A name with no bundled brand glyph had nothing to render, and the renderer could not go find one — CORS makes another origin's markup unreadable. So resolution moves to the main process: read the page, collect every icon it declares in its head and web manifest, rank them, sniff the bytes to catch a challenge page served as image/png, and cache the answer per host on disk. Only ever the site's own marks — a public icon service would answer for the hosts behind a bot wall, but asking one means telling a third party which tools someone is wiring up, so an unreadable site keeps its monogram instead.
