with the settle reason.

Why the fold works now: the approval card is reached through
`agent.connection_callback` via the agent-level inline executor table,
which is the only path that carries a GUI callback. Registry dispatch
(every non-GUI surface) settles MCP targets as `unavailable` with the
`hermes mcp install / login` hint; managed targets in the same call
are unaffected.

`setup_mcp` is removed from every advertised toolset and from the
deferral list; an inline-table shim keeps calls from conversations
opened before this change dispatching (prompt-cache protection).
`_LEGACY_TOOL_ALIASES` is not the mechanism: inline tools bypass it.

Gateway: `mcp.setup.request/respond` are replaced by
`connection.request/respond/expire` (no wire compat; desktop ships
with this). The bridge waits exactly the operation's deadline. The
`session.resume` snapshot gains `pending_connection` so a reopened
window restores the card with the original deadline.

`manage_connections` joins `_SEQUENTIAL_DEADLINE_EXEMPT_TOOLS`: the
operation owns its wait; the 420s guard must not report `tool_timeout`
while the card is live.

The portal `check_fn` on the tool is dropped in favour of a
handler-level gate on the managed leg, so signed-out sessions can still
approve local MCPs.

* wip(desktop): connection.request store, resume restore, card routing for MCP targets

Renderer half of the setup_mcp fold, first slice: connection-request store
(mirrors clarify), connection.request/expire handling, pending_connection
resume restore, mcpTargets() + isCardTool(name, args) so MCP-target
manage_connections calls classify as cards. Not yet: the card component
rewrite (mcp-setup-tool.tsx), mcp-directory.ts removal, vitest, docs.
Does not typecheck until the card rewrite lands.

* fix(config): hermes update turns on the connections toolset for saved toolset lists

`hermes tools` writes an explicit `platform_toolsets.<platform>` list, and the
resolver reads absence from that list as "unchecked". The `connections`
toolset (#106842) shipped after most users last saved, so `manage_connections`
is stripped from the schema on every install that ever opened the picker.
The Nous entitlement gate never runs; the agent reports the tool as missing.

Migration 44 -> 45 (renumbered when folded into #109517; main was already at 44) appends `connections` to each explicit per-platform list
that lacks it and records the offer in `known_builtin_toolsets` where that
record exists, so a later uncheck reads as a decline. It skips: platforms
whose record already holds `connections` (the user saw the checkbox and left
it off), bare composite lists ([hermes-cli]) that already inherit it, platforms
where the toolset is not allowed, and any config whose `agent.disabled_toolsets`
names `connections` (Blank Slate, `hermes tools --disable`), because the
resolver subtracts that list last and the enable would never take effect.
The explicit-list test is the resolver's own: any configurable or plugin key.

`hermes update` runs migrations post-pull for the active profile and every
sibling, so one update is enough. Fresh installs and composite users were
never affected.

* refactor: anti-slop pass on the desktop slice; shorten added comments

Parse connection.request at the boundary with a typed wire interface instead of
unknown + typeof; mcpTargets reuses connectorText; comments cut to one or two
lines. slop-ratchet: no net-new findings in 13 touched files.

* feat(desktop): the MCP approval card answers manage_connections; MCP Directory removed

The existing card (mcp-setup-tool.tsx) now reads the connection-request store,
renders for manage_connections calls with mcp:true targets, answers through
connection.respond with a per-target outcome, and no longer calls reload.mcp
after Install; the new server's tools arrive on the between-turns refresh.
A settled operation renders the first target's frozen state.

session.resume restores a pending card with its original deadline on both the
activate and cold-resume paths.

lib/mcp-directory.ts is deleted along with its two fallback branches
(suggestion provider, card install). The catalog was already primary in both;
a catalog miss now yields no suggestion / a notInCatalog error. The GitHub
never-suggest test is rewritten on catalog-shaped data.

vitest: connection-request store (6), suggestion provider, clarify restore.
slop-ratchet: no net-new findings in 19 touched files.

* chore: drop __pycache__ files swept in by an over-broad git add

* fix(desktop): correlate the connection.request row with the model's tool call by reason

The synthetic row from connection.request and the tool.start row carried
different ids and no shared match value (op_id is not in the model's args),
so the card mounted twice. reason is the arg both sides carry.

* docs: manage_connections covers local MCP servers; connections.wait_timeout_seconds

* fix(connections): settle reason derives from target state, never from the renderer

A card that answers one of two targets and claims all_resolved must settle as
continue with the other target not_connected; found live with a two-target call.

* fix(desktop): a pending connection card re-arms on resume and activate

The store entry was restored but the transcript row was not, so navigating
away and back (or reloading) lost the card while the backend kept waiting.
restorePendingClarifyToolCall's core is generalized to any blocking tool
name and both resume paths project the connection row through it.
Verified live: card restored after navigate-away and after a full renderer
reload, deadline_at unchanged, approve settles connected.

* style: literal wording in added comments, docstrings and docs

* fix: shared gateway-event contract and config-schema category for the connection events

connection.request/expire replace mcp.setup.* in apps/shared gateway-events
(json list, BACKEND_EVENT_NAMES, GatewayEventMap) so the renderer's event
union includes them and the tui_gateway contract test passes. The new
`connections` config section folds into the agent tab like the other
single-field sections.

* style: import order (perfectionist) in the desktop and shared files this PR touches

* chore: retrigger CI (zero-job dispatch failure, auto-heal)

ethernet 14efb46089 fix(desktop): skip the film, keep the guided onboarding
HERMES_SKIP_INTRO=1 turned off the intro film but also silently killed the
entire guided first launch: the guide can only queue on the film's
completion edge (queueGuideAfterIntro requires hasSeenIntroReveal), so with
the film disabled nothing ever fired and the app booted straight into the
normal shell with the free-tier flag on.

The film-to-guide seam now fires without the film: beginOnboardingFlowWithout
Intro records the film as watched and queues the guide directly, so
HERMES_SKIP_INTRO skips exactly the film. A relaunch adopts the persisted
guide (loadGate sees cinematic + seen), and a later launch without the flag
cannot replay the film over the completed flow.

Verified: tsc -p tsconfig.json and tsconfig.electron.json clean; vitest ui
(onboarding-gate, onboarding, onboarding-never-forces-sign-in: 30 passed
incl. 2 new invariant tests) and electron (guest-onboarding-flag,
preload-flags: 6 passed) green.

teknium1 85b93771d2 fix(desktop): a stopped clarify no longer swallows the next turn's question
After #108525 the turn-settle seal stopped writing `result: {}` onto abandoned
tool calls and left them result-less with `completedAt`. Two clarify consumers
still keyed "pending" on `result === undefined` alone:

- `findPendingClarifyLocation` adopted the sealed call as the "sole open
  clarify" fallback for an uncorrelated request, so a new clarify raised after
  the user stopped an earlier one re-armed the OLD row (`streamId` = old turn)
  and the new question never got a card.
- `ClarifyTool` reads the session's live clarify request, so once the new
  request arrived the sealed row painted the NEW question too: two live cards
  for one question, the stopped one with no request id behind it.

Sealed calls now only re-arm on a genuine correlation (request id / question
match, which is the resume case; the seal comes off so the row renders live)
and never as the uncorrelated fallback; in the timeline a settled-without-result
clarify renders as the generic history row, as every other tool already does.

Live Desktop A/B (real Electron, loopback provider, stop Q1 then ask for Q2):
before 2 live clarify cards both showing Q2; after 1 live card (Q2), Q1 shown
as "Result unavailable", answer reaches the provider.

teknium1 f6306d1920 feat(contracts): TypeScript consumes the generated contract; hand-typed wire shapes deleted
apps/shared/src/gateway-events.ts is now a thin layer over
gateway-contract.generated.ts (client-local synthetic events + the
GatewayEvent envelope); gateway-events.json, its two rendezvous tests and
the duplicated BillingBlock / SessionInfo / ProjectInfo hand copies are
gone. Desktop, TUI, web and shared typecheck against the generated
RpcMethods / ServerRequestMap / BackendGatewayEventMap.

What tsc found once the types were honest: three phantom fields the
backend never sent (tool.start.todos, error.reason,
voice.transcript.voice_stopped) - the TUI todo tests were driving the
list through the phantom and are retargeted to tool.complete, where the
wire actually carries it; nullable fields (`None` on the wire) were typed
as plain optionals in eight places and now coerce at the boundary;
SessionResumeResult had a stale generic.

Contract fixes from the consumer pass: TranscriptMessage is the gateway
projection (text/row_id/context/args), not the stored row; SkinPayload
matches HermesSkin (empty-string defaults, never null); SessionLiveInfo
model/tools/skills are required (always emitted); BillingBlock.billing_url
is required-nullable (dataclass asdict).

tui_gateway/AGENTS.md documents the declare -> regenerate -> tsc loop.

teknium1 d9834a3e86 test: port desktop, TUI and gateway suites to server→client request frames
The old suites asserted the deleted wire (`*.request` events, `*.respond`
RPCs, `pending_clarify` snapshots, `_pending`/`_answers` teardowns). Each
test keeps its invariant against the new shape: a seeded live request's
`respond` spy receives the answer object, `hasOpenServerRequest` flips, the
`approval.respond` RPC fallback is asserted ONLY for queue entries restored
without a socket, and Bot Mode rooms answer via `request.answer` /
`clarify.lock`. The group-turns test that polled forever for a
`clarify.respond` that no longer exists (20-minute hang) now completes.

teknium1 9f7f2f28c0 feat(gateway): server→client JSON-RPC requests replace the *.request/*.respond event pairs (#110521)
The gateway asked the user questions (approval, clarify, sudo, secret,
vault, MCP setup, the desktop read/act bridges) by emitting a
`<x>.request` EVENT carrying a hand-minted request_id, blocking the
agent thread on a module dict keyed by that id, and exposing a paired
`<x>.respond` METHOD per kind — thirteen pairs, four registries
(`_pending`, `_answers`, `_batch_clarify`, `_EXPIRING_REQUESTS`) and a
per-kind reconnect snapshot (`pending_clarify` / `pending_approval`)
that only two of the thirteen kinds ever got. JSON-RPC already has the
primitive: the server sends a request frame with an id and the client
answers with a response frame bearing the same id.

`tui_gateway/server_requests.py` owns the one mechanism:

  send() block the agent thread until the response frame
                  (`srq-<n>` ids; ints belong to the client)
  send_async()    fire-and-callback variant (bot relay)
  cancel*() withdraw with ONE `request.cancel {id, method, reason}`
                  event (timeout / interrupt / process exit /
                  answered elsewhere) instead of per-kind *.expire
  open_requests() the still-open frames, replayed by session.resume,
                  session.activate and session.events.since so a
                  reconnecting client re-renders every kind, not two
  clarify.lock stays a real client→server RPC (locks one batch
                  answer early); locked answers merge into the final
                  set even when the closing response carries only the
                  tail the user answered last

A client that does not implement a method answers -32601 and the agent
fails fast (the old fixed-timeout "unavailable" probes for tour/preview
still work — a wire error IS an answer). Approval: the queue entry's
settle hook withdraws the request when `/approve` from another surface,
a timeout or an interrupt resolves it first, so no window keeps a dead
card. Compute-host children own their waits; the parent mirrors their
open frames for replay and relays `clarify.lock` + response frames.

Clients: `JsonRpcRequestChannel` gains `onRequest` (unhandled → -32601,
dedup by id) and `JsonRpcGatewayClient` re-delivers `open_requests`
from the replay result. Desktop gets `gateway-event/server-requests.ts`
(one handler per method, replacing the request branches of
`input-requests.ts` / `desktop-bridge.ts`) and a `store/server-requests`
registry so every answer site calls `respondToServerRequest(id, result)`
synchronously; the TUI gets `createServerRequestHandler.ts` +
`serverRequestStore.ts`. `gateway-events.json` now pins both halves
(events + server request methods); the two contract tests check both.

Live (real stdio gateway, real `clarify_callback` on the agent thread):
before, `clarify.request` event + `clarify.respond` RPC, batch final
answers lost ('' returned); after, `{"id":"srq-…","method":"clarify"}`
frame, `session.events.since.open_requests` replays it, response frame
`{"answer":"yes"}` reaches the agent, batch lock + final response
merge to `{"q0":"1","q1":"free text"}`.

teknium1 ebe8cda8ea feat(tui_gateway): real JSON-RPC server→client requests replace the *.request / *.respond notification pair
The backend never sent a JSON-RPC request; when it needed an answer from the
renderer it hand-correlated a `*.request` notification with a later `*.respond`
method through four module-level dicts, a timeout thread and 13 derived
`*.expire` names, plus a separate reconnect snapshot per prompt kind. That is a
second request/response layer built on a protocol that already has one.

`tui_gateway/server_requests.py` sends `{id: "srq-…", method, params}` and
blocks on the response frame with that id (string ids never collide with the
clients' integer ids). One `request.cancel {id, method, reason}` notification
withdraws a request on timeout / interrupt / session close. `open_requests` on
`session.resume` / `session.activate` / `session.events.since` re-delivers
unanswered requests after a reconnect; the shared TypeScript channel does that
itself before the caller sees the result. Batch clarify keeps its per-question
locks as a normal `clarify.lock` RPC (the last lock resolves the request).
Approvals stay queue-backed (`tools.approval` owns the timeout, `/approve all`,
coalescing): the request resolves the queue entry and the entry's own
resolution withdraws the request through `register_gateway_settle`.

Deleted: `_block`, `_respond`, `_pending`, `_answers`,
`_pending_prompt_payloads`, `_batch_clarify`, `_EXPIRING_REQUESTS`, the
`*.respond` methods, every `*.request` / `*.expire` event, `pending_clarify`.
Compute-host (turn isolation) mirrors the child's open request and relays the
response frame / lock to it. Desktop, TUI and shared clients register
`onRequest` handlers where they used to switch on `*.request` events; answers
are response frames over the socket the request arrived on, so #91684's
owner-routing class cannot recur for prompts.

yoniebans 3b733a7c8a fix(desktop): keep envelope errors and sealed calls settled outside the tool row
Three consumers still read `result === undefined` as an open call or an error without text after the result and display-hint split.

The tool row lost the event's error explanation when the result carried none: `toolErrorText` now reads `toolResultMetadata.error` / `.message` when `isError` is set, and `toolStatus` runs the error path for sealed error rows so an envelope-only read miss stays on the notice tier. The turn-activity signature and wait narration count a sealed call as settled. Onboarding's start-with-connections offer withdraws once a connection wait is sealed.

Four tests fail on 235ec0f and pass here.

yoniebans a74953f0f6 fix(desktop): route sealed tool parts without a result to the generic row
The delegate list, image card and delivery notice read pending-ness from `result === undefined`. A call sealed by a stopped turn or a lost completion event now carries `completedAt` and no result, so those parts kept rendering as running: a delegate row never left Running, image_generate showed a permanent Rendering image placeholder, and a delivery call showed a pending notice. Route that state to ToolFallback, which already renders it as Result unavailable.

Three component tests drive the real Thread render for each part; all three fail on the previous head.

teknium1 09b74dea64 fix(desktop): one IME-aware Enter helper for plugins too; guard the sites main added since
- The Kanban plugin cannot import `@/lib/ime` (plugin fence), so its
  `./ime-enter` twin duplicated the predicate. Export `isSubmitEnter` from
  `@hermes/plugin-sdk` and drop the twin so one helper owns the policy.
- `BoardNameField` in kanban/board-switcher.tsx (main's refactor of the
  create/rename board dialogs) submitted on composition Enter; guarded.
- Telegram allowed-ID input and the clarify-card textarea submitted on the
  post-compositionend keyCode-229 Enter; both now use `isSubmitEnter`.

Teknium 5cbd994575 Port from cloudflare/cloudflare-os#291: IME-aware Enter guards across every desktop text field
Widens the salvaged Kanban fix (PR #94611 by @huklaa) to the whole bug
class, following cloudflare-os PR #291 which centralized one
isImeComposing predicate and swept every Enter-submit site.

- New shared helper src/lib/ime.ts (isImeComposing / isSubmitEnter):
  handles nativeEvent.isComposing (React), event.isComposing (DOM), and
  the legacy Chromium/Safari keyCode 229 commit-Enter that arrives after
  compositionend.
- Sweeps 21 previously unguarded Enter-submit sites: dialogs (project,
  worktree, profile-remote-override, pet rename), settings fields
  (credential keys, model API key, quick-entry shortcut, attachment
  size, combobox), quick entry, pet overlay composer, pet generate +
  hatch, review ship bar, file rename, preview browser address bar,
  model catalog menu, MCP setup + approval strips, Kanban drawer.
- Upgrades two partial guards (onboarding, session-actions-menu) that
  checked isComposing but missed keyCode 229.
- find-in-page: Enter step no longer fires mid-composition (typed CJK
  search queries jumped the viewport on every conversion commit).

Validation: tsc clean, eslint clean, 135 tests green across ime/find-bar/
composer/kanban suites; sabotage run (guard removed) fails the new test.

teknium1 68eb059863 feat(desktop): daily re-auth nudge for MCP servers with a Disable action
An MCP server whose OAuth refresh token died used to get one warning toast
per app session (on the transition into needs-auth) and then nothing: the
server sat parked, silently, until the user happened to open Capabilities →
MCP. A dead token is a standing problem that needs an action, so the health
checker now re-nudges once a day while the server stays broken (persisted
24h snooze per profile+server, same pattern as the update/skew toasts) and
the toast offers the second way out: Disable, which writes enabled: false
through PUT /api/mcp/servers/{name}/enabled. The gateway's config reconcile
(#109906) and the serve backend's reload both follow that edit.

Toasts gain an optional secondaryAction (outline button beside the primary).

teknium1 3f02259518 fix(shared): fuzzyRank folds [-_.] to space on both sides like the desktop picker did
The desktop model picker moved from foldIncludes (searchFold: lower-case +
`[-_.]` → space on text AND query) to the shared fuzzyRank, which only
lower-cased. `gpt.4o`, `claude_3` and `qwen3-8` returned zero rows where
main listed gpt-4o / claude-3-opus / qwen3.8-flash, while HighlightMatches
still folded — filter and highlight disagreed. fuzzyScore now folds both
sides with a length-preserving fold, so positions still index the original
target and all three surfaces rank a separator variant identically.

Tests: three separator rows in fuzzy.test.ts and in the desktop picker
test. Sabotage (lower-case only): all six fail.

teknium1 a3d259019b refactor(ts): one stripAnsi in @hermes/shared (TUI's OSC/DCS/partial-CSI coverage); desktop adopts it
Three TS surfaces each carried their own ANSI stripper with different
coverage. The TUI's (OSC, DCS/SOS/PM/APC strings, complete and truncated
CSI, multi-byte non-CSI ESC sequences, stray ESC, C0 controls) is now the
single implementation at apps/shared/src/ansi.ts, exported from the root
index and the new `@hermes/shared/ansi` subpath (ui-tui has no DOM lib, so
it imports the subpath like it does for billing/skin).

Sites (path::symbol → canonical):
  ui-tui/src/lib/text.ts::stripAnsi, sanitizeAnsiForRender, hasAnsi
      → moved to apps/shared/src/ansi.ts (text.ts now imports stripAnsi
        from '@hermes/shared/ansi' for its own trail helpers)
  ui-tui: 13 importers repointed from '../lib/text.js' to
      '@hermes/shared/ansi' (createGatewayEventHandler.ts,
      components/messageLine.tsx, 11 __tests__ files)
  apps/desktop/src/lib/ansi.ts::stripAnsi (2 regexes) → deleted;
      parseAnsi/ansiColorClass/hasAnsiCodes stay (styled-segment parser)
  apps/desktop/src/app/session/hooks/use-prompt-actions/index.ts
      → imports stripAnsi from '@hermes/shared/ansi'
  apps/desktop/src/components/assistant-ui/tool/fallback-model/index.ts
      private SGR-only stripAnsi → deleted; imports the shared one

Tests: the TUI 'ANSI sanitizers' cases move from
ui-tui/src/__tests__/text.test.ts to apps/shared/src/ansi.test.ts, plus
one invariant: an OSC-8 hyperlink + DCS string + SGR + partial CSI tail
strips to exactly the visible text with no ESC/BEL left.

Behavior change: desktop chat system messages (use-prompt-actions) and
inline-diff chrome (stripInlineDiffChrome) now also lose OSC hyperlink
payloads, DCS strings, truncated CSI tails and C0 control bytes that the
weaker regexes let through. TUI behavior is unchanged.

teknium1 172b2a722b refactor(ts): one compactNumber and one reasoning-effort value set in @hermes/shared
Three hand-rolled compact-number formatters and two mirrored copies of the
reasoning-effort value set collapse into apps/shared/src/format.ts and
apps/shared/src/reasoning-effort.ts, exported from the package root and as
the subpaths `@hermes/shared/format` / `@hermes/shared/reasoning-effort`
(the TUI compiles with lib ES2023 and imports subpaths only). Surfaces keep
their own label maps and UI helpers. No re-export shims remain.

Convention for compactNumber (desktop's implementation, moved verbatim):
lowercase 'k', uppercase 'M', promotion-guarded thresholds (>= 999.5 -> k,
>= 999_950 -> M) so rounding can never print "1000k", trailing ".0"
stripped, non-finite / <= 0 -> "0".

Sites (path::symbol -> canonical):

  apps/desktop/src/lib/format.ts::compactNumber          -> apps/shared/src/format.ts::compactNumber (moved; file deleted)
  web/src/lib/format.ts::formatTokenCount                -> deleted
  ui-tui/src/lib/text.ts::fmtK -> deleted (text.ts's own callers use compactNumber)
  apps/desktop/src/app/agents/index.tsx                  -> @hermes/shared
  apps/desktop/src/app/chat/sidebar/chrome.tsx           -> @hermes/shared
  apps/desktop/src/app/chat/sidebar/session-row.tsx      -> @hermes/shared

  apps/desktop/src/components/ui/tab-dropdown.tsx        -> @hermes/shared
  apps/desktop/src/lib/statusbar.tsx                     -> @hermes/shared
  apps/desktop/src/sdk/index.ts::compactNumber           -> re-exported from @hermes/shared (plugin SDK surface unchanged)

  web/src/lib/reasoning-effort.ts::VALID_EFFORTS         -> Set(REASONING_EFFORT_VALUES); normalizeEffort falls back to DEFAULT_REASONING_EFFORT

Semantics kept: web `none` is selectable; desktop `none` resolves to ''
(thinking off); desktop isReasoningEffort still trims + lowercases.

Behavior change:
  - web: token counts on the Models page and ModelInfoCard now print a
    lowercase 'k' and are promotion-guarded: 128_000 "128K" -> "128k",
    999_999 "1000.0K" -> "1M", 1_500 "1.5K" -> "1.5k". 'M' is unchanged.
  - TUI: fmtK used Intl compact notation; compactNumber differs only in
    suffix case and the guard: 1_000_000 "1m" -> "1M", and billions no
    longer get a 'b' suffix (1_000_000_000 "1b" -> "1000M"). Sub-million
    values are identical ("999", "1k", "1.5k"). Non-positive values now
    print "0" instead of "-1k".
  - desktop: none (its formatter moved verbatim).

Tests: apps/shared/src/format.test.ts::"compactNumber" (table incl.
999_999 -> "1M", 999_949 -> "999.9k"; fails when the promotion guard is
removed) and apps/shared/src/reasoning-effort.test.ts::"reasoning-effort"
(no duplicate values, `none` is the only non-level, default is a member;
fails on a duplicated level or a `none`-accepting isReasoningEffort).

teknium1 a2ae8f229d refactor(ts): one fuzzy + model-search-text helper in @hermes/shared; desktop picker ranks with fuzzyRank
Three byte-identical (modulo prettier and a "keep in sync" header comment)
copies of model-search-text.ts and two of fuzzy.ts collapse into one copy
each under apps/shared/src, exported from the package root and as the
subpaths `@hermes/shared/fuzzy` / `@hermes/shared/model-search-text` (the
TUI compiles with lib ES2023 and imports subpaths, never the DOM-typed
root). The vitest suites move with the code; no re-export shims remain.

Sites (path::symbol -> canonical):

  ui-tui/src/lib/fuzzy.ts::fuzzyScore/fuzzyScoreMulti/fuzzyRank   -> apps/shared/src/fuzzy.ts (moved)
  web/src/lib/fuzzy.ts::fuzzyScore/fuzzyScoreMulti/fuzzyRank      -> deleted

  apps/desktop/src/lib/model-search-text.ts::modelSearchText      -> deleted
  ui-tui/src/lib/fuzzy.test.ts                                    -> apps/shared/src/fuzzy.test.ts (moved)
  ui-tui/src/lib/model-search-text.test.ts                        -> apps/shared/src/model-search-text.test.ts (moved)
  ui-tui/src/components/modelPicker.tsx::fuzzyRank, modelSearchText     -> @hermes/shared/fuzzy, @hermes/shared/model-search-text
  web/src/components/ModelPickerDialog.tsx::fuzzyRank, modelSearchText  -> @hermes/shared
  web/src/lib/model-picker-filter.ts::fuzzyScoreMulti                   -> @hermes/shared
  apps/desktop/src/components/model-picker.tsx::modelSearchText         -> @hermes/shared (+ fuzzyRank, see below)

The header comment now names only the cross-language twin
(hermes_cli/model_search.py) as the thing to keep in sync.

Behavior change (desktop only): the desktop model picker used to filter
model rows with `foldIncludes` substring matching and keep the curated
order; it now ranks them with the same `fuzzyRank(models, query,
modelSearchText)` the web and TUI pickers use. What a user sees
differently while typing a query:

  - subsequence queries match: "g4o" now finds "gpt-4o" (previously only
    a literal substring such as "gpt-4" or "4o" matched);
  - the best match floats to the top instead of rows staying in curated
    order (exact > prefix > word-boundary > contiguous > scattered);
  - a query that matches the provider name/slug still shows that
    provider's full curated list in order, exactly as before;
  - an empty query still shows the curated list verbatim.

The in-row highlight is unchanged (substring emphasis via HighlightMatches),
so a fuzzy-only hit renders without emphasis rather than mis-highlighting.

Tests: apps/desktop/src/components/model-picker.test.tsx::"orders model
rows exactly as the shared fuzzyRank does" asserts the rendered row order
equals the shared fuzzyRank order for the same inputs (fails on both the
old substring filter and a reversed ranking).

teknium1 36773e0d78 refactor(ts): one GatewayEventMap in apps/shared typed from tui_gateway emitters; drop never-emitted tool.progress
Three TypeScript clients each declared their own copy of the tui_gateway wire
types and had drifted apart: apps/shared had a partial GatewayEventName union
with a `(string & {})` escape hatch, ui-tui/gatewayTypes.ts a 150-line
discriminated union, and apps/desktop an `RpcEvent<T>` that was field-for-field
the shared GatewayEvent with `type: string`. None matched the emitter:
message.complete lacked warning/status/error/recoverable/error_surface,
tool.start/tool.complete lacked args/result, SessionResumeResponse lacked
session_key/messages_omitted/hydrating/auto_continue/todo_state, three
different ModelOptionProvider shapes disagreed on fields, and all three unions
handled a `tool.progress` event that no Python emitter has ever produced.

Now:

* `apps/shared/src/gateway-events.ts` is the single home: payload interfaces
  typed from the Python emitters (file::symbol cited per interface),
  `BackendGatewayEventMap` (89 backend names) + `ClientLocalGatewayEventMap`
  (5 TUI-synthetic transport events, clearly marked, excluded from the
  contract) merged into `GatewayEventMap`; `GatewayEvent<K>` is discriminated
  on `type` with `seq` typed. RPC shapes shared by 2+ surfaces live beside it
  (ModelOptionProvider = union of every field hermes_cli/inventory.py sets,
  incl. pricing_pending/free_tier_pending; SessionResumeResponse<Info>;
  SessionListItem with resolved_id; Usage).
* `JsonRpcGatewayClient.on<K>` is keyed by event name; the gateway.ready
  heartbeat/replay_epoch and per-frame `seq` reads are typed instead of cast.
* ui-tui and apps/desktop import the shared names; their local duplicates are
  deleted (no re-export shims — importers are repointed; the desktop plugin
  SDK barrel keeps its public `RpcEvent` name as an alias of GatewayEvent).
  web/src repoints ModelOptionProvider/ModelOptionsResponse.
* `tool.progress` handling is removed from the TUI handler/turnController,
  desktop event sets/tools handler, shared union, tests, and two docs
  (`grep '"tool.progress"' tui_gateway/` = 0 hits; the `display.tool_progress`
  config mode is unrelated and untouched).
* `message.complete.warning` (history-commit note from
  prompt_turn.py::_complete_turn_payload) is typed and surfaced on both
  surfaces through their existing notice paths (TUI pushActivity 'warn',
  desktop notify kind 'warning').

Contract: `apps/shared/src/gateway-events.json` is the sorted list of
backend-emitted names. `tests/tui_gateway/test_gateway_event_contract.py`
collects names from the Python emitter side (emit-helper literals, the
`.request → .expire` table, change-watcher table, child delta mirror,
subagent relay, desktop_ui tool emitters, gateway.ready/setup.ready/
browser-controller frames) and asserts emitted == JSON in both directions.
`apps/shared/src/gateway-events.test.ts` asserts BACKEND_EVENT_NAMES (which
the map type is `satisfies`-checked against) == JSON. Sabotage-verified: a
fake JSON name fails both tests; a fake TS name fails tsc + vitest; a fake
Python `_emit("...")` fails pytest.

Teknium d46f79233e fix: sort imports in markdown-text.tsx per perfectionist rule 2026-09-12 21:17:02 -07:00
Teknium e1c05ffa32 feat(desktop): persist video playback speed across transcript videos
Port from block/buzz#7336: a playback rate picked in any transcript
video's native controls persists as a device-level preference, so a
viewer who watches at 2x doesn't re-select it for every clip. New
players (and other open windows, via the persistentAtom storage sync)
start at the saved rate; out-of-range or malformed stored values fall
back to 1x, and returning to 1x removes the stored key.

Adapted from Buzz's hand-rolled localStorage module + custom player to
our persistentAtom store and the single <video> render site in
markdown-text.tsx (MediaAttachment), wrapped as TranscriptVideo.

Siddharth Balyan cbe9e5b294 chore(desktop): literal comments across the onboarding flow (#108438)
* chore(desktop): literal comments in the guide script and runbooks

Comment-only change to onboarding-script.ts and setup-profile.ts. The module
headers now state the purpose and the constraints that shaped each file. The
notes beside the runbook strings keep one fact per sentence, or are deleted
when the string beside them says the same thing. The runbook text, the
persona, the option pills and the SOUL text are unchanged.

Both versions transpile to identical output with comments removed.

* chore(desktop): literal comments in the guide chat cards and stores

Comment-only change to the guided chat's cards, directive dispatcher, option
catalog, assembly module and chip. Metaphor and personification are replaced
by the name of the atom, effect or CSS property they stood for. Comments that
restate the code are deleted. Two stale facts are corrected in place: the
mini layout trees point at app/contrib/layout-presets.ts, and the skip button
sets the onboarding phase to skipped rather than done.

One comment line in cards/frame.tsx from bb/connector-ui-e2e-v2 loses a
metaphor and an em dash; its fact is unchanged.

* chore(desktop): literal comments in the handoff and first build

Comment-only change to the handoff wiring, the kickoff, the receipt store,
the first-build check-ins, the handoff tour, the connector rows and the
machine profile store. Every kept comment names the caller, the constraint or
the defect it prevents. The claim that the tour never throws is removed: the
function can reject and its caller does not catch.

Five comment blocks in connector-tool.tsx written on bb/connector-ui-e2e-v2
lose personification, dramatic capitals and em dashes. Every fact in them
stays, and no block moves.

* chore(desktop): literal comments in the intro reveal

Comment-only change to the intro reveal's clock, timeline, cube renderer,
sound, scenes, store and README. Animation comments now name the actual
ramp, easing or offset with its number. Four comments that contradicted the
code are corrected: the first texture slot opens at 3700 ms, the tear settles
from 1 to 0 over 460 ms, the typing weight delays the character it sits on,
and INTRO_EXIT_MS is wall time in index.tsx but score time in the overlay.

* chore(desktop): literal comments in the Electron onboarding windows

Comment-only change to the window growth geometry and the two onboarding
windows. The 768 px floor keeps its one fact: the floor uses Math.ceil where
the deltas round, because rounding 906.24 DIP down leaves the media query
false. The comment that placed the CSS-pixel to DIP conversion at getBounds
now points at growWindowBounds, where it happens.

* chore(gateway): literal docstrings in the onboarding RPCs and the tour tool

Docstring and comment-only change. The module summaries state what each
module does and where authorization comes from, without contrast pairs. The
tool descriptions the model reads are unchanged. Two words in the tour tool's
module docstring lose personification; the rest of that docstring is as it
was.

ast.dump of both versions, with docstrings stripped, is identical for all
three files.

* chore(desktop): literal punctuation in the relaunch and film-end notes

Comment-only change to four lines that bb/connector-ui-e2e-v2 added to the
boot gate, the gate store and the intro gate. Each em dash becomes a colon, a
full stop or a pair of parentheses; one emphasis capital is lowercased. The
facts in the notes are unchanged.

Siddharth Balyan 474a7f8b2a Guided first launch: the first build connects the picked apps before it starts (NS-859) (#108317)
* feat(desktop): the first build connects the picked apps before it starts

When the user picked apps during setup, the build session's runbook now opens with one batched manage_connections connect for every pick, ends the turn, and waits for the app's "links opened" note before calling wait with a 180 s budget. The task starts the moment the wait returns or the user says to start, with whatever connected; pending apps are named once and skipped, not asked about. The no-account rule stays only for builds with no picks and for machine setup, which needs no account. Account data comes from the connected apps and the web only; credentials that happen to be on the machine are off limits to a first task. The deliverable is a page the user can open plus one real reading or action through a connected app.

The picks are gateway slugs from here on, so the runbook names each one with its title and the model never calls status to match them.

* feat(desktop): the onboarding picker shows only the lead-order apps the gateway carries

The picker reads the live catalog through useConnectorCatalog (#108292) and
offers a pick only when the gateway carries it. This commit narrows what it
shows to CONNECTOR_LEAD_ORDER: the everyday apps, in that order, per D89. The
rest of the catalog stays available to the agent; the first-run card does not
list it. Reverting to the full catalog with search is the one filter clause.

* feat(desktop): mark the first build session at handoff

Persist the build stored id with its created receipt so connection automation stays scoped to that session.

* feat(desktop): open first build connection links as one batch

Claim each tool call before opening its links and send one hidden setup note. Share row state by stored session and retain clickable links when the browser bridge is unavailable.

* feat(desktop): reconcile first build rows during the model wait

Poll the owning gateway while the newest wait is pending and preserve settled or interrupted results. Show connection states without the ordinary offer controls.

* feat(desktop): let the first build start with connected apps

Read the shared connection rows in the composer and submit a visible first-person start message. Persist use of the pill so it cannot return for the same session.

* feat(desktop): add connect first setup copy

Use the connector locale keys for catalog checks, sign-in states, and the start action. Other locales inherit these additions from English.

* feat(desktop): the first build waits 120 s, then asks; signed-in tools are fair

The wait budget drops from 180 to 120 seconds. When it runs out with apps still pending, the model stops and asks in one line whether to continue without them or connect again, instead of deciding alone. Tools already signed in on the machine, such as a logged-in gh, are fair to use for the task when it helps, said in one line; the earlier rule against them goes.

* fix(desktop): an untargeted connector status renders as a tool line, not a card

A manage_connections status call with no connectors list describes the whole catalog. The card rendered that as one Connect row per app the gateway knows, 59 of them, right after the user had connected the one they wanted. Such a part now takes the collapsed tool line like any other tool call, and resolves no owner and polls nothing. A status call that names apps keeps its rows.

* feat(desktop): a three-step tour explains the profile switch at handoff

The one-step signpost becomes a three-step tour when the first build's session is on screen: the profile rail, where the task runs on default and the welcome chat lives on the setup profile; the sessions list, which belongs to the selected profile; the rail again, one click from Hermes. The copy is in the locale files. The app runs it, not the guide: the tour bridge answers only the session the user is looking at, and the guide is a background session by then. Its own note tells it not to describe the tour. The tour no longer skips users who declined the look around, since the tour beat itself is mandatory in the next cut.

* fix(desktop): a rejected hidden submit never lands in the composer draft

A submit with displayKind hidden is machine text, a setup note the user never typed. When the gateway rejected one because the model's turn was still running, the composer restored it into the draft like any rejected message, and the user saw "[setup] links opened for gmail, googlecalendar" sitting in their input box. A rejected hidden submit is now dropped.

* fix(desktop): hold the links-opened note until the build session is idle

The card sent the hidden "[setup] links opened" note the moment it had opened the links, while the model's connect turn was still running; the gateway rejected it. In the live run the model had already called wait in that same turn, so the note had nothing left to say. The card now holds the note as pending on the session's state and delivers it only when the session is idle and the connect is still the newest connector part. When a newer part exists the note is dropped. The runbook says the same from the model's side: call wait right after connect; if it bounces as just minted, end the turn and treat the note as the cue to wait again; a note that arrives after a wait needs no reply.

* fix(desktop): the Start pill says one app, not one apps

* fix(desktop): parse connector dictionaries in wait results

Read connected connector slugs from dictionary and string results, excluding entries explicitly marked disconnected. Use the gateway response shape in the wait fixture so completed connections update their rows.

* fix(desktop): end first-build mode when the handshake settles

Persist a completed connection handshake after a settled wait or an accepted start message. Later connector parts use the ordinary card, and completed sessions cannot auto-open links or send a held setup note.

* fix(desktop): route external submits through busy handling

Steer external visible prompts during a running turn and queue them when steering is unavailable or rejected. Preserve hidden submit dispatch and leave the current draft intact so the start pill can hand delivery to the composer.

* fix(desktop): refresh first-build rows before the wait call

Poll connector status while the newest connect result contains initiated links, using the same watcher as waits. Check the active part before each request so replacing the card retires its earlier poll.

* fix(desktop): bound first-build connector polling

Stop polling after 150 seconds, a start decision, a completed handshake or three consecutive request failures. Ignore in-flight answers after those conditions so an expired watcher cannot overwrite the final rows.

* fix(desktop): preserve connected rows on unavailable status

Keep a confirmed connection when the catalog omits or disables its row or reports itself unavailable. Only unresolved rows become unavailable so a transient catalog answer does not reduce the start count.

* fix(desktop): treat an omitted connector action as status

Apply the gateway default when deciding whether a connector part is an untargeted status check. These catalog answers render as tool lines and do not resolve an owner or start a connection flow.

* fix(desktop): keep catalog checks from retiring live connectors

Exclude untargeted status parts when finding the latest connector action, including omitted actions. The card, poll and start pill now remain attached to the last actionable connector part.

* fix(desktop): connector catalog loading recovers, and disabled toolkits stay out of the picker

useConnectorCatalog (#108292) started in `loading` and returned early when
the session ids were missing, so the connectors card could sit on its
skeleton with Continue disabled and no request in flight. It now starts
`unavailable` until both ids exist, probes when they arrive, and gives the
gateway 15 s before it reports unavailable.

orderConnectorPicks drops rows the gateway marks `enabled: false`: a toolkit
the deployment turned off is not something the build chat can connect.

* fix(desktop): clarify first-build connection instructions

Filter connector picks against the offered apps before building the task runbook. Explain when active connections, early start messages, and skipped apps let the task begin so the model follows the card’s handshake.

* fix(desktop): show handoff steps only for visible panes

Require positive bounds and a visible pane before the handoff tour starts. Keep the two profile rail steps when the sessions list stays hidden so a collapsed sidebar does not suppress the tour.

* style(desktop): prettier on the connect-first files

Format the renderer TypeScript files in the branch comparison with Prettier and clear spacing warnings in the edited connector files. Keep the connection behavior changes in their individual commits so each defect remains reviewable.

* test(desktop): hold the connect-first tests back until the onboarding test pass

The onboarding tests return in one pass after the guide script rewrite (NS-853), not piecemeal in each behaviour PR. The eight files added on this branch are removed here and come back then; they are intact at 980172b9dd for that pass. The one existing test file this branch edits, the composer submit test, keeps its changes because the behaviour it covers changed.

* test(desktop): a busy hidden request steers like a visible one

After the stack onto #108292 the composer has one busy rule for every external request, hidden or visible: steer the live turn, queue when the steer is refused. The test that asserted the earlier rule (dispatch a hidden request while busy) now asserts the merged one, and a second case keeps the idle path: a hidden request the gateway rejects is dropped, never restored into the draft.

* fix(desktop): a hidden note mid-turn rides session.steer, never a user turn

A hidden request that landed while the model's turn ran went through the redirect path, which records a real user turn on the gateway and paints one in the transcript. The base branch's "[connectors] The user clicked Connect …" nudge showed up as the user's own bubble in a live run, and our "[setup] links opened" note would have done the same. The gateway already has the right primitive: session.steer injects text into the model's next tool result with no user turn. Both composers now expose it as onSteerHidden, and the composer's busy rule sends hidden requests through it. When the steer is refused the note queues with its hidden kind, the queue panel shows "Setup note" instead of the text, and the drain resubmits it hidden. Visible messages a button sends still redirect the turn as before.

brooklyn! 4f1966edac feat(desktop): connector cards that wait for the sign-in, and a guided first launch that holds together (#108292)
* feat(desktop): give Button a loading prop that swaps label for spinner without layout shift

The label stays in the box, invisible, and the spinner is absolutely
centred over it, so a Connect or Approve button keeps its width while it
works instead of collapsing to a spinner. The approval bar had the same
thrash and moves onto it.

* refactor(desktop): one consent card for connectors and MCP setup

McpSetupTool rendered its own copy of the connector card's markup. It now
renders ConnectorCard for the pending question and ConnectorSummary once
settled, and the card gains what MCP needed: keyboard accelerators, a
source line, a question heading. The card also gets an avatar variant
(40px mark in the left gutter, text and buttons on one column) and a
collapseWhenSettled switch so a connector can stay a full card with a
green Connected pill in the action slot while MCP keeps its one-line
summary. Brand marks for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Discord, Telegram and
Spotify; Slack via Tabler because simple-icons dropped the mark.

* feat(desktop): connector card drives the agent through manage_connections wait

The offer used to end in a Continue in chat button, and the agent, seeing
an unconnected status, would improvise around the app. Now the card does
what the TUI does. Clicking Connect opens the browser and sends one hidden
line telling the agent to park in manage_connections action=wait for that
slug and to never call connect again (a second link cancels the one being
signed into). Not now sends its own line. A hidden request that lands
while the turn is busy steers it, or queues if the turn just ended.

Which call owns the live card changes too: consecutive calls naming the
same apps are one exchange (connect, the wait, the status that follows),
and the first of the last exchange is the card, so the agent's wait no
longer demotes the card mid-authorization and mints a fresh one below it.
A targeted ask renders one or two bare cards; only a real catalog gets the
header, search and refresh.

* feat(desktop): onboarding connects apps in chat and keeps tasks finishable without them

The welcome chat knew connectors only as preferences to pick and wire up
later, so asked to connect Gmail it invented a Settings page that does not
exist. Both scripts now carry one rule set: status once, one batched
connect for every app named, the card is the ask so write a line and end
the turn, never route around a declined app with another client or
credential. The build handoff checks real connection status instead of
asserting none are connected, and the first task must be finishable, not
free of, the apps they picked. The connectors card explains what
connecting means and reports the count on its Continue button.

* fix(tools): resolve the Nous identity for share_auth profiles in the connector gate

A profile created with share_auth has no auth.json of its own and signs
in through the root store. Every other credential reader falls back to
the global root; the connector gate read HERMES_HOME/auth.json directly,
saw nothing, and stripped manage_connections from the profile's tool
list, so the welcome chat's agent truthfully reported the tool missing.
The gate now goes through get_provider_auth_state.

* fix(agent): name a provider retry backoff on the live status line

The retry status is buffered and replays only when every retry fails, so
during a 60s backoff after a 5xx the user saw a bare spinner. Right after
a connector sign-in landed this read as the agent going silent. The
backoff now also rewrites the live wait notice, which the desktop already
renders in the thread status row; it is transient and clears on recovery.

* test(desktop): connector rehearsal launcher and flagged connector spec

connector-rehearsal.mjs starts the real desktop and backend under a fresh
HERMES_HOME with no copied credentials, a fixed Vite port and CDP on 9344,
so the onboarding connector flow can be driven end to end by hand or from
outside. The Playwright spec covers the flagged connector step.

* fix(desktop): send the agent back into wait when the user keeps waiting after a timeout

The card's Keep waiting re-entered the poll but the agent's own wait had
timed out too and nothing told it to go back in, so it would start
talking mid-authorization. keepWaiting now fires onWaiting like connect
does. Tests also pin that an expired or revoked grant asks the gateway
for reconnect, not connect.

* style(desktop): blank lines in connector-flow test per lint

* feat(desktop): HERMES_SKIP_INTRO=1 / --skip-intro skips the first-run film

The intro is a one-time reveal, so anyone rehearsing the guided chat behind
it sits through it on every fresh HERMES_HOME. The flag rides the existing
launch-flags path (main → preload → renderer) next to guestOnboarding and
only gates isIntroRevealEnabled; the backend never sees it. The rehearsal
launcher sets it.

* fix(desktop): onboarding card Continue stays Done after the transcript rebuilds

The card kept its Done flag in component state. The hidden submit and the
turn-end hydrate both rebuild the message list, so the card remounted with
the flag false and Continue came back live, letting a step be answered
twice. The committed steps now live with the other onboarding answers,
keyed by step, and the first-build chip pick rides the same store.
remember_onboarding projects by key, so the new field never reaches USER.md.

* fix(desktop): no provider picker or free-tier chip over the guided first launch

Two sign-in surfaces leaked into the guide. A credential probe on the
setup profile (a free-tier token mid refresh, a session before its runtime
settled) hit requestDesktopOnboarding and dropped the provider picker over
the chat the user was in; and the statusbar free-tier chip sat there
offering a second sign-in the whole time. Both now yield while the gate
phase is cinematic, guided or handoff. The free tier is the provider for
those phases, and the guide offers sign-in on its own ready screen.

* fix(desktop): onboarding connector picks are real catalog slugs

The picker offered Spotify, GitHub and Stripe, none of which the deployed
connector catalog carries, and spelled Calendar and Drive with hyphens the
gateway does not use. A pick the build chat could not honour ended as
"Spotify isn't in the connector list" after the user had been told to
expect it. The list is now twelve slugs from the live status catalog,
spelled as the gateway spells them; GitHub is out (the terminal has git
and gh), chat channels stay on Messaging. Marks for the new entries; the
Google marks answer both spellings. The build runbook offers the picked
connections in its first turn rather than after the work is underway.

* fix(desktop): the free-tier ready screen never interrupts the guided chat

A readiness round fires when the layout pick assembles the window, and it
raised the free-tier ready screen over the conversation: the user was
dropped into the main app, dismissed it, and came back to a card they had
already answered. The guide is the introduction. The ready screen now
yields while the gate is cinematic, guided or handoff, and the notice is
acked the moment the guided chat takes the screen, not only when the film
does, so a skipped film no longer leaves it pending.

* feat(desktop): tour options that lead to building, and a fork that follows the tour

"Just the basics" and "Show me around" read as a click-through with no
exit; "I'll figure it out" read as declining help. Now Quick tour, Show me
everything, and Skip, let's build something. The script also folds the
fork into the same turn as the tour, so when the user closes the overlay
the next ask is already waiting instead of a transcript that ends on the
tour call.

* feat(desktop): the onboarding connector picker reads the live catalog

A hardcoded list, however carefully copied from today's catalog, is the
next drift. The picker now asks connectors.list through the same
session-owned RPC the connector cards use and offers exactly what the
gateway carries: a curated lead order puts the everyday apps first, chat
channels stay on Messaging, everything else is reachable by search. The
picks are gateway slugs, handed straight to manage_connections. No
catalog (toolset off, gateway unreachable) ends the step honestly with
Skip instead of inventing apps.

* test(desktop): the guided first launch never forces a sign-in

The acceptance criterion the guided onboarding was built to, as a test:
while the gate is cinematic, guided or handoff, the provider picker does
not open and a credential warning is dropped rather than deferred to the
next send. Outside the guide the picker opens as before. Red against the
tree before the guards landed (6 of 9).

* fix(desktop): a relaunch mid-guide resumes the guide, in the guide's shape

Closing the app during the guided first launch and reopening it booted the
normal shell around the persisted solo layout: the connecting splash, the
stock composer and model picker, a small window whose sidebars would not
open, while the gate still read guided. The gate now queues a kickoff for
the guided phase too (the kickoff adopts the existing guide chat by title),
takes the solo shape before the gateway opens rather than after, and the
connecting overlay yields to the guide's own opening. A typed reply in the
composer now closes an ask card and the first-build chips the same way a
click does; the layout card's Continue comes back Done.

* style(desktop): one answeredAfter helper for the ask card and first-build chips

* fix(desktop): the guide takes its shape on the tick the film ends, not after the window shows

Between the film and the greeting the full-size shell painted for a beat:
finishIntroReveal showed the main window, then the kickoff shrank it once
the setup profile answered. The listener on the intro's hidden edge now
takes the guide's shape (solo layout + small centred window) synchronously,
so the window is already the guide when it is shown. One takeGuideShape
owns the pair; kickoff and the boot gate call it idempotently.

* style(desktop): the 'nothing connects yet' line reads first on the connectors card
