Portal serves anthropic/* on two routes. The native /v1/messages wire, which
Hermes has used since 02d5e23085, re-writes the previous turn's prompt cache
on 14-20% of consecutive calls in concurrent tool loops; the chat/completions
route does not. Measured 2026-09-06, 20 concurrent sessions x 6 tool calls on
Fable 5.1, same account, same hour, same first-party pin:
Nous /v1/messages 180 pairs, 25 stuck (13.9%); 3 earlier 40-session
runs 15.0 / 17.3 / 20.2%; unchanged by the pin
Nous /v1/chat/completions 320 pairs (2 runs), 0 stuck
OpenRouter direct, pinned 161 pairs, 0 stuck
"stuck" = cache_read on call k+1 equals cache_read on call k instead of
call k's prompt size: the last write was not visible, the turn (~28K) was
written twice. Every stuck pair had byte-identical system, tools and
per-message shas, so it is not client-side mutation. At $10-20/M for
cache writes that is 15-20% of a fan-out's write bill.
The cause is inside the portal's native route (every element of its
outgoing request reproduces clean from outside; NousResearch/api#227
carries the diagnostics). Until it is fixed, anthropic/* rides
chat/completions. nous.anthropic_wire: native opts back in. Cost of
chat: prior-turn thinking travels as OpenAI-style reasoning fields, and
cache_control scopes are translated by the portal's adapter.
Tests: new test_nous_anthropic_wire_default.py reads the knob through the
real config loader in a temp HERMES_HOME and through
resolve_runtime_provider (both settings); the existing native-wire
contract suite selects native via an autouse fixture so the wire keeps
working for the flip-back. Live: a real AIAgent on this branch,
provider=nous + anthropic/claude-fable-5.1, dispatches to
chat/completions with the session_id intact.
- Generalize Gemini 3 thinking config model prefix match to gemini-3*
- Add pricing snapshot entries for gemini-3.7-flash and gemini-3.8-flash
- Add model identifiers to Google, OpenRouter, and Vertex CLI lists
- Add test coverage for gemini-3.8-flash thinkingLevel configuration
Trim the salvaged suite to the behaviour contracts: a picker exception or Ctrl+C leaves
config.yaml's model exactly as snapshotted (parametrized), and an absent active_provider
stays absent through snapshot+restore. The mock-dispatch tests (asserting calls into our own
helpers) are dropped. evals/cli_fallback_add_picker_error.py drives the real
`hermes fallback add` under a Linux PTY into an ordinary picker OSError and checks the
persisted model: stranded on base, restored after.
Follow-up on the cherry-picked fix: _defer_update_notice no longer takes the Rich console it
can never safely use (the notice always lands after patch_stdout owns stdout), the unit test
asserts the contract at prompt_toolkit's boundary (an ANSI fragment reaches
print_formatted_text, with no raw ESC/markup in the visible text) instead of patching our own
cprint, and evals/cli_deferred_notice.py drives the real CLI under a Linux PTY with a FIFO-gated
update cache to A/B the late-notice cases (garbled on base, clean after).
The deferred update notice ("N commits behind") was rendered via
console.print which writes ANSI escapes directly to stdout. Under
patch_stdout (active in the interactive CLI), the StdoutProxy strips
ESC bytes, leaving visible [1;33m...[0m artifacts.
Fix: render Rich markup to an ANSI string via a captured Console, then
route through cprint (which uses prompt_toolkit ANSI parser) to
bypass the StdoutProxy mangling.
This is the same class of bug as #2262 (fixed by #2448 for agent._print_fn
and display.py), but the _defer_update_notice callsite in banner.py was
not covered by that fix.
Fixes#83969
Parametrized refusal test (bare/fenced/uppercase-fenced truncated objects) asserts
profile.yaml is byte-identical afterwards; one prose test keeps the lenient
fallback contract. Replaces five near-duplicate tests from #104075.
Campaign tracker: https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/104154
hermes_cli/profile_describer.py's aux-LLM response parser is documented as
"lenient, never raises": when the reply doesn't parse as JSON via
_extract_json_blob, it falls back to treating the WHOLE raw reply as plain
prose and persists it (truncated to 280 chars) as profile.yaml's
description.
That fallback exists for models that ignore the JSON-output instruction and
just answer in prose -- reasonable. But it doesn't distinguish that case
from a reply that DID start out as the requested JSON object and was cut
off mid-object by the aux model or transport. _extract_json_blob requires a
matching closing brace, so a truncated object (no `}` at all, or one cut
off mid-string) returns None just like plain prose does, and the fallback
then persists the raw JSON fragment verbatim: literal leading `{`, `\n`
escapes, a sentence chopped mid-word (#104067).
Fix: when parsing fails, check whether the reply (after the existing
code-fence strip) still looks JSON-shaped (starts with `{`). If so, it's a
malformed/truncated structured reply, not prose -- refuse it and return
ok=False instead of persisting the fragment. Only fall through to the
raw-text-as-prose fallback when the reply never looked like JSON to begin
with, so genuinely prose-only aux replies keep working exactly as before.
Also logs one INFO line on the refusal path, per the issue's note that the
silent fallback made this undiagnosable.
Update (review feedback from @jerrygooch): profile_describer._FENCE_RE was
case-sensitive, so an uppercase ```JSON fence wasn't stripped -- stripping
left "JSON\n{..." which doesn't start with "{", so a truncated response
under that fence variant still fell through to the prose fallback and got
persisted, defeating the fix for that case. Added re.IGNORECASE to
_FENCE_RE, aligning it with kanban_specify._FENCE_RE (which already used
re.IGNORECASE), and added a regression test for the uppercase-fence case.
Added tests/hermes_cli/test_profile_describer.py coverage: a truncated
object cut off mid-sentence (the real-world shape from the issue), one cut
off right after the opening brace, the same truncation under a ```json
fence, the same truncation under an uppercase ```JSON fence, and a
regression guard that a genuine plain-prose reply still hits the existing
lenient fallback unchanged.

The tail clause was correct only by ordering (exit_code != 0 there meant
exit_code is None). Name what it encodes: a stop_reason counts only when
nothing vouched for success. Same truth table. The three literal-dict tests on
the predicate collapse into one parametrized contract; the handoff-exit test
binds to COMMAND_BOUNDARY_STOP_REASON instead of re-spelling it.
update_contract writes {"outcome": "refused", "stop_reason": <code>} with no
exit_code; that is the one production receipt where the stop_reason clause in
_receipt_looks_unfinished is load-bearing. The previous negative control used
exit_code=1, which the exit_code branch already catches. Docstring reworded:
a KeyboardInterrupt never lands on a success receipt (the boundary finalize is
a no-op once the inner path finalized).
On hosts where Docker ships as a snap (Ubuntu cloud images / Azure VMs), the
snap's AppArmor confinement turns two sandbox hardening flags into a dead
container at start: `--init` fails with "exec /sbin/docker-init: operation not
permitted" and `--security-opt no-new-privileges` then fails every exec the
same way ("exec /usr/bin/sleep: operation not permitted"). This is snapd
LP#1908448 — not probeable from the client, and docker_extra_args cannot remove
flags we add.
`terminal.docker_snap_compat: true` drops exactly those two flags; cap-drop ALL,
the tmpfs hardening, PID limits and the privdrop caps are unchanged, and a
warning is logged at container start. Bridged everywhere the other docker_*
keys are (CLI env map, gateway env map, `hermes config set` sync, terminal_tool
env read, the shared container_config shaper, DEFAULT_CONFIG).
serve --isolated is detached on purpose (setsid/nohup, PPID 1) so it survives the SSH
channel closing, and every teardown path lived on the client. A laptop that sleeps
mid-session (dark wake reconnects the tunnel, spawns a backend, sleeps again) therefore
left a new backend behind every cycle, each one an extra writer on state.db — the
multi-writer source behind the WAL corruption incidents.
Only for backends started with --ssh-session-token-file: an ASGI wrapper counts accepted
WebSocket sessions on every dashboard route without touching the handlers; a watchdog
requests a graceful uvicorn exit (WAL checkpoint, exit 0) once no client has been
connected for dashboard.ssh_isolated_idle_grace_s (default 15 min) AND no agent turn is
running. An unreadable turn state fails closed (the backend stays up). Loopback normally
disables the WS ping, but across a tunnel the local socket stays healthy while the far
end sleeps, so these backends keep a slow ping (60s / 10 min) that a GIL-holding turn
cannot trip.
Design, client-count/turn-probe/fail-closed shape and the tunnel-ping rationale from
#101678 by @StanleyStetson; this is the slim redo on the decomposed web server (no
exclusive home lock / handover protocol — the newcomer never needs to evict an idle
incumbent once idle incumbents exit on their own).
docker info needs the /info endpoint, which socket proxies such as tecnativa block by
default, so doctor reported 'docker daemon not running' against a fully working
DOCKER_HOST. docker version hits /version and is what the backend itself probes with.
The bare deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash slug is the pre-snapshot release; both
aggregators now carry deepseek-v4-flash-0731 (and Nous exposes the rolling
~deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash-latest alias). Keeping both rows in the curated
picker just duplicates the flash tier.
- OPENROUTER_MODELS (derives the nous list): drop deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash
- model-catalog.json regenerated
Deliberately KEPT: alibaba-token-plan / opencode-go / commandcode / deepseek
direct plugin fallback_models + default_aux_model (bare id is the wire slug
those providers serve), DEFAULT_CONTEXT_LENGTHS / reasoning floor / pricing
snapshot entries (manually-typed id still behaves), and the
deepseek-chat/deepseek-reasoner -> deepseek-v4-flash alias normalization.
Both shell-command guard entry points returned approval from the isolated-container fast
path before the operator's approvals.deny rules were evaluated, so a Docker sandbox with
no host mounts (or singularity/modal/daytona/vercel) skipped the entire user deny list.
The deny list is documented as never bypassable: it states what the agent may DO, not
what it can reach. Evaluate it before the container skip; the built-in dangerous-command
heuristics keep skipping there. hermes approvals test mirrors the new order.
Salvaged from #91029 by @fangliquanflq.
Behaviour-preserving cleanup of the salvaged fix:
- reset_statuses goes back to replace(e, **_CLEAR_STATUS, ...) instead of
re-spelling the six status fields; every other clear site uses the
constant, so a seventh field would otherwise drift here. The
count/new_entries/cleared_ids trio collapses to the original stale-list
shape, and entry.failure_reason is read through the dataclass's
__getattr__ like the rest of the module.
- Both bypass sites (write_credential_pool, _update_root_pool_rows) pass
disk_entry=None to _merge_disk_cooldown_state for a cleared id instead of
adding a parallel branch; the helper already returns the entry unchanged
for a missing disk row.
- The cleared-id set in _update_root_pool_rows is built once, not per disk
row (an Iterable argument would also have been drained on the first row).
- persist_pool_entries passes status_cleared_ids plainly; the kwargs splat
existed only for one test fake, which now accepts the kwarg.
- Docstrings trimmed to the WHY.
Same 116 targeted tests green; reverting the two source files to main still
fails the two regression tests and passes the guard test.
Port onto the split layout: persist_pool_entries now forwards
status_cleared_ids to BOTH writers — write_credential_pool (hermes_cli/
auth.py) and the root-store row merge for single-use-refresh providers
(_update_root_pool_rows), which the original fix predates. Both skip the
disk recency merge for deliberately-cleared entries; the kwarg is only
sent when non-empty so upstream fakes with the old signature keep
working. reset_statuses clears failure_reason (lives in extra, replace()
cannot reach it) alongside the status fields.
tests/agent/test_credential_pool.py: 62 passed; refresh-race suite: 3
passed (mutation: the reset/binding tests fail with the fix stashed).
The dashboard-auth-gate / user-providers failures are pre-existing on
pristine upstream/main (reproduced with changes stashed).
In a multiplex dashboard (one process serving every profile on the host),
a secondary profile's terminal.backend could leak into the shared
os.environ and silently override the launch profile's terminal backend.
A profile configured for terminal.backend: ssh would find itself running
every command locally because a sibling profile with backend: local had
polluted the shared environment.
The tell is an asymmetric env state on the launch session:
TERMINAL_ENV=local # leaked from a sibling profile
TERMINAL_SSH_HOST=10.10.0.103 # still the launch profile's, untouched
A restart does not help: as soon as the sibling profile is touched again
(a turn, a cron tick), the shared env is re-poisoned.
Root cause: env_loader._reapply_terminal_config_bridge() guards "only
re-bridge config into the shared os.environ when this load is for the
process's own profile" via _process_hermes_home(). That helper delegated
to get_hermes_home(), which follows the context-local
set_hermes_home_override a per-request task installs. When a per-turn
handler is scoped to a secondary profile and triggers a dotenv reload,
both sides of the comparison resolve to that secondary profile, the guard
passes, and the bridge writes the wrong profile's terminal.backend into
the shared environment. Because the secondary profile's config carries no
TERMINAL_SSH_* keys, only TERMINAL_ENV is overwritten, producing the
asymmetric state above.
The helper was introduced for the config-cache key (where following the
active home is correct) and later reused for the terminal bridge guard,
where the override-following semantics are wrong.
Fix: delegate _process_hermes_home() to get_process_hermes_home(), the
override-immune resolver built for exactly this. It reflects the scope the
process was launched under, ignoring per-task overrides. Both call sites
(the bridge guard and the secrets-cache reuse check) want the true process
home. Single-profile / CLI behaviour is unchanged: with no active
override the two resolvers are identical.
Complements the terminal_tool._active_environments session-key fix: that
scopes the per-session environment cache; this keeps the shared os.environ
the cache reads TERMINAL_ENV from uncontaminated in the first place.
Adds tests/hermes_cli/test_terminal_bridge_profile_scope.py covering both
the override-immune resolver and the no-leak reload behaviour.
Alibaba shipped qwen3.8-max-0902 (alias qwen3.8-max-2026-09-02), the upgraded
snapshot of Qwen3.8-Max: 1M context / 131K output, $2 in / $6 out. Both
aggregators now serve it and dropped the bare slug from their catalogs
(verified 2026-09-02: OpenRouter /v1/models + a 200 completion echoing the
slug; Nous Portal /v1/models).
- OPENROUTER_MODELS (feeds the nous list too): qwen/qwen3.8-max -> qwen/qwen3.8-max-0902
- _ALIBABA_TOKEN_PLAN_MODELS: qwen3.8-max-preview -> qwen3.8-max-0902
- test_empty_model_fallback fixture follows the nous catalog slug
- model-catalog.json regenerated
No new metadata: DEFAULT_CONTEXT_LENGTHS substring-matches qwen3.8-max (1M),
reasoning floor prefix fires (180s), both aggregator routes bill via
official_models_api. alibaba/alibaba-cn/opencode-go/setup.py left unchanged
(out of scope).
A gateway with no profile mapping (or one whose relaunch could not be armed) is
SIGTERMed and listed under "Restart manually" — by design it has no successor and
publishes no fleet-matrix row. It still counted in ``killed_pids`` and the
pre-restart snapshot, so ``_fleet_probe_expected_runtimes`` demanded rows that
could not exist and a fully successful update exited 1 with "Fleet version check
returned no rows even though gateway runtimes were expected", leaving the
fleet_restart_pending marker behind and every later CLI start warning about it.
Track the unmapped stops on the restart outcome and subtract them from the
row-predicting signals (``fleet_probe_signals``); relaunched/systemd gateways
still predict rows exactly as before.
A dashboard-only runtime plan (gateway never started) made
_fleet_probe_expected_runtimes() return True from the unfiltered
'plan.runtimes is non-empty' check. collect_fleet_versions() reports
gateway identities only, so the probe waited for rows that cannot exist,
printed the incomplete-verification warning, and exited 1 after a
successful update (#97332).
Key the plan-derived expectation on kind == 'gateway' records — the same
row-capability rule already applied to the Windows resume token (#93406)
— and update the two tests that pinned the old object() placeholder so
they pin the runtime-kind distinction. Restart-phase, killed-PID, and
pre-restart-PID signals still fail closed unchanged.
Widen the salvaged receipt protection to every updater-owned module: the
pre-update plan's ``RuntimeRecord`` dataclass (``update_inventory``) has the same
failure — the plan is built before the purge and the post-restart reconciliation
filters with ``isinstance``, so an evicted module means a fresh class, zero matches,
and an empty runtime-outcome report. One prefix rule instead of a name list that
has to be re-fixed per symptom.
Inspection surfaces run on partially built HermesCLI instances (tests use
HermesCLI.__new__), so the attribute needs a default; declare it once on
the class next to _seeded_first_message rather than getattr at five sites.
Resolve each remaining toolset once and state the keep-rule positively
(no static tools, or at least one tool survived the runtime subtraction)
instead of building a drop-set in a second resolve loop.
show_banner/_show_status call get_tool_definitions with disabled_toolsets,
but test and early-init paths build HermesCLI via __new__ without running
__init__, so self.disabled_toolsets was missing and CI failed with
AttributeError in test_cli_context_warning.

hermes tools --summary and CLI /tools used name-level disabled_toolsets subtraction, so disabling debugging still showed terminal/web/file as enabled while runtime stripped those tools. Prune platform toolsets after tool-level subtraction and pass disabled_toolsets into CLI get_tool_definitions calls.

* fix(desktop): treat a macOS ps: parent-marker mismatch as inconclusive, not death
`ps -o lstart=` is a TZ/locale-rendered wall-clock string. Electron caches it
once per app lifetime; the backend re-renders it per spawn. A timezone change
(travel, or the DST boundary) while the app stays open makes the SAME instant
differ byte-for-byte, and _is_serve_orphaned() treated that as proof the parent
died -- os._exit(0) ~5ms after HERMES_BACKEND_READY, silently, on every respawn
until a full quit.
Route mismatches through _parent_start_marker_mismatch_is_conclusive(): linux:/
win:/winms: machine markers stay conclusive (PID-reuse defence intact); any ps:
side degrades to the PID-liveness check the legacy Desktop path already uses.
Log one warning before os._exit(0) so the exit is no longer traceless.

* fix(desktop): reject truncated ps: parent markers; blank marker env means absent
A ps: marker that got whitespace-split in env plumbing (`ps:Sat`) passed
_valid_parent_start_marker and armed a watchdog that could never match, so
the backend exited 0 right after HERMES_BACKEND_READY. Require a full
lstart value (>=4 tokens, a 4-digit year, a time). Treat empty
HERMES_PARENT_START_MARKER / HERMES_PARENT_NONCE as absent so a blank
inherited value degrades to PID-only tracking instead of disarming or
misfiring.
* chore: map contributor email for drewTuzson
* fix(desktop): log when the parent-death watchdog disarms on an unusable marker
Disarming is the fail-safe branch (the backend keeps serving) but it also
means this backend will never reap itself when the Desktop dies. Leave one
warning naming the rejected marker so that downgrade is not traceless.
* test(desktop): live macOS proof that a TZ-drifted ps: marker no longer kills the backend
Runs the real start_server in a subprocess against the host ps, with the
marker rendered under Europe/Paris and the backend under America/New_York.
Asserts READY + still alive after several watchdog polls, then that the
backend still exits once the stand-in parent is killed. Fails on main with
the reported symptom (exit 0, live parent); macos_only lane.

* fix(dashboard): prevent PTY input from blocking event loop
* fix(win-pty): don't terminate a healthy ConPTY on write cancellation; log leaked write workers
Review follow-up to the backpressure fix.
CancelledError on WinPtyBridge.write() ran the same path as a timeout and
force-terminated the ConPTY. Cancellation means the owning socket went away
mid-write, which is the keep-alive session's normal reattach case, not a
wedged child; killing the process there defeats the PTY-outlives-socket
design. Give the in-flight write the shutdown grace window and only
terminate if it never lands.
When terminate() fails to unblock pywinpty, the worker stays parked in the
default executor. That was swallowed by a bare except; log it so a slow
thread-pool starvation is diagnosable.

* feat(pty_bridge): mark the dashboard-spawned TUI with HERMES_PTY_HOST
Ink needs to know when its emulator is the dashboard's xterm.js rather
than a native terminal, so it can drop hidden-tab recovery work that only
makes sense for emulators that coalesce output.
Co-authored-by: Raymond <supere989@users.noreply.github.com>
* fix(tui): skip the focus-in erase+repaint under the dashboard PTY
Ink answers a DECSET 1004 focus-in with a full clear+repaint to heal rows
a native emulator may have dropped while the tab was hidden. xterm.js fed
by the dashboard WebSocket never drops frames, and it reports focus on
every OS window blur/focus, so under the dashboard that repaint was a
visible "session reloaded" flash on every alt-tab. Keep the mode
re-assert and keep delivering the focus report to TerminalFocusProvider
(the composer hides its cursor on blur); only the repaint is skipped.
Co-authored-by: Raymond <supere989@users.noreply.github.com>
* fix(web): restore terminal focus after an OS app-switch
Alt-tabbing away and back lands browser focus on <body>, so Ctrl+V never
reached the composer. Pull focus back into xterm on window focus under
the same ownership rule tab activation already uses, extracted into
shouldRestoreTerminalFocus so both paths share it.

Six slugs land in the nous and openrouter curated lists, above the gpt-5.6 line:
openai/gpt-6-astra{,-fast,-flex} and openai/gpt-6-astra-pro{,-fast,-flex}.
Nous Portal serves the tiers as distinct slugs (verified live: each echoes its id, service_tier
default/priority/flex, cost 1x/2x/0.5x). OpenRouter serves them as ENDPOINTS of the base model
(tags openai/fast, openai/flex) and silently routes an unknown suffix to the standard tier at
standard price, so the OpenRouter profile rewrites a tier slug to its base wire model and pins
provider.only to that tier's endpoints (OPENROUTER_ENDPOINT_PINS). The base slug is pinned to
openai/azure/azure-us so default routing never lands on a flex or fast endpoint.
Provider-agnostic metadata: one DEFAULT_CONTEXT_LENGTHS entry (gpt-6-astra: 1,050,000, live on
OpenRouter for both models; substring-matches -pro and the tier suffixes). Pricing is skipped:
both routes bill via official_models_api. Reasoning floor not added (no evidence of long thinks).
Follow-up to the salvaged fix from #102994. The quickstart leg tests
stubbed web_deps.late itself, so the resolution path that regressed
(late() -> web_server facade -> getattr) was never exercised; the PR's
proposed tests pinned the module string instead, which fails on any
future move of the symbol even when the call site is updated.
Stub only the leaf (web_server_config._apply_model_assignment_sync) so
the real late() runs, and add one invariant test: _assign_default must
call it with ("main", "llamacpp", model_id, "", "", ""). Red on base
(AttributeError), green with the fix; not tied to where the symbol lives.
Drop the docstring parenthetical that described test mechanics.
The whole-codebase refactor moved _apply_model_assignment_sync from the
web_server facade into web_server_config, but _assign_default in
web_routers/local_models.py still resolved it through the default late()
module (web_server), which no longer carries the symbol. A local-model
quickstart therefore failed its final 'making it your default' step with
AttributeError: module 'hermes_cli.web_server' has no attribute
'_apply_model_assignment_sync'.
Pass the defining module explicitly to web_deps.late() so the call
resolves against hermes_cli.web_server_config, matching how the sibling
models.py router imports the same helper. Update the two quickstart test
stubs to accept the module argument the real late(name, module=...) takes.
Adds plugins/web/perplexity — a keyed-only WebSearchProvider over httpx:
- search: POST https://api.perplexity.ai/search (documented Search API),
search_context_size=low so `snippet` stays description-sized;
results[].snippet -> description, max_results capped at the API's 20.
- extract: POST /sdk/content/snippets — the query-relevant page-excerpt
route behind `pplx content snippets` (the CLI's `content fetch` is
deprecated upstream). web_extract has no query, so the URLs' path words
serve as the relevance query; per-URL `error` entries survive a 200.
- Wired into the same touchpoints as the other keyed vendors: legacy
backend set + credential ladder + availability probe (web_tools),
registry preference walk, OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS, `hermes config`/status/
dump key lists, nous_subscription direct-credential detection, setup
summary, test conftests, docs.
Not a keyless-ring member (Perplexity has no anonymous tier). Related
closed PRs #9192 / #23981 / #45225 predate the plugin ABC.
The compat scanner derived a directory from manifest.path by splitting at the
first ':' and falling back to .parent when the result was not a dir. An
entry-point plugin (`vendor_plugin:register`) and a Windows path
(`C:\Users\...`) both collapsed to '.', so a stray .py in the launch directory
was attributed to the plugin and the installed package was never scanned.
After the removal date that disables the wrong plugin. `_scan_root()` now
takes directory manifests verbatim and resolves entry points via
importlib.util.find_spec to the installed package dir; anything unresolvable
scans nothing.
`plugins.allow_deprecated_imports` used bool(), so the YAML string "false"
opened the post-removal bypass. It now requires the literal boolean True, and
summary_lines() says "force-loaded" instead of "DISABLED" when the override is
what kept the plugins running.

The compat sweep dropped the auth-facade re-export of _mark_qwen_oauth_active
while hermes_cli/auth_commands.py still reached it through the auth_mod module
alias, so every 'hermes auth add qwen' died with AttributeError on this branch.
Import it from hermes_cli/auth_qwen where it now lives. Module-alias attribute
reads dodge import-time checks; the sweep in the PR thread found this to be the
only production hit of that class.

Root AGENTS.md 100,797 → 29,295 chars: what applies everywhere (invariants, rubric, footprint ladder, layout + shape rules, commit/PR, testing) plus a routing table. Area rules move to agent/, hermes_cli/, gateway/, tools/, plugins/, tui_gateway/, web/, skills/, cron/, apps/desktop/src/ AGENTS.md (3–9k each; ceiling is now 32k after d61cff60e3, target ~8k). Long-form process-identity and skin key tables go to website/docs/developer-guide/cli-internals.md. Zero rule loss; map in /tmp/rf/agents_md_zero_loss.md. Stale Bot Mode test paths corrected to apps/desktop/src/plugins/hermes-bots/*.test.ts.
Live Desktop E2E (real Electron, worktree backend, demo plugin on old paths) found the modal never fired:
compat_report() was only called from the CLI banner / doctor / update / plugins-compat surfaces, none of
which run inside the Desktop's `serve` backend, so .plugin-compat-report.json was never written.
PluginManager.discover_and_load now refreshes the report from the manifests it just discovered (fail-open).
E2E after the fix, all five acceptance steps green on the real seat: report written and names the plugin;
native dialog 'Plugins need an update' with plugin, date, and `hermes plugins compat`; OK persists the
dismissal; relaunch with the same userData shows nothing and logs no 'compat notice shown'; fixing the
plugin's imports deletes the report and shows nothing.
Live PTY check: the banner block named the plugin correctly but was preceded by one stderr
HermesPluginCompatWarning per moved name, duplicating it without the plugin name. warn_once now also
logs at WARNING (agent.log/gateway.log keep the record); cli.main() appends an ignore filter for the
category before plugin discovery. Appended, not overriding: -W error::...HermesPluginCompatWarning
(tests, plugin authors' CI) still wins, verified with the strict test run.
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py is now the single source of truth for the compat window:
COMPAT_REMOVAL_DATE = 2026-09-14; scan_plugin() statically finds `from F import n`, `import F` + `F.n`,
alias forms and string targets against compat_manifest.json; compat_report() aggregates over the user's
ENABLED external (non-bundled) plugins; disable_reason() decides the loader's skip.
Surfaces (all read from that one report):
* CLI: yellow block under the banner naming plugins + date + `hermes plugins compat` (red + DISABLED after)
* `hermes plugins compat [--json] [path]`: file:line, old -> new per hit; exit 1 while anything remains;
`path` lets a plugin author scan their own checkout
* `hermes doctor`: "Plugin import paths (removed Sep 14, 2026)" section next to the xAI retirement check
* `hermes update`: post-update notice alongside the FTS/curator notices
* Desktop: compat_report() writes HERMES_HOME/.plugin-compat-report.json (deleted when clean); Electron
shows ONE warning dialog per distinct report after the backend is up and persists the dismissal in
userData/plugin-compat-dismissed.json. A new affected plugin, or the date passing, is a new report.
From the date, PluginManager skips a hitting external plugin before importing it, with the reason in
LoadedPlugin.error ("uses N import path(s) removed on 2026-09-14; run `hermes plugins compat` ...") — the
same path a plugin with a broken register() takes, so nothing else is affected. Escape hatch:
plugins.allow_deprecated_imports: true (config_defaults), which only helps until the compat commit is
actually reverted.
Docs: COMPAT_MANIFEST.md (removal date, what-happens table, author instructions), plugin dev guide section.
Tests: tests/test_plugin_compat_notice.py (scanner forms, report scope, date gate + escape hatch, summary
text, report file lifecycle, loader skip via a real PluginManager), electron/plugin-compat-notice.test.ts
(show once, re-show on a different set or on the date passing, malformed file ignored).
Live A/B on this box with a demo plugin on old paths: before the date it loads and the banner/doctor/report
name it; with today=2026-09-14 it is skipped with the reason and the banner turns red; with the escape
hatch it loads again.
Every PLUGIN-COMPAT __getattr__ now calls hermes_cli.plugin_compat.warn_once(facade, name, target) before
resolving, emitting a HermesPluginCompatWarning (FutureWarning) once per process per name: old path, new
path, removal target. Importing a facade for its live API stays silent; only resolving a moved name warns.
COMPAT_MANIFEST.md documents the warning and how to silence it during migration.
Verified the runtime never routes through a pointer: every entry point (run_agent, cli, hermes_cli.main,
gateway.run, tui_gateway.server, web_server, model_tools + tool discovery, hermes_state, cron.scheduler,
browser_tool, mcp_tool, kanban, auth) imports clean and `hermes doctor` runs end to end with the warning
promoted to an error.
Also restores the check_compat_pointers CI step to .github/workflows/lint.yml, which a0be177aac dropped
when the compat layer was regenerated (the lint script itself was present; the workflow step was not).
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py, tests/test_plugin_compat_warning.py and the two-line insert per facade are
part of the compat layer and go away with it.
Review findings on #102117 (independent reviewer + itsflownium):
* hermes_cli.kanban_db.connect / connect_closing pointed at hermes_cli.projects_db (different DB, no
board= parameter). The compat generator ranked candidate homes by path proximity when a name is
defined in several modules. Now it requires shape compatibility with the BASE definition (same
literal for constants, superset of parameter names for defs) and prefers the facade's own
<stem>_* sibling. Same class fixed for tools.tts_tool.DEFAULT_XAI_BASE_URL (-> tts_tool_providers),
and 17 constants/defs that had been pointed at same-named strangers (Matrix MAX_MESSAGE_LENGTH ->
Signal's 8000, tts MAX_TEXT_LENGTH -> BlueBubbles', honcho/retaindb/supermemory *_SCHEMA -> another
plugin's schema, ...) are now restored from BASE verbatim instead.
* send_yuanbao_direct (restored-def): body called adapter._outbound.send_direct, which HEAD moved to
the sender; rewritten to adapter._outbound.sender.send_direct.
* COMPAT_MANIFEST.md states the scope explicitly: public top-level names only; private names and
test monkeypatch seams are not preserved.
* scripts/check_subprocess_stdin.py: _splat_carries_stdin looked 30 lines ahead in the file text
and was satisfied by an unrelated later stdin=; it now finds the splatted name's definition via AST
and requires stdin inside that expression/body.
Tests: tests/test_compat_manifest_targets.py (pointer identity vs the facade's sibling; kanban
connect(board=) opens a Kanban DB, not projects.db; both FAIL on the previous layer),
test_subprocess_stdin_guard gains the false-negative probe, and the MoA -Q quiet-output contract
tests are back (tests/agent/test_moa_quiet_reference_output.py) against build_moa_facade.
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
