The composer showed "<model> · Med" in one truncating pill and the only way
to change the effort was to open the model menu, find the active model's
row, and hover it for the per-row options submenu. Users read the pill as
"this model is medium only" and never found the submenu.
- New `ReasoningPill` next to the model pill: shows the active model's live
effort (session value, else the profile default) and opens the same
Thinking / Fast / Effort rows the catalog submenu offers, for the active
model only. Hidden when the catalog reports `reasoning: false`; stays
while capabilities are unknown so it never flickers during the fetch.
Folds away with the model pill in the compact composer stages.
- `useModelMenuController` (shell sibling) now owns the session write /
preset / optimistic-store / rollback logic that lived inside
`ModelMenuPanel`; the model menu and the new `ReasoningMenuPanel` share it
so an edit from either surface is one code path. Tiles get their own
pill bound to their SessionView, primary or tile — never the globals.
- `ModelOptionsContent` (the submenu body) is exported container-free so
the pill's top-level menu renders it without a Radix Sub wrapper.
- The model pill drops the effort suffix (`formatModelPillLabel`: name +
Fast); `formatModelStatusLabel` had no other caller and is removed.
- `currentModelCapabilities()` in lib/model-options resolves the active
pick's caps through `catalogProviderMatches` (aliases, custom slugs).
Live (headless Electron + worktree `hermes serve`, CDP): before — one
pill "Deepseek V4 Flash · Low", no effort control; after — "Deepseek V4
Flash" + "Low" pill; pick High → `config.get reasoning` on the live
session returns high; a `reasoning:false` cap unmounts the pill; the
catalog row submenu still writes through and the pill mirrors it.
Credit: the dedicated-pill direction was proposed independently in
composer selector on current main with the shared-controller shape.
Capabilities → Plugins is now a single table: one row per PACKAGE, with a
Desktop column (this app) and an Agent column (the selected profile). A
package with both halves is one row, never two; the kind badge is inferred
from what it ships (plugin.yaml → agent, plugin.js → desktop).
The desktop half of a unified agent+desktop package no longer loads from the
profile-shaped `plugins/<name>/desktop/` folder. Electron copies that half
into `~/.hermes/desktop-plugins/<name>/` beside a `.hermes-package.json`
marker (package name, source, origin repo/sha) and keeps it in sync: newer
source → re-copy, package uninstalled → copy removed, hand-installed
standalone folder of the same name → never overwritten. The renderer scans
exactly one root, so a pane can never appear, disappear, or re-scope when the
user switches profiles — the same switch reads the same value everywhere.
Why a copy rather than scanning every profile: two profiles can carry the
same package at different SHAs; a scan has to pick one silently. One copy,
one source of truth, stamped with where it came from.
- plugin-packages.ts: pure merge of desktop records + agent rows → rows
- plugins.manage list reports `has_desktop_half` so the pairing is explicit
- Install dialog (local backend): the desktop half is materialised from the
installed package instead of cloning a second standalone copy; remote
backends keep the separate clone. Target path now names the real profile
folder for non-default profiles.
- "Install here": a desktop half whose agent half is missing in the selected
profile pre-fills the dialog from the marker's origin; disabled with an
explanation for hand-copied folders with no origin.
- Profile selector moves into the Agent column header; hidden with 1 profile
- Rescan/Update reconcile the copies BEFORE rescanning (ordering bug)
- Drop the dead `agentPluginsRoot` IPC; docs updated (desktop.md, SDK,
bot-mode.md, hermes-desktop-plugins reference)
Live-dogfooded on a headless Electron with two profiles and a real
file:// git package: install both halves, profile switch ×3, Install here
into the second profile, v2 update via `hermes plugins update` → chip text
changes on Rescan, uninstall from both profiles → copy and row gone, broken
plugin row, cold restart, sash drag/reset, legacy Settings → Plugins
redirect.
Three things Teknium hit on the merged Plugins page:
1. Desktop plugins vanished on profile switch. `fs-ipc.ts::localPluginsRoot`
resolved `<HERMES_HOME>/profiles/<active>/desktop-plugins` for a named
Desktop profile, so a disk-installed plugin only existed under the profile
it was installed from. Desktop plugins extend the app, not an agent; the
root is now `<HERMES_HOME>/desktop-plugins` regardless of profile, gateway
or remote machine (`electron/desktop-plugins-root.ts`), with a one-time
migration that lifts any per-profile folders into the app root (root copy
wins on collision). Agent-plugin and logs roots stay profile-scoped.
On the page, the profile selector now renders INSIDE the framed Agent
plugins block as its header, and Desktop plugins sit outside that frame,
so the scope boundary is visible without reading the blurb.
2. The catalog viewport could not be resized. It gets the same top-edge drag
sash as the Skills hub picker (persisted height, double-click resets,
clamped so the lists above keep real height; iframe pointer-events off
while dragging).
3. Accent Picker, a theme-authoring toy shipped off by default, is removed
from the bundled set and published as a standalone desktop plugin at
https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-desktop-accent-picker (same source,
esbuild-bundled plugin.js importing only the three loader-resolvable
specifiers). Docs point there.
Symptom (Discord/X report, macOS): exit HUD mode and the small HUD window
stays on screen while the main window never regains focus; the toggle now
reads the wrong state, so there is no in-app way out.
Three defects in the HUD lifecycle, all in the main process:
- closeHudWindow() detached the window's 'closed' listener before calling
win.close(). close() is a REQUEST that waits on the renderer's unload
handlers, so a HUD renderer that never answered left an always-on-top
window with no teardown owner and no close broadcast. The 'closed'
handler now stays attached and is the single teardown path; a bounded
requestHudClose() (electron/hud-close.ts) destroys the window after a
1.5 s grace if the renderer never lets go.
- ⌘W inside the HUD was routed to the MAIN renderer's close-active-tab
(installPreviewShortcut is wired on every chat window), so it closed a
tab in the hidden app window and left the HUD up. ⌘W in the HUD now
runs closeHudWindow(), the same path as the exit button.
- restoreMainWindowFromHud() was a bare show() and only armed when the
main window was isVisible() at HUD-open time. On macOS isVisible() is
false for an occluded window (Electron folds occlusionState in), so
the app never came back when the HUD was opened over another app, and
show() alone does not make the window key. The restore now arms on a
live main window and routes through focusWindow() (restore → show →
focus). Closes#88513 (credit: PR #90489's diagnosis).
Renderer: the handoff now also requests composer focus on the close
broadcast, so the app window gets the keyboard, not just the session.
Docs: ⌘/Ctrl+W added to the HUD exit list.
Only the CLI could install a plugin at an exact commit (`--ref <sha>`); the
Desktop "Install from Git" dialog, the TUI gateway `plugins.manage install`
method and the dashboard `/agent-plugins/install` endpoint all called
`_install_plugin_core` without a ref, so a team that wanted everyone on the
same private-plugin commit had to leave the app for a terminal.
- `dashboard_install_plugin(ref=)` threads the pin to `_install_plugin_core`;
the 40-hex validation and HEAD verification are unchanged. The gateway
method and dashboard body accept `ref`.
- Desktop dialog gains an optional "Pin to commit" field (custom sources only,
client-side 40-hex check disables Install on anything shorter).
- `plugins.manage list` rows carry `pinned_sha`; the Desktop plugins tab shows
a `pinned @ <sha8>` badge and `hermes plugins list` prints `git pinned@<sha8>`
in Source, so a team can eyeball that everyone runs the same commit.
Plugins were split across two pages that each showed half the picture:
Settings → Plugins listed desktop plugins plus "Install from Git" and a
pointer saying agent plugins live elsewhere; Capabilities → Plugins listed
agent plugins plus the catalog picker but knew nothing about desktop
plugins. A user asking "what extends my Hermes and where do I add more?"
had to visit both and still could not see the whole set in one place.
Capabilities → Plugins is now THE plugins page:
- Agent plugins section (scoped to the profile selector) with the
"Install from Git" button in its header — installs target the scoped
profile, not whichever one is active.
- Desktop plugins section beneath it (same for every profile), with the
folder/rescan controls and the "agent half missing here" drift chip,
whose repair also lands in the SCOPED profile.
- The catalog picker underneath, unchanged.
Settings → Plugins is removed. `/settings?tab=plugins[&plugin=…]` and the
existing `?tab=mcp` redirect share one table (`settings/moved-tabs.ts`) so
old bookmarks and palette links land on the same row on the new page.
Command palette: plugins moved from the Settings group to the Capabilities
group; installed-plugin rows deep-link to `/skills?tab=plugins&plugin=…`.
Dead `settings.plugins.agent.*` and `settings.nav.plugins` i18n keys dropped;
docs and in-code pointers say Capabilities → Plugins.
Move the WSL / /dev/dxg / d3d12_dri.so probes into _prefer_wsl_d3d12 with
the probed paths as module constants, so the launcher call site is a single
line and a test can lay out a fake WSLg host without touching real
/dev or /usr/lib. The two tests now run the real _desktop_launch_env end to
end (selected under WSL+dxg+driver; untouched with an explicit Mesa
override, off WSL, without /dev/dxg, or without the driver file) instead of
unit-testing the helper with a precomputed boolean.
Docs: one paragraph in the Desktop guide on the automatic selection and
the env vars that keep an explicit choice authoritative.
Follow-up to Xipong's fix for #106117 (salvaged from #106118).
Fold the helper into _npm_lifecycle_env itself: the whole fix is one
is_file() check plus a setdefault, so a separate function, the
try/except around get_hermes_home() (it never raises) and the
dict-returning indirection were shape-gate violations. Build the path
with os.fspath so it is correct on Windows too.
Tests: keep the two invariants (file present -> NPM_CONFIG_USERCONFIG
points at it; explicit process/caller value wins and a missing file
sets nothing), fold the other two into the negative test.
Docs: one paragraph in the desktop troubleshooting page next to
ELECTRON_MIRROR describing $HERMES_HOME/npmrc.

Remount scope-owned credential state on Applies-to changes and bind onboarding requests to their initiating route. Cancel polling and invalidate late results when setup closes or reopens, without undoing writes already sent.

Retain partial-line output, UTF-8 decoding, failure output and cancellation cleanup. Based on streaming investigations by Artemonim (#101850) and lEWFkRAD (#104843); gateway tee adapted from fangliquanflq (#97402). Live Linux child/tee probe: withheld or dropped on base, visible in 0.02 seconds after. Campaign-locked tests and native Windows proof are pending.
Reuse the focused pane derivation for visible sidebar activity rather than trusting a stale workspace route. Live Electron reproduction: Kanban stayed highlighted while a resumed session tab was visible; the highlight now clears without changing the retained route. Adapted the rendered sidebar invariant and focus derivation from MarcoFernstaedt's PR #88691 for #88517. Directory suite queued under the campaign test lock.
Keep compact completion labels while rendering only result and job output bodies, including legacy and batch deliveries. Credit Gyarados4157's #101083 investigation; avoid rendering its full model instruction envelope.
Remove whole-document whitespace cleanup that erased hard breaks and fenced-code spacing across all five ingestion paths. Limit generated-image gap joining to the removed image itself. Keep soft newlines as soft breaks.
Investigated #97117 and the approaches in #97431 (@wooyongbin3-cpu) and #97175 (@Jackal991); both leave fenced-code whitespace and sibling ingestion paths exposed, so remove the destructive normalization instead.
Salvage #101453 (03a3f466d38134ba416764185884b3d655197a1d). Preserve its opt-out and first-run behavior; replace predicate-mocked tests with one native config/filesystem invariant and clarify XDG docs. Real venv/XDG probe: base clobbers custom entry, fix preserves it; targeted suite 94 passed.
Twenty-three comments arrived as twenty-three flat blocks, so the agent made
twenty-three todos and ground through them one at a time. They now arrive
grouped by where they sit in the page, with a line telling the agent to work
the groups rather than the comments.
The renderer groups on structure, not meaning. Whether a comment is a UI nit
or a functional bug is a judgment only the model can make, and prose-matching
it here would be wrong constantly; which pins share a DOM subtree is something
the selector already answers. That split is also the one that makes parallel
work safe — grouping by theme instead ("all the spacing ones") cuts across the
same components and puts several workers in the same files, so the guidance
says to hand out whole groups and never to regroup by theme.
Grouping compares ancestor paths, so a heading and a paragraph in one card
stay together instead of becoming two singletons. Depth is derived rather than
tuned: descend the shared prefix until it stops being shared, then sub-split
any group still holding more than a third of the batch — without that pass a
normal page buries every section under `main`. Batches under four comments,
and batches that all land in one region, stay flat.
Grouping is advice in the prompt, never an action: the renderer does not spawn
or delegate anything. That stays the agent's call.
Comment mode shipped the crop and the note, so an agent got a picture of the
problem and had to grep for the element it showed. Each element comment now
also names its CSS selector, its markup, and the computed styles that decide
layout, which is what the agent needs to land in the right file.
The target line stays prose — it is what the user pointed at — and the DOM
detail rides labelled lines beneath it. Area pins have no element, so they
still get only the crop and the note.
Markup is redacted in the guest before it crosses to the host: password and
hidden input values, and any attribute reading as a key/token/secret, are
replaced with [redacted] on a clone, so a page's secrets never reach the
composer or the model. It is clipped to a 600-char budget so one comment
cannot paste a whole section.
AnnotateIdentity was a hand-copy of CompactIdentity that had already drifted;
it is now an alias, so the guest, the pin, and the packer cannot disagree
about the shape again.
- use-desktop-integrations: hold the restore latch until the config
record answers; when false, stay on the fresh chat (route and session
restore alike) while still remembering the open chat for next launch.
- wiring: read the shared config-record query; undefined while pending,
fetch failure falls back to the historical behavior (resume).
- appearance-settings: ToggleRow writing through the shared config
cache with rollback + notifyError on a failed save.
- ar/ru strings, docs line in user-guide/desktop.md, two hook tests.
Symptom: picking a model in the Desktop composer for the primary chat
silently rewrote config.yaml (model.default + model.provider) as the
profile default, ignoring model.persist_switch_by_default. A throwaway
pick that resolved to e.g. openai-api (no key) left the profile with an
unusable default on the next launch (#90235).
Root cause: 7d96537bc8 (#86414) made use-model-controls.ts send --global
for every primary-tile pick so a fresh profile would get a persisted
provider instead of falling through to a leftover OPENAI_API_KEY env var.
That put a persistence policy in the client, contradicting the
server-side rule /model uses (resolve_persist_behavior).
Fix:
- resolve_persist_behavior gains one rule, ahead of the --provider
session-only rule: when neither model.default nor model.provider is
configured yet, persist. This preserves #86414's first-pick motivation
for CLI, gateway and Desktop alike. With a default configured, a plain
pick is session-only unless --global / persist_switch_by_default.
- Desktop primary-tile picks send no scope flag and let the gateway decide.
Secondary tiles and MoA presets still send --session.
- /model help text in cli.py said "(persists)"; it now matches reality and
lists --global.
- Docs: desktop.md picker note + slash-commands /model row.
Tests: test_first_pick_persists_then_session_only (fails on main), and the
existing use-model-controls vitest updated to assert the flag-less request.
Two new right-click-toggleable status bar items, mirroring the CLI/TUI
Pantheon status bar upgrades: prompt-cache hit rate ("87%") and rolling
output throughput ("42 t/s"). Both are hidden by default and enabled from
the bar's existing 'Show in status bar' context menu, like the context meter.
Renderer-only: the tui_gateway already emits cache_hit_pct and avg_tps in
every session.usage tick and message.complete payload, so the items ride
the same UsageStats the context meter reads — no new RPC, no polling.
Labels show a placeholder until the backend has data, never self-hide.
Run models locally as a first-class provider. The CLI grows a managed
llama.cpp runtime (engine install, model download, server supervision);
the desktop app grows the full setup and management story on top of it.
GUI surfaces ship behind the desktop --local launch flag (hermes desktop
--local, or the flag on the packaged app); backend routes and the CLI
are always live.
Runtime (hermes_cli/local_runtime/):
- curated GGUF catalog with per-machine variant selection: hardware
probe (VRAM/RAM/UMA), fit planning with spill accounting, quant choice
by context window
- derived recommendation: quality-ranked picks gated by a predicted
decode-speed floor, bandwidth-aware on unified memory; the decision
table is pinned as a test (pick AND reason per memory class), and the
Recommended badge explains its pick in a tooltip fed by the resolver's
actual branch
- engine install + model download with resumable split parts, cumulative
plan-level progress, and staged-model integrity (a split GGUF counts
only when every part is present)
- server supervision: spawn/adopt/stop, router mode with per-model load
progress relayed over SSE, abandoned-request cleanup
Desktop:
- Settings -> Providers -> Local models: one-click quickstart (install
engine, download the recommended model, boot) plus per-model download/
activate/eject, fit-ranked catalog with context pills
- model pickers (composer dropdown + Cmd+K) show staged local models,
in-flight downloads as live progress rows, and load-into-memory bars
- local-setup campaign tip for eligible hardware; System resources
statusbar widget (GPU/VRAM/RAM); in-chat load progress during sends
- friendly dead-server errors, and failed agent builds retry on the next
send instead of wedging the session
Co-developed with NVIDIA field feedback on RTX 5090 and DGX Spark.
- Translate leftover English 'toolset(s)' strings in ru.ts
- Cover ru aliases/config value in languages.test.ts (parity with ar)
- List Russian among desktop UI languages in website/docs/user-guide/desktop.md
The Skills tab now lists the entire official optional-skills catalog
(optional-skills/ shipped with the repo) below the installed skills.
Each catalog row has an Install button that routes through the standard
hub action pipeline; once the install finishes the row flips into the
installed list with the normal enabled/disabled toggle.
- backend: GET /api/skills/hub/official — OptionalSkillSource.list_local()
scan (no network) + per-profile installed flags from the hub lock
- desktop: catalog section in SkillsView with search/scope integration,
install-state spinners off $hubActions, and an OfficialSkillDetail pane
(hub preview: frontmatter + full SKILL.md + Install)
- CapRow gains an optional action slot (button instead of the Switch)
- electron: route the new endpoint with the skills family (primary backend)
- i18n: officialCatalog/officialPill keys across en/ja/zh/zh-hant
The last piece of the macOS permissions campaign (#52010 follow-up): macOS
prompts per-folder (Desktop, then Downloads, then Documents, ...) as the
agent touches each one — a drip-feed of dialogs on first use. ONE Full Disk
Access grant covers all of them permanently, and with the stable signing
identities merged this week it survives every update. Nothing in Hermes
taught users that.
- hermes doctor: check_macos_full_disk_access() — prompt-free probe (the
FDA-gated TCC db dir returns EPERM without a dialog; TCC only prompts on
protected-CATEGORY paths), reports granted state or prints the one-switch
setup with the Privacy_AllFiles deep link.
- hermes setup: same probe at the end of onboarding — the moment users are
primed to do system setup — silent when already granted, indeterminate,
or non-macOS.
- docs: desktop.md TCC section now leads with the one-switch guidance.
- 7 tests (granted / denied / indeterminate / non-macOS, both surfaces).
TCC keys permission grants to the app's code-signing requirement. Grants
made to pre-#73681 builds carry a cdhash-pinned requirement that no
longer matches the rebuilt bundle, so macOS re-prompts on every capture
even though the System Settings toggle shows ON — and the modern prompt
has no Allow button, so users cannot complete the one-time re-grant.
- hermes doctor: new check_macos_tcc_grants() reports the desktop
bundle's DR class (cdhash-pinned → grants reset on every update;
identifier-pinned → stable) and prints the exact stale-grant repair
(tccutil reset, toggle ON, fully quit & relaunch).
- hermes update: after a successful update on macOS with a desktop app
installed, print the one-line stale-grant guidance.
- docs: desktop.md no longer claims grants persist 'out of the box';
documents the one-time re-grant for pre-fix grants.
Closes#86385
Fixes the two live E2E blockers @ctaylor86 found on PR #77189 (macOS 26.3.1,
OpenSSL 3.6.3):
- retry the PKCS#12 export with -legacy when security import rejects the
OpenSSL 3 default format ('MAC verification failed during PKCS12 import')
- trust the self-signed root for the codeSign policy (security
add-trusted-cert -r trustRoot -p codeSign) — an imported-but-untrusted cert
is invisible to find-identity -v and unusable by codesign
- gate success on find-identity -v -p codesigning (postcondition), and use
the same -v probe for idempotency so an untrusted leftover cert is repaired
instead of reported as done
Tests rewritten as stateful fakes (valid only after import+trust), plus new
coverage for the -legacy retry, trust failure, postcondition gate, and the
untrusted-cert repair path; sabotage-verified (reverting to the name-in-output
probe fails 4 tests). Docs: manual fallback now includes the Trust step.
Adds a one-shot `hermes desktop --setup-tcc-identity` command that creates a
self-signed code-signing certificate in the login keychain (openssl +
security import), grants codesign access to it, writes
desktop.macos_signing_identity to config.yaml, and re-signs the packaged app
with a certificate-anchored Designated Requirement.
macOS persists permission grants (Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Files and
Folders, microphone) against the app's code-signing identity, not its path.
The default identifier-pinned ad-hoc signature is stable across rebuilds, but
a certificate-anchored identity is the strongest guarantee — the same
mechanism yabai/skhd rely on. Previously users had to create the certificate
manually in Keychain Access; this command automates the whole flow and is
idempotent (re-run after updates).
Docs: desktop.md TCC section now leads with the command, keeps manual steps.
Tests: 4 new — fresh cert creation path, idempotent reuse, non-macOS no-op,
cmd_gui early-exit before build.
GSC page-level data shows configuration (171K impr, pos 5.3), quickstart
(135K, 5.3), providers (123K, 5.3), web-dashboard (68K, 6.5), docker

headroom because their title/H1 are bare nouns instead of the terms
people search.
- Frontmatter title + H1 now carry the query terms on all six pages
- Desktop docs page links back to the new marketing /desktop product
page, joining the two official properties Google sees for the query

Omarchy tiles the HUD like any other toplevel, so always-on-top and

Addresses @helix4u's review on #91493:
- conversation_loop now stamps failure_retryable (the real ClassifiedError
verdict) next to failure_reason; error_surface prefers it and only falls
back to the reason set for older results. Fallback set corrected to match
classify_api_error (auth, format_error, billing_unverified now
non-retryable).
- The descriptor carries the failing session's provider/model captured at
classification time; Copy error details prefers them over the foreground
composer atoms.
- Open logs is labeled 'Open Desktop logs' on remote/cloud connections —
the local folder holds transport logs, not the remote runtime's.
- API-exception module allowlist widened to botocore/boto3/google/grpc/
requests/aiohttp so other adapter SDKs don't misclassify as gateway.
Sessions running on provider 'nous' get a 'Nous support' action on the
failed-turn card, opening the portal help hub
(https://portal.nousresearch.com/help — docs, Discord, GitHub) in the
external browser. All five locales + docs updated.
Turn errors now carry a structured {layer, code, retryable} descriptor
(agent/error_surface.py) built from the same classifier the retry loop
uses. The tui_gateway stamps it on terminal error frames, retained
failed-turn snapshots, and resume replay; the Desktop error card renders
the layer title (provider / endpoint / streaming / auth / billing /
gateway / runtime / disk) plus matched actions: Retry, Switch provider,
Open logs, Copy diagnostics.
Older backends that omit the descriptor keep today's behavior (generic
title, string-sniff fallbacks) — the field is advisory on both sides.
Remote-mode installs had every update affordance (About panel Update now,
⌘K Update Hermes, the update-ready toast) pointed at the BACKEND only, so
users updated their VPS forever while the desktop app itself sat weeks
stale — with no signal it was behind (the skew warning only fired the
other way). Reported by Santiago Sarceda: mac app on v0.20.0 kept
repro'ing UI bugs fixed on main because 'update' never touched the app.
- store/updates.ts: applyEverythingUpdate() orchestrates all targets —
active backend first (detailed progress), every other eligible
registered gateway via the existing Electron fan-out (cloud rows skip),
the client LAST (its apply relaunches the app). startActiveUpdate/
requestActiveUpdate route through it whenever more than one update
target exists; single-machine installs keep the one-button flow.
- After ANY successful backend update, the client version is re-checked
and a one-click 'Update desktop app' warning fires if the GUI is still
behind — the reverse-skew signal that didn't exist.
- electron: hermes:connections:update-all accepts optional excludeIds so
the flow doesn't double-dispatch the active backend / local runtime.
- i18n: 7 new updates.* keys across en/zh/zh-hant/ja/ar.
- docs: desktop.md Updating section + multi-connection guide.
- tests: 10 new cases (gating, ordering, exclusions, failure isolation,
memoization, nudge on/off).
