Two remaining halves of #89184 (Desktop Settings saves rewriting unrelated
config):
- The `fallback_providers` structured editor normalized every entry down to
`{provider, model}`, so any edit (remove a row, pick a model) re-emitted a
hand-written local-gateway chain without its `base_url` / `api_key` /
`key_env` / `api_mode` — the next autosave persisted bare pairs and the
fallbacks silently routed to the public provider. Entries now carry every
key through; the editor only owns the two selects.
- `PUT /api/model/moa` did `cfg = load_config(); cfg["moa"].update(...);
save_config(cfg)`: the whole default-expanded snapshot went back to disk,
so a Desktop MoA autosave re-persisted every other section too (the
2026-09-10 repro: `fallback_providers: []` written alongside the MoA block
the user had just edited). It now saves `{"moa": ...}` with
`merge_existing=True`, the same section-scoped write every other sparse
writer uses since #110535. Hand-edited moa keys (#58819) still survive.
The `model.default not persisted / base_url cleared` symptom from the 0.20.4
report no longer reproduces on main through the real REST path (Config page
diffs against a baseline since 5361867c6d32; `_denormalize_config_from_web`
keeps the on-disk `model:` block).
Backend half of the per-task effort control, on today's layout: POST /api/model/set
distinguishes omitted (leave the task's override alone) from explicit null (clear →
inherit) via model_fields_set, canonicalises a level through parse_reasoning_effort
(400 on an unknown one), and "Reset all to main" also drops every override. GET
/api/model/auxiliary returns reasoning_effort per task and the row summary shows it.
The inherit row reads "inherit · main model effort" (own i18n key in all six locales)
rather than reusing the provider's "auto · use main model" copy — the two mean
different things and the reused string read as "use the main model" for the effort.
Runtime already consumes auxiliary.<task>.reasoning_effort (agent/auxiliary_client.py)
and hermes model writes the same key (#110346), so Desktop and CLI now edit one value.
Closes#89259. Salvages #90649 by @higgs1729.
* fix(auth): a sign-in from the free tier settles the default model and route once, for every caller
Picking the free-tier row leaves model.default at nous/welcome pinned to the welcome host. After a
sign-in an account cannot keep either: the welcome host refuses account tokens, and the portal host
serves nous/welcome as a paid model. One completion step, anon_auth.settle_after_upgrade, now runs
after the account is persisted: a config on the free tier's route moves to the account's inference
host and the recommended default for the account's plan, through the same config write a plain
Nous login uses; a config on the user's own model is left alone. The pick is the one
GET /api/model/recommended-default already makes, factored into models.recommended_nous_default_model
so the CLI and the desktop land on the same model. hermes auth upgrade prints the new default.
* fix(auth): a sign-in completion with no eligible recommendation leaves no default model
The static provider-wide default is not narrowed by the account's plan or org policy, so writing it
as a fallback could persist a model the account may not use. When the recommendation cannot yield a
model, the route still moves to the account's host but model.default is left unset; the CLI says so
and points at `hermes model`.
* docs(free-tier): say what happens when no recommendation is available after sign-in
* fix(auth): sign-in completion moves the host and clears the default in one config write
Two writes could fail between them and leave the account host paired with nous/welcome.
_update_config_for_provider gains clear_default so the caller with no model to offer removes
model.default in the same atomic write that sets the host.
An aux task pinned to a private endpoint via `base_url` (a home Ollama
box at `byron.local`, a LAN IP, localhost) is the intended per-task
endpoint feature and can never bill a provider. The Settings → Model
banner still counted it as "still run on openai" forever and offered
"Reset all to main", which would wipe the working local setup; the
post-switch `stale_aux` report had the same blind spot; and the aux row
never showed the `base_url` the backend already sends, so the pin was
indistinguishable from a paid-provider pin.
- `GET /api/model/auxiliary` now stamps each task with `local_endpoint`,
the verdict of the one canonical classifier
(`agent/model_metadata.py::is_local_endpoint`) — no TS mirror of the
private-range rules, so frontend and runtime cannot drift.
- Desktop: the persistent banner filter is the pure
`staleAuxAssignments()` and skips `local_endpoint` pins; the pinned row
appends ` · <base_url>` when one is set.
- `_stale_aux_pins` (post-switch report) skips local pins the same way.
- `is_local_endpoint`: `*.local` (RFC 6762 mDNS) now counts as local, and
IPv6 literals no longer ride the "no dots ⇒ unqualified host" rule, so
a global-scope address (`2607:f8b0::1`) is not local while `::1`,
ULA and link-local still are via the `ipaddress` scope checks.
Slim redo of #106236 (@webtecnica) and #106234 (@huklaa), which fixed the
same symptom with a client-side classifier copy; the bug class, row
display and mDNS/IPv6 classifier corrections are theirs.

For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
