Teknium 3114916ee4 fix(gateway): carry accepted-input ownership through persistence
Namespace delivery markers and assign fresh keyless turn identities instead
of inferring ownership from IDs or process-local row baselines. Query only
marker existence on the canonical live compression continuation and ancestors.
Preserve raw reply IDs and exclude metadata from provider wire messages.

Expand the two existing invariants with resumed cross-chat ID collisions,
a real independent SQLite writer, reaped siblings, and archived-history
allocation controls. All 20 full-handler checkpoints and 63 targeted tests pass.

Teknium 93af3db01d fix: checkpoint Kanban completion before tool access expires
Give dispatcher-owned workers a tool-capable reporting opportunity before the
hard iteration cap, without accepting arbitrary diffs or weakening failure
counting. Add opt-in per-turn iteration checkpoints for ordinary agents.
Persist checkpoint text with the fresh tool result, never rewrite cached rows.

Salvages the opt-in ratio and per-turn reset implementation from #104683;
credits the earlier default-off signpost proposal in #92438.

Local fixture wire A/B: Kanban ready/1 failure -> done/0; deliberately stuck
workers still reach blocked/2 after two runs. Default-off control unchanged.
Targeted and affected-directory suites queued behind campaign test lock.

Teknium dca7a90cf8 fix(agent): reclaim background processes by execution owner
Track raw task identities across an agent's turns and match them against
process owner_task_id during close. Session IDs and shared terminal keys
are not process ownership, so the old bulk cleanup missed delegated work.
Preserve parent/sibling processes and consume teardown notifications.

Move task-resource cleanup into the lifecycle mixin, add real-process
isolation regressions, and document background process lifetime.

Teknium be58c276ee feat(compression): per-image token cost learned from the provider's own usage (#70328, supersedes #70463)
A flat per-image constant (1500 in the trigger estimator, 1600 in the tail-budget walk) is wrong in
both directions: a screenshot costs ~1,100 tokens on one provider and 4,000+ on a local mmproj
model. In a GUI loop on a 64K window the estimate sat at ~20K while the real prompt passed 80K,
so compaction never fired and the provider rejected every request (#70328).

The provider prices every image exactly on the request that carries it, so the cost is
observable from usage alone, with no vendor formula: with a fresh usage anchor, the residual
between the next real prompt_tokens and anchor + text-only delta is the price of the N images
that delta introduced.

- agent/image_token_cost.py: calibrate_from_usage() runs in record_response_usage before the new
anchor is captured; the learned value (EMA, plausibility-banded) is kept per model@host in
~/.hermes/cache/image_token_costs.json and bound per turn through a ContextVar.
- estimate_messages_tokens_rough, _content_length_for_budget (tail walk) and gateway hygiene all
read the same bound value, so trigger and walk agree; the per-message memo now caches text
tokens and image COUNT so a recalibration re-prices cached rows.
- One flat default (1500) remains only until the first vision turn; the duplicate 1600 is gone.

evals/token_accounting/ab_image_cost_calibration.py (real AIAgent, fake provider pricing images
at 4,000, one screenshot per turn, 64K window): main learns nothing (1500) and the tail walk
under-prices its own protected tail by 56.5%; this branch learns 4,374 after one vision turn
and the walk's error is +8.5%.

Teknium 0f4587e336 refactor(compression): every compaction gate asks real usage first; rough estimates only decide whether to wait
Two parallel "real usage" mechanisms fought each other: the usage anchor (real + delta) and the
compressor's rough/real projection (should_defer_preflight_to_real_usage with
last_rough_tokens_when_real_prompt_fit / _pending_request_rough_tokens / note_request_rough_estimate
baselines). The projection stored an anchored, real-scale figure as its "rough" baseline, so a
rewind that invalidated the anchor produced phantom growth and a spurious compaction (#103391).

Now there is one authority:

- Post-tool gate (turn_preflight.compress_after_tool_results): anchored figure first (the raw
last_prompt_tokens ignored the tool results just appended), then real, then rough.
- Gateway hygiene (run_turn._hmwa_hygiene_plan): real session count, else the anchor persisted on
  the session row, else rough.
- Preflight / pre-API gates: an anchored figure is never deferred. A whole-context rough estimate
over threshold waits ONE request for the provider's real count instead of compressing on a guess
(first request, rewind/edit-resend, reloaded history without a persisted anchor).
- The wait is one request, never a disable: a provider that omits usage
(note_usage_less_response, #2153 class), a real reading already over threshold, a rough figure
past the whole window, and provider-proven overflow all compress immediately; the post-compaction
  latch (#36718 / #104192) is unchanged.
- Projection baselines and their bookkeeping deleted (-101 LOC in context_compressor); the fixtures
that scripted whole-history estimates now state the fact they relied on (provider omits usage).

Fixes #103391 (closes #103397 by construction — the baseline it repaired no longer exists).

686f6c61 c0aaa238f6 feat(compression): usage anchor survives DB reloads and process restarts (salvage #99585)
The usage anchor (real usage.prompt_tokens + delta estimate of what was appended since)
identified the priced transcript by id() of the last message, so it was None on EVERY
gateway turn (history is re-read from the DB each turn) and in every fresh process
(--resume, desktop per-turn serve). Those are exactly the surfaces where the bytes/4
estimate then fired local compression against payloads the provider priced far under
threshold (#99421, #104462).

- agent/usage_anchor.py owns the anchor: content fingerprint instead of id(), persisted on
the session row (model_config._usage_anchor) via set_usage_anchor(), restored on the first
resumed turn while the durable transcript still matches, cleared with the row on
  compaction / codex-native rewrite / session reset.
- Callers repointed from model_metadata (the compat table follows).

Design and persistence slot from #99585 by @686f6c61; re-authored against the Sep 2026
layout (the branch predates the model_metadata / agent_init split).

Benjamin Brumbaugh cd71ee0708 fix(compression): defer local preflight after native checkpoint
A native Responses compaction checkpoint is opaque ciphertext; the rough
preflight estimator counts it as text (5.17M chars -> ~1.29M tokens against
a 204K trigger) and fires local compression on a request whose real prompt is
~116K. Arm the existing one-response real-usage latch when a replayable
checkpoint is captured (build_assistant_message) or restored into a fresh
agent (_hydrate_from_history), honor it in the post-tool gate and idle
compaction, and require non-empty encrypted_content for a checkpoint.

Squash of the author's source commits from #100642 (0e3c234ea0, 771e1b3365,
bb1505a119) plus the fdf140c81d test refresh, re-based onto current main by
patch application. Source delta is byte-identical to the PR head d6ce3e236d.

Teknium d63e380324 compat(plugins): warn once per name when a plugin resolves an old import path; lint step restored in CI
Every PLUGIN-COMPAT __getattr__ now calls hermes_cli.plugin_compat.warn_once(facade, name, target) before
resolving, emitting a HermesPluginCompatWarning (FutureWarning) once per process per name: old path, new
path, removal target. Importing a facade for its live API stays silent; only resolving a moved name warns.
COMPAT_MANIFEST.md documents the warning and how to silence it during migration.

Verified the runtime never routes through a pointer: every entry point (run_agent, cli, hermes_cli.main,
gateway.run, tui_gateway.server, web_server, model_tools + tool discovery, hermes_state, cron.scheduler,
browser_tool, mcp_tool, kanban, auth) imports clean and `hermes doctor` runs end to end with the warning
promoted to an error.

Also restores the check_compat_pointers CI step to .github/workflows/lint.yml, which a0be177aac dropped
when the compat layer was regenerated (the lint script itself was present; the workflow step was not).

hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py, tests/test_plugin_compat_warning.py and the two-line insert per facade are
part of the compat layer and go away with it.

Teknium 2776813df3 compat(plugins): temporary import-path shims for external plugins — ONE commit, revert on schedule
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:

    git revert <this sha>

removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.

What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
  relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)

Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.

joaomarcos a89f6aba44 fix(compaction): stop idle compaction re-summarising a transcript that has not grown
Idle compaction (`compression.idle_compact_after_seconds`) skipped work only
when the context was at or below `threshold_tokens × summary_target_ratio`.
That is a *theoretical* post-compaction target: a real pass lands well above
it because the system prompt, the tool schemas and the protected head/tail
are an incompressible floor.

So a session that compacted to well above the target stayed above it forever,
and every later idle resume re-ran a full summarisation over a transcript that
had not grown. In the reported session the 17:01 pass reduced 64,105 -> 44,579
tokens; the 17:36 resume re-fired because 44,579 was still above the 25,502
theoretical floor, blocking the prompt for another 256 s on a ~55 tok/s local
route and reclaiming nothing. Neither pass was followed by a single API call.

`_should_idle_compact` now also honours `last_compression_rough_tokens` — what
the previous pass on this session actually produced, recorded by
`compress_context` with the same `estimate_request_tokens_rough` shape the idle
estimate uses. When it is known, the transcript must accumulate at least one
`floor_tokens` worth of new content on top of it before another pass is worth
its wall clock. A raised floor is a deferral, not an off switch.

`0` — nothing compacted yet, or the counter cleared by a rebind/recalibration
— keeps the original semantics exactly, so the first idle compaction of any
session is unaffected. The call site type-pins the read so compressor doubles
that expose a Mock there fall back to the original floor.

Fixes a root cause behind #97239. Deliberately does not touch the TUI status
surface (#97253), the digest chain / total ceiling (#93241), or turn-settle
scheduling (#96891).

joaomarcos 65b0f00002 fix(agent): stop the between-turns tool refresh from forking the cached prefix
The per-turn MCP refresh re-derives `agent.tools` from live availability and
publishes the result wholesale. Two kinds of bytes move as a result:

* a tool whose `check_fn` merely flapped (headless browser probe, expired
credential, docker blip) disappears from the array, and
* a late-landing MCP tool splices into sorted position, which can be index 0.

Providers that render `tools` ahead of the messages re-prefill the entire
history behind any moved byte, so either case costs a full re-prefill of the
session — the measured 2% cache hit in #100336. The caller's own comment
claimed the refresh "only ever extends a fresh request prefix"; it did not.

`refresh_agent_mcp_tools(..., preserve_prefix=True)` makes that claim true.
The live order becomes authoritative: existing tools keep their slot (fresh
schemas still land), a tool that is still registered but momentarily
unavailable is carried forward, a tool that genuinely left the registry is
still dropped, and new tools are appended at the tail. Explicit `/reload-mcp`
and the compaction boundary keep the plain rebuild.

emozilla 43e67d872f feat: local models — managed llama.cpp runtime with one-click desktop setup
Run models locally as a first-class provider. The CLI grows a managed
llama.cpp runtime (engine install, model download, server supervision);
the desktop app grows the full setup and management story on top of it.
GUI surfaces ship behind the desktop --local launch flag (hermes desktop
--local, or the flag on the packaged app); backend routes and the CLI
are always live.

Runtime (hermes_cli/local_runtime/):
- curated GGUF catalog with per-machine variant selection: hardware
probe (VRAM/RAM/UMA), fit planning with spill accounting, quant choice
  by context window
- derived recommendation: quality-ranked picks gated by a predicted
decode-speed floor, bandwidth-aware on unified memory; the decision
table is pinned as a test (pick AND reason per memory class), and the
Recommended badge explains its pick in a tooltip fed by the resolver's
  actual branch
- engine install + model download with resumable split parts, cumulative
plan-level progress, and staged-model integrity (a split GGUF counts
only when every part is present)
- server supervision: spawn/adopt/stop, router mode with per-model load
progress relayed over SSE, abandoned-request cleanup

Desktop:
- Settings -> Providers -> Local models: one-click quickstart (install
engine, download the recommended model, boot) plus per-model download/
activate/eject, fit-ranked catalog with context pills
- model pickers (composer dropdown + Cmd+K) show staged local models,
in-flight downloads as live progress rows, and load-into-memory bars
- local-setup campaign tip for eligible hardware; System resources
statusbar widget (GPU/VRAM/RAM); in-chat load progress during sends
- friendly dead-server errors, and failed agent builds retry on the next
send instead of wedging the session

kshitijk4poor 29d4c0ebfd refactor(compression): extract preflight seed predicate onto ContextCompressor
Address review follow-ups on the seed fix:

- Move the 'seed only from the 0 state' guard from an inline block in
  build_turn_context() into
  ContextCompressor.maybe_seed_preflight_display_tokens(), co-locating
the predicate with the rest of the speculative-seed lifecycle
  (snapshot_preflight_display_tokens /
  rollback_interrupted_preflight_display_tokens). Callers now use the
method via a getattr guard so test doubles and external context
  engines without it are unaffected.
- Rewrite the TestPreflightSentinelGuard docstring, which still
described the old >=0 guard ('treats any negative value as no real
usage yet'); the ==0 policy protects ALL non-zero readings.
- Drop the _seed mirror-helper: the tests now call the real production
method on the compressor fixture, eliminating mirror-drift risk (the
helper comment had already drifted once).
- Note the accepted trade-off (partial-usage providers pin the meter
low until their next report) in the method docstring.

Turgut Kural 80b836fa9e fix(compression): preflight display-seed must not overwrite real provider usage
The preflight rough-estimate seed used 'last >= 0' semantics, so any
provider that reports real prompt_tokens got its reading replaced by
the schema/reasoning-inflated rough estimate whenever the estimate was
larger. last_prompt_tokens feeds both the CLI context meter (cli.py)
and the post-response compression gate (conversation_loop.py), so one
seed made the bar jump to an inflated number AND could push the
real-usage gate over threshold on estimator noise.

Observed in a production CLI session on a 1M-token window with a
reasoning-heavy history: the status bar showed ~492K real provider
prompt tokens; the next turn's preflight estimated ~685K (rough
estimates can inflate 1.4-2.5x on reasoning-heavy sessions, #81481)
and seeded it into last_prompt_tokens; compression then fired at ~69%
of the window while real usage was ~49%.

Policy change: a real provider reading (>0) always wins. The seed now
only fills the 0 state ('no reading yet'), keeping the status bar live
for usage-less providers (#34282's motivation); -1 remains protected
as the post-compression sentinel (#36718).

Updates TestPreflightSentinelGuard to encode the new policy and adds a
regression test with the measured 492K/685K numbers.

fangliquanflq 53c0df6de9 fix(agent): stop compression retries after host timeout (#98722)
Salvaged from #98741, composed on top of the merged #98424 preflight
fail-closed boundary. A host-ceiling compression timeout is now a typed,
thread-safe outcome consumed by every automatic caller:

- conversation_compression.py: threading.local + per-agent lock timeout
state (mark/reset/read helpers) upgrading #98424's simple attribute
  where overlapping automatic/manual compression entrypoints matter;
the _last_compression_timed_out attribute stays as compat mirror.
- conversation_loop.py: the mid-turn pre-API pass and the provider
overflow (413/400 context_length_exceeded) recovery path end the turn
with the typed compression_exhausted recovery contract instead of
re-sending the unchanged oversized request and re-entering compression
  in the same turn.
- run_agent.py/turn_context.py: forwarder resets the typed state per
attempt; the #98424 turn-start check reads it through the typed helper.

Tests: thread-safety/atomicity of the state helpers, overflow-recovery
non-re-entry, and typed terminal result.

Teknium 452f6b7de2 fix(compression): route-aware stale-thinking charge parity between compaction trigger and tail walks (#84371)
The preflight trigger charged reasoning/reasoning_content on every assistant message while the tail-budget walks charged newest-turn-only (#73624), so reasoning-heavy codex_responses sessions fired compaction forever while the walk protected everything (middle_window_tokens=0, no_progress every turn, each attempt a full aux summarization).

Wire truth: the codex_responses input builder never ships the text thinking keys (encrypted codex_reasoning_items carry the chain and were already charged unconditionally by both sides), so the trigger overcounted reality; echo-back chat-completions families (DeepSeek/Kimi/MiMo thinking mode) replay stored reasoning_content on every turn, so there the walk undercounted. New single wire-truth predicate message_sanitization.stale_thinking_reaches_wire() now drives BOTH sides: trigger estimates exclude stale thinking on non-echo routes; tail/prune walks charge it on echo routes.

Also: reasoning/reasoning_content double-count fixed in both estimators (wire ships at most one; +53% overcount vs provider prompt_tokens per issue comment), and the commit-layer no_progress path now arms the structural no-op backoff so an unchanged-transcript compaction cannot re-fire every turn (defense in depth; overlaps the #96775 re-entry class).

Teknium c49e2a496e fix(compression): route-aware pruned estimate at remaining pressure sibling sites
Follow-up to the mid-turn pre-API guard fix (#96995 / #97602): sweep the
remaining call sites that derive automatic compression pressure from a
generic estimate over the assembled durable history, which on a compacted
native-Codex session overstates the wire payload by orders of magnitude.

- agent/turn_context.py idle-triggered compaction: use
_preflight_request_tokens (anchor -> native pruned -> generic) instead
of the raw generic request estimate, so resuming a compacted codex
session after an idle gap does not fire a compaction the next request
  never needed.
- agent/turn_context.py uncompressed-session overflow-warn RE-ARM: match
the warn site's route-aware figure so the dedup re-arms correctly on
  native sessions.
- agent/conversation_loop.py post-response should_compress fallback
(last_prompt_tokens==0, i.e. no provider usage after a disconnect or
gateway restart — the unanchored case in #97602's repro): route through
_midturn_request_pressure_tokens instead of the generic figure.

Left alone deliberately: provider-proven overflow recovery paths (413 /
context-length errors — the provider already proved the request does not
fit, figures there only arm recovery and score progress), compression
progress before/after pairs (relative deltas on the same scale), manual
/compress display estimates (gateway/CLI/ACP feedback, not automatic
triggers), MoA advisor budget trimming (not a codex-native wire payload),
and context_compressor internals (measure local durable-history shrink).
2026-08-30 05:15:46 -07:00
Teknium d3a1c46510 feat(agent): context size anchors on provider-reported usage — estimation shrinks to the last turn
Every provider response carries usage.prompt_tokens — exact ground truth
for the full request (system prompt + tool schemas + history). Context-size
checks now anchor on the last main-loop response's usage and estimate only
the messages appended since, instead of re-estimating the whole history
with chars/4 heuristics and flat 1500-token image costs. The estimate error
window shrinks from the entire conversation to one turn and self-corrects
at every response.

- agent/model_metadata.py: capture_usage_anchor() / anchored_context_tokens()
with a structural base-message identity check that fails closed on any
  transcript rewrite.
- agent/conversation_loop.py: anchor captured at the single main-loop usage
  site (MoA uses pre-fold aggregator usage; advisor/aux calls never anchor);
pre-API pressure check prefers the anchor.
- agent/turn_context.py: preflight compression estimate prefers the anchor.
- agent/context_breakdown.py: /context display prefers the anchor.
- Invalidation: compaction rewrite (conversation_compression), codex native
  compaction (codex_runtime), session reset/switch (run_agent), plus the
  fail-closed structural check for splices/micro-compaction.
- Usage-less responses keep the previous anchor; no anchor -> pure
estimation fallback (first request of a session).

686f6c61 e6b4f3750b fix(agent): count native Responses preflight against pruned wire
Automatic preflight used the full durable transcript even when the
Codex Responses request would prune around a native compaction
checkpoint. That false-triggered a 600s local summary against history
the main request never sent. Estimate the converted, checkpoint-pruned
payload when native compaction is eligible, and keep the generic
estimate as the conservative fallback.

Finn763 74e6885f0d fix(review): fail-closed compressor detachment + warm-cache first request (#93057 review)
Adversarial-review fixes for the #93057 snapshot-compaction PR:

- Fail-closed detachment: only re-enable compression after
bind_session_state successfully severs the engine's parent binding.
A failed rebind keeps the historical compression_enabled=False
behavior and warns, instead of running compaction against a
compressor still bound to the parent's SessionDB (#38727 re-open).
- Warm-cache parity: defer both compression gates (turn-prologue
preflight + pre-API pressure check) until the fork's first provider
response, so the first request replays the full snapshot as the
intended cached read and compaction applies from the second request
on — matching the documented budget mental model.
- Tests: regression for the rebind-failure fail-closed path (red on
pre-fix code) and the existing threshold-crossing test reworked to a
two-request review asserting the warm first request + compacted
second request. 116 tests green across all touched suites; ruff
  clean.

Teknium e26d91dc11 feat(bot-mode): message_agent tool — structured, Bot-Chat-only agent-to-agent DMs
Bot Mode agents now DM teammates through a real tool instead of
hand-assembled shell commands. message_agent(target, message) validates
the target against the live roster, applies the sender's attribution
prefix server-side, and delivers over the existing proven transports
(hermes -p ... --query-file for local teammates, hermes peer dm for
peer gateways) as a tracked background process with notify-on-complete
— fire-and-forget, the reply wakes the sender on a later turn.

Containment: the schema is injected per-turn ONLY into a bot's
canonical 'Bot Chat' session on Bot-Mode-managed installs (same gate as
the protocol section); it is never registered in the tool registry or
any toolset, and dispatch re-gates on the session title so a forged
call from any other session refuses. The gate is session-stable, so the
tool list stays byte-identical across turns (prompt-cache safe).

The protocol section is rewritten to teach the tool and now carries the
teammate roster WITH ROLES (Bot Mode title + profile description), so
bots know who does what before picking a recipient. Roles and a
protocol version salt join the capability fingerprint: existing eternal
Bot Chats adopt the v2 protocol + tool with one epoch refresh, and a
rename/description edit refreshes the roster on the next message.

kshitijk4poor cef999c5cf refactor(agent): consolidate uncompressed-overflow guard to one warn site + re-arm
Review follow-up on the salvaged #89444:
- Warn fires only from the conversation-loop pre-API site, reusing the
unconditionally computed request_pressure_tokens (zero marginal cost,
covers turn-start AND mid-turn growth) — drops the duplicate every-turn
  estimate the turn-context block paid.
- Turn-context block now only RE-ARMS the dedup once the session is back
under the window, so warn -> /compress -> regrow warns again (the dedup
was previously never cleared with compression disabled).
- Char pre-check treats non-string (multimodal) content as over-gate —
len() of a part list defeated the 20k char floor (probe: 10 'chars' vs
~70k real tokens) — and compares against the window, not a flat 20k.
- Deletes the unreachable get_model_context_length fallback from both
sites (context_compressor always exists; its context_length property
hard-floors positive; the fallback would have been a synchronous
network probe mid-turn that also bypassed config overrides) and the
undeduped inline _emit_warning fallback (third copy of the message).
- Tests bind the PRODUCTION warn/clear methods (previously a verbatim
fake reimplementation left them uncovered) and add dedup, re-arm,
  no-rearm-while-over, and multimodal-gate coverage.

joaomarcos db5d5dffea fix(agent): guard against uncompressed session overflow when compression is disabled (#89297)
When compression is explicitly disabled (compression.enabled: false), conversations can grow past the model's context window across hundreds of messages (e.g., 824 messages / 460K+ tokens in #89297). Serializing massive JSON payloads repeatedly under memory-constrained environments leads to swap thrashing (STAT=U) and unhandled provider errors.

Add a pre-flight uncompressed context overflow guardrail in build_turn_context and a deduped _warn_uncompressed_context_overflow method on AIAgent to alert users to run /compact or enable compression before unmanageable payloads freeze the process.

Tuck d61558793e fix: stamp user message timestamps in turn_context 2026-08-15 01:04:19 -07:00
kshitij e3fab0437e refactor(cache): never-raising scope resolver shared by both call sites
/simplify-code finding: turn_context evaluated resolve_prompt_cache_scope()
inside set_runtime_main's argument list under the umbrella try/except — a
resolution failure would silently skip the ENTIRE runtime binding
(provider/model/base_url/api_key/session_id for all aux calls that turn),
not just the cache scope.

- prompt_cache_scope: add resolve_prompt_cache_scope_safe() (never raises,
  returns None on failure/empty).
- turn_context: resolve the scope into a local via the safe variant BEFORE
the set_runtime_main call, so a failure can only lose the scope.
- chat_completion_helpers: _prompt_cache_scope_for_agent delegates to the
shared safe variant (guarded import retained).
- tests: +1 (hostile-property agent -> None; normal/empty passthrough).

kshitij 96cdf19a0b refactor(cache): fold self-review findings on the rotation-scope fix
- prompt_cache_scope: memo key now includes DB presence (a lazily attached
  _session_db re-resolves instead of staying pinned to the physical id);
_persist_disabled agents (background-review forks that never get a DB row)
  memoize the fallback instead of re-querying the lineage per API call;
module docstring cross-references get_conversation_root and why the two
lineage resolvers must not be deduplicated.
- chat_completion_helpers: hoist the triplicated
_prompt_cache_scope_for_agent(agent) call to a single local above the
OpenAI-wire dispatch (after the anthropic/bedrock early returns, which
  don't use prompt_cache_key).
- codex transport docstring: x-client-request-id mirrors the derived body
key, not the raw scope id.
- turn_context comment: acknowledge the first-turn pre-persist fallback.
- tests: +2 (persist-disabled memoization; lazy DB attach re-resolution).

kshitij cee2446222 fix(cache): keep prompt_cache_key warm across compression session rotation
Legacy compaction mode (compression.in_place: false) rotates the physical
session_id mid-conversation. The prompt-cache scope introduced in #79161 was
derived from that physical id, so every rotation moved the same conversation
into a fresh cache bucket - the prompt cache went cold at every rotation
boundary (#79017).

Fix: resolve a rotation-stable logical scope - the compression-lineage ROOT
of the current session (SessionDB.get_compression_lineage, fork-aware
post-#79193) - once per turn, memoized per transcript segment, and prefer it
over the physical session_id at every prompt_cache_key derivation site:

- agent/prompt_cache_scope.py (new): resolve_prompt_cache_scope(agent) -
lineage-root walk with per-segment memo; falls back to the physical id
when no DB is attached or the walk fails, degrading to pre-fix behavior.
- transports/codex.py: build_kwargs accepts cache_scope_id and prefers it
for the body prompt_cache_key, the xAI x-grok-conv-id header, and the
Codex x-client-request-id routing header. The Codex session_id header
keeps the raw physical id (transcript identity, #57012 contract).
- transports/chat_completions.py: _add_prompt_cache_key accepts
  cache_scope_id with the same precedence.
- chat_completion_helpers.py: build_api_kwargs threads the resolved scope
into all three build_kwargs call sites (codex, profile, legacy).
- auxiliary_client.py: set_runtime_main carries cache_scope; the aux
Responses cache-key site prefers it over the physical session_id.
- turn_context.py: resolves the scope once per turn and threads it through
set_runtime_main (no DB walk on the per-API-call hot path).

Scope semantics preserved from #79161: /new starts a fresh scope (new
lineage), /branch children, delegate subagents, and tool children stay
isolated (explicit-fork exclusion in get_compression_lineage), unrelated
sessions keep distinct buckets, and cron per-fire timestamps still
normalize via _cache_scope_from_session_id.

Default installs compact in place (session_id never rotates), so they hit
the memo and produce byte-identical keys to before.

Fixes #79017
